If you'll notice, the big winning squares drop down first. So what you should do is hit that play button to make the screen stop in place rather than letting it go through a full spin each time. I do it all the time and I've gotten ahead that way.

If you press the button in the middle of a spin it will stop the screen right there. Usually the wilds drop down first and pass through, but if you hit the button fast enough you'll stop the screen on a bunch of wilds.
