Paul's Boutique is one of the most overlooked and underrated hip hop albums of all time. Unfortunately the B-Boys were stereotyped in the 80's as a frat boy specialty act. It wasn't until Check Your Head that ppl realized these were some talented dudes.

Great storytellers, beats, and just good old-fashioned hip-hop fun. Huge fan since '85. Creativity on the loose and they played their instruments when it called for it. This is a great example of many stories they told. Here's my own cut- "Some tracks are for the party, some tracks are are for the stoned... some tracks are when you're vibin' out all alone" 😂 great vid❤

I mean 1989... they literally changed the laws on copyright law for sampling due to the sampling on this album. And what did the Beastie Boys do in response, started playing all their own instruments in their tracks and sampling their own stuff later on... and it was still FIRE! :)

You have to remember the historical context. NWA dropped Straight Outta Compton 6 months or so before and were on top of rap music. Gangsta rap was the flavor of the month and what everyone was paying attention to at the time. As good as PB was, it was overshadowed by NWAs galactic success. Remember, NWA literally changed the face of hip hop, what was selling, and what everyone wanted to hear. Afrocentric groups like Public Enemy, X Clan, and De La Soul all suddenly fell off as all everyone wanted to hear was drive bys and gang and drug selling stories. They were the next big thing, like the Beasties themselves in 87. Bad timing for PB.

The beat is from the Eagles song Those Shoes. It’s also a great song, but no one can react to the Eagles. This is my favorite Beasties track, right now.
