Good Morning Mark Happy Days Indeed. Around 1970 my mate had a SS50,I rode it with him on the back in Sheffield.Going down hill I had to put the brakes on and finished up sat on the tank with him sat on the drivers seat!!! The things you can still remember.Great Video Thanks Steve.
The biker of today started out on these things like the AP50, SS50,FS1E .The rare KTM Commet Cross, Fantics , Puch Maxi GP, Malaguti and many more . Thanks for taking us back to those crazy hazy days. 👍👍👍👍
The article did not say where the insurance quote was for, but London is / was always more expensive I suppose. I also got rid of my FS1E as soon as I was 17 moving to the unrivalled power of a CB125J. Thanks for watching!
I started riding 40 years ago this year (1983), and my first bike was an SS50. So this video was very interesting! I seem to recall petrol was about £1.20 / £1.30 a gallon back then, and the SS did about 140mpg (literally!), so my £25 weekly wage as an apprentice plumber went a fair way, in mileage terms! I think the insurance (TPF&T) was about £45-ish. Brilliant memories of a happy and care-free time of life!
as you say Jer happy days indeed! I had an FS1E and seem to remember it did about 90 mpg or so, I started in 1975 and a quid would get a gallon and a bit of pre mix from my local small petrol station. Thanks for watching!
Happy days indeed! Was I ever really that young? And those bikes - many smiles per mile and at very reasonable costs too. I recently spotted a lovely Yamaha YG1F for sale near me for £2950 and, although I'm way too tall for it, was very tempted! It's all good fun.
Happy indeed, definitely a golden age when bikes sold in huge numbers compared to today. Maybe the combination of affordability and variety were at a peak? The price of this nostalgia is not cheap though !
I had a fs1e in 1975 , xwj47m a year old £120 . I was an apprentice engineer my take home wage was just over £13 a week ! Gave my mum a £5 for board . £8 a week seems unbelievable now! Mind you that moped was all I had ! The workers on full money were on £40 a week . It seemed to go much further in those days . I had bike magazine , every one for about 15 years from number 1 , Mark Williams remember him ? Not the snooker player ! Lol
Hi Will, you started off at the same time as me, I also had an FS1E. I was another Bike magazine addict but I have not got the first 3 issues ( still looking ). Things seemed cheaper in those days especially insurance. Good memories! Thanks for watching !
I bought my brand new SS50 on the 1st August 1974. My apprentice wages were £11-96 and were so low I didn't have to pay tax or NI. Road tax and insurance was only a fiver each though and petrol 60odd pence a gallon. Happy days for 16 year olds being part of the sports moped craze.

Hi Steve, I hoped the video would stir up some memories for us old codgers, looks like it worked. Two up on a SS50 must have been a struggle though!
I'm in Sheffield too ! Ss50s were the slowest moped!
Same with my SS! Back then, as a skinny 16 year old, two of us could actually FIT onto that seat! Not a chance, these days! 🤣🤣

I just wish I could afford to buy a few and relive my youth!
March 1973 and £9 to insure my FS1E in London. The bike cost £166 new and had HP over 18 months. Couldn't wait to get a proper bike, a Honda CB250.

Too true Karl, happy days in so many ways.

Takes me back too. Given the dates, we must be about the same age (unless of course you were venturing out on a FS1E aged 25).
Sixteen on L plates, seems a long time ago now !
