We have to look if things are over-engineered. If graphQL is solving the problem of over fetching then it could be solved easily by fetching only required fields from the database instead of whole table rows. So instead of learning new language, we also have to be pragmatic programmer and could redesign our approach for simplicity. We could write our APIs to return DTOs instead of returning whole VOs. This approach was followed in earlier days of programming when networking was the issue and only desired fields were fetched to save network traffic and bandwidth. But I really appreciate the way how speaker is trying to explain the concepts.
