Thank you....this video makes me feel confident enough to tackle the job and your suggestions about silicone and keeping the top dry after use should hold the rust back.

Years ago I discovered a huge mold buildup in the rear plastic reservoir area, and to rectify that I simply removed the tray. The water fills fine without it, and I unknowingly avoided the rust problem you demonstrate here. However, I do have a rust issue with the triangular bleach reservoir. I finally removed the blue tray associated with that, and it seems to have halted the rust from spreading further, and my clothes do not seem to be discolored from rust either. My usage does not require much bleaching or fabric softener, and sacrificing these functions to increase the longevity of the machine has been well worth the 13 years of solid performance this LG washer has provided for my family of 4.

Omg I’m halfway thru this and stopped to look for a video of someone else who did it! So glad! You took this venture in before me. Thanks

Hope it is going well for you. So worth it to extend the life of the machine.

I just popped it out, so no need to respond. Plenty of rust underneath…

Did you find this area was rusting so bad it was causing rust stains on clothes?

@@elliotnewell No, it was just ugly, and driving my OCD wife crazy. I popped the plastic piece out, sanded it and put rust inhibitor on the area before I repainted with spray can appliance epoxy. It looked pretty good, but ended up having to replace the washer due to mechanical issues before I could see how long it held up.

I’m trying to do the repaint around the bleach/fabric softener reservoir that you did. Does the blue piece just pop out or are there screws holding it in? I don’t want to force and break it.

Yes, it will pop out. In fact, if you don't use bleach, just remove that plastic tray. The plastic tray holds moisture and is the primary contributor of rust to that area. Also, leave the door of your washer open between loads as to allow air drying of the interior, thus reducing any rust accumulation.
