caring for plants is like caring for an animal. its still a living thing that feels in its own way, not saying it has emotion, but if u cut off a stem or something it does get effected. i respect botanists and plant lovers!
Here's a thought...you just confiscated the plant thereby reducing supply. But the demand is still the same. So the guy with the machete goes and cuts another plant to satisfy demand. Therefore, you are part of the problem.
Nothing but respect for this guy. I'd much rather work for a decent salary doing something I love to do, than making a huge salary doing something I'd hate myself for doing.
welp demand reduces because those that sent the plant that was subsequently confiscated lose money... the idea being, try to smuggle something else that wont be confiscated... the real question is how thorough are the gate keepers...
Plant smuggling is a real problem. Some plants are not very common. Plants can be endangered just like animals can. Therefore, it is a good thing that they would have such a show.
Because someone cares about something and fully believes in the job that they are doing? The fact he has a passion that he actually follows would indicate quite the opposite to me.
Creating less supply (aka destroying supply) = artificially created demand. Creating difficulties for obtaining the supply + More expense to pay for penalties on obtaining supply = increased price (It doesn't necessarily mean higher profits.)
Why confiscated? Why someone confiscate anything from other? Plants will have 2nd life in any case. Life has changed anytime you confiscate something or not.
yeah that part i need a little clarification on... i'm sure any pathogenic species are quarantined... the rest must be regulated in terms of eco-fragility, i guess...
The only place that the Venus fly trap is found is in south Carolina...how would that be smuggled into the US if its already there? Also I understand why there's regulations: plant diseases and harmful plant.
Many people obviously don't understand the economic and practical value of plants, what sustains these people ? plants, if you never ate plants the animals you did eat would need plants and therefore you would need them as well, not rocket science
Um... The cactus is not a single species. It's like saying that the cat is not a rare animal. Species of domestic cat aren't, no, but species such as the Sumatran tiger are. Not all cacti are the same species, much like all cats of the family felidae aren't common domestic cats, so some are rare..
sigh, another example of the Dunning-Kruger effect. wiki "invasive plant species" to understand how important it is to regulate what plants are introduced into your biosphere... and no the usa isn't the only place, other places regulate too, examples: google "europe GMO labelling" and also google "uk plant import regulations"...
Ok so you end up with them like what other collectors are trying to do. Admire them for what they are. But you have the government helping you collect them. Then you exploit them in exhibition spinning the story as a educational. That will only fuel the fire. Making other collectors envious and ultimately wanting it. There are others just as passionate you. Story was great at the beginning, the ending sucked. When you make sure they healthy enough, send them back to their native country and....

You see only what you understand. What I see is a man who knows his passion and lives a life with meaning.
Nothing but respect for this guy. I'd much rather work for a decent salary doing something I love to do, than making a huge salary doing something I'd hate myself for doing.

I thought he was going to shed a tear there for a sec!
Ppl are so destructive and careless. I am glad they aren't simply destroying the confiscated plants.
I thought the guy was gonna start crying because of the cactus.
Yes, nature is a sentient being who has this thought process.
Give the plants back to the owners
Venus Flytrap is really badass ;)
native to North Carolina too!

I'm in the wrong business, I need to get in the plant black-market game O_o
I still think its best to return the plants back to its natural habitat where its vital for the ecosystem.
Dandan dan sure, but that most likely will have a negative effect on the ecosystem, plant the wrong exact species and you can kill others.
or "Plants vs Humans", considering how often they over-use the term "vs"
If it wasn't for plants, you wouldn't even be able to breathe long enough to watch that video.
Creating less supply (aka destroying supply) = artificially created demand. Creating difficulties for obtaining the supply + More expense to pay for penalties on obtaining supply = increased price (It doesn't necessarily mean higher profits.)
no. Did you watch the video? It's to keep people from smuggling in (or out) plants so that plant pathogens do not get introduced to our crops.
My what a sensitive botanist. I thought he was gonna cry.
People really don't realize that plants are alive just like animals. That see plants as mere objects, things.
I love plants so I like this job, I wouldn't do it, but I like it and respect it.
i think they would prefer "Plant Wars"
Stolen plants*
This is a good story, I enjoyed it.
I guess that guy doesn't eat vegetables because on the morals that ripping it out of the ground is bad.
Did you miss the important point of "protecting the local crops from foreign pathogens"?
Why confiscated? Why someone confiscate anything from other? Plants will have 2nd life in any case. Life has changed anytime you confiscate something or not.
I thought they searching for Plants vs Zombies species hahaha, the dancing plants :)
Surprised they have the funding for that. We're worried about plants and not our money problems? Sweet.
I think they should leaf that alone and branch out into something different :P
...them take responsibility and replant them. That would be a better ending. Find a better solution to the problem.
Why not?
Probably more educational than "Chasing UFOs".
I don't think most of you understand what this video entails.
My girlfriend wants to be a plant smuggler now
yeah that part i need a little clarification on... i'm sure any pathogenic species are quarantined... the rest must be regulated in terms of eco-fragility, i guess...
awww a plant rescue
The only place that the Venus fly trap is found is in south Carolina...how would that be smuggled into the US if its already there? Also I understand why there's regulations: plant diseases and harmful plant.
True and cool
Next up, a new documentary about painters, and watching paint dry.
Many people obviously don't understand the economic and practical value of plants, what sustains these people ? plants, if you never ate plants the animals you did eat would need plants and therefore you would need them as well, not rocket science
highly regulated now... maybe since mid 80's but we have already done enough damage with invasive pests and imported diseases.
oooh... I want to get 1st flower!
beautiful
Poor plants.
:(
Wow I do like plants but that guy's a bit off his rocker...
Botanists are babies in my eyes, due to the fact that they have an emotional connection to plants, WTF?
It's all B.S they just want to enjoy those plants because they normaly couldn't.
got that right
Please turn this into a good show and not another "reality tv" rubbernecking freak show.
Um... The cactus is not a single species. It's like saying that the cat is not a rare animal. Species of domestic cat aren't, no, but species such as the Sumatran tiger are. Not all cacti are the same species, much like all cats of the family felidae aren't common domestic cats, so some are rare..
I guess ill try to smuggle some plants if you know what i mean :)
.
So basically you steal peoples luggage
Why don't You confiscate ALL the GMO Plants?
What's the plant called at 1:02?
it's mostly orchids, anthurium, monstera and other aroids that are stolen
Wow people are ignorant in the comments.
sigh, another example of the Dunning-Kruger effect. wiki "invasive plant species" to understand how important it is to regulate what plants are introduced into your biosphere... and no the usa isn't the only place, other places regulate too, examples: google "europe GMO labelling" and also google "uk plant import regulations"...
hodor would agree with you.
