Just a note: cats doing the covering up motion on food doesn't always mean they think it's poop. They also do that with food they like if they are full and want it "saved for later". In the wild they cover up their kills to keep them from being stolen if they aren't hungry enough to eat it there.
I had to find this out early on lol. My cat was trying to cover up a piece of cheese on a flat, wooden floor 🤦🏾♀️

We had a cat that was one year old and did that. Her only sibling died a couple days after birth and after a year her mother had kittens again. This cat then began to relive her childhood with her new baby siblings. 😆
The issue was she played too aggressively and she didn't understand the size difference of her being a fully grown cat and her siblings being tiny, vulnerable kittens. 🤦🏻😂

It's also very possible that the cat is in some sort of pain or experiences anxiety even though they're also affectionate! AFAIK cat's can't really control when they hiss but/if it's triggered by pain, fear, or anger.

That bird was boldly unbothered by that cat existing at all, and the cat was annoyed by the bird being close to its food while it was eating, as cats are with literally ANYONE being close to their food while they're eating. It didn't scratch the bird, it gave it "leave me alone" paps. No claws! If it wanted that bird dead, it wouldn't have expressed irritation, it would have killed it. It's not a video of a wild street cat and a wild bird interacting. They clearly know each other. Is this your first time seeing a domesticated bird and cat in the same video? Nah. In the wild cats bury food to hide it and keep it from drying out, and then come back later to eat it. A stray I took in would cover her food bowl with anything she could find for about 2 years.
Cats can smell the preservatives so whenever my cat does that I usually not eat the food.

The concept is that they trade it between each other. So dif cats have it on dif days while all the others have nothing.

Unfortunately by the time the cat's swatted at it, it's probably too late for the bird even if the bird "won" the confrontation. Even the smallest pinprick of a scratch can give the bird a life-threatening infection. So can being licked.
Birds, cats, and dogs can live together, but only in situations where the predators all have a very low prey drive and there's supervision to ensure none of them licks, scratches, or bites the bird.
It's generally best to keep them separate or just not to have a bird together with cats or dogs. But people persist because they think this stuff is cute or funny. Then they're shocked when their bird suddenly gets sick and dies for "no apparent reason."

@@hime8091 Just having both isn't really the issue, it's that the cat was swatting at the bird and the owner shouldn't have let that happen. The bird shouldn't eat after cats or dogs, and if the cat swats or bites at the bird, they shouldn't be that close together.
Some cats and dogs have a low prey drive and can be trained to be safe around birds. They should still be supervised when together, owners should intervene if there's even a hint of conflict or possible licking/grooming (it's cute but cat and dog saliva can make birds sick), and birds shouldn't be allowed around cats' or dogs' food or in other situations that may cause conflict.

I used to have a cat that would scratch incessantly next to his food bowl when he was done eating. He just sit there and paw at the floor for five, ten minutes at a time, walk away, then come back two minutes later and scratch more.
After doing some research we learned that in the wild (and he was born feral, we took him in at around 6 months old) cats will cover up food if they're full and want to come back to it later, and that's what he was trying to do. We started putting a paper towel over his bowl when he's start scratching and once he couldn't see the food anymore he was satisfied that it was hidden and stopped scratching.

Not only that but cat claws can have bacteria on them that can be highly dangerous to small animals. If a claw broke skin on a bird or another small animal cats usually prey on, it could cause a deadly infection.

Kittens need at least 8 weeks (10 is best) of their Mama's milk for two reasons: To build up Antibodies for a strong Immune System which means less of a chance of health problems throughout their life. And 2) They need to "go through the motions" (as babies) of suckling & kneading (making biscuits) on their mother's tummy for both Psychological & Emotional well being. 🐱💖✌️

Why do people keep thinking that putting cats and small birds near each other is a good idea???
It can work if the cat has a very low prey drive and they are supervised, but batting at the bird is going to lead to the bird's demise. Even a small scratch or lick can result in a terrible infection for the bird. Generally speaking, best to either keep them separated or just not to have both in the first place.
It CAN be a good idea, if your kitty isn't particularly prey motivated, but that clip is absolutely heart breaking :(

@ I honestly don't think it's ever a good idea, but it can work for some cats/dogs and some birds. Some of them can interact safely, although due to the risks of infection and disease from mammalian saliva, I'm 100% with you on keeping them farther apart/not allowing for direct interaction. Even supposing they interact on a friendly level, that might mean the cat tries to groom the bird, and cat/dog/human saliva is very bad for birds.
I also can't repeat enough that they should always, always be supervised when both are loose in the same room, even if the cat has virtually no prey drive or is afraid of the bird and normally avoids it. Supervision between a predator animal and a prey animal means intervening and moving to separate them if there is even a hint that there could be conflict.
The owner in this clip is highly irresponsible for just filming it. Not only is the bird at risk of infection from a scratch, but it's at risk of falling ill from ingesting the cat's saliva after the cat's already eaten that food.

Glad someone else noticed, even one tiny scratch could have killed the bird. And no people it's not because it would bleed to death. Cat claws have a lot of bacteria which would cause an infection and birds die easily of an infection.

Most all cats try to "Cover their food" not because it stinks, it's because they want to bury it in the ground so that "they can save some for later."
It's called "Caching." They're actually burying it for the same and only reason they bury their poop, to hide the smell.
I do the exact same thing in the woods. I bury both my poop and my food (the latter in a secure container, and in seperate holes ofc), so that Mister Barr Over Tharr won't smell either, and come looking for dinner: Me.

Not always true, my cat will try to bury foods he doesn't consider edible, including mine if it has anything in it he doesn't like the smell of. If he is saving it for later, he'll have eaten some of it first.
