  • I want to ride the TET and in this video I tell you why I chose the KTM 690 Enduro R to do that, over the CRF300 (Rally) and Yamaha Tenere 700. I also take you through the modifications that I've done to the bike.
    Rade Garage - K5 Carbon Tower and Fairing, Skid Plate with storage, Under Seat Storage
    Scotts Steering Damper
    Adventure Spec - Crash bars, Rear Rack, Side Luggage Racks
    NiceCNC - Rally Foot Pegs, Fuel filler cap
    3-D Moto - Carbon Engine Covers, Big Bertha Brake Pedal
    Barkbuster Hand Guards
    Double Take Mirrors
    It's now 95% my 'TET bike' and other than tyres could go anywhere.
    Thanks to Ollie at Wrenchride who's advice and professionalism was awesome.
    My first foray into some real travel (ie not local) will be doing the Rallymoto Icebreaker Challenges in January.
    Let me know what you think about the modifications, or ask any questions in the comments below!

    You've created a perfect *"motorcycle for the acpocalypse"*
    Only concern for me would be that it's such a deeply attractive bike, I wouldn't want to park it anywhere out of my sight for more than a couple of minutes.

      I always put at least one lock on it whenever I'm out and about and I leave the bike - even for just a couple of minutes. It only takes 30 seconds, so I do it every time. It's a minor hassle to keep my "apocalypse bike" safe!

    Enjoyed watching your video. I’ve got a 2020 690 and done plenty of mods myself. Going ‘tubliss’ made a difference for me off-road as well as getting a fuel dongle. Not night and day difference, just better and wouldn’t go back kinda thing.

      Hi Eddie - I thought about Tubliss and Tubeless. I do a fair amount of road miles, so mousses were out for me. Maybe in time I'll upgrade my wheels, but for now, I'm spending my time (and money!) riding it.

      You put Nuetech Tubliss on the 690? Nuetech is adamant that Tubliss will not fit. They say the Tubliss fronts are good for 1.6" wide rims, rears are for up to 2.15 rims. 690 wheel sizes are: Front 1.85, Rear 2.5.
      Did you relace your hubs with narrower rims?

    Nice bike mate. I have a 2021 model 690 Enduro. I went through same logic as you. Adventure bikes too heavy, smaller bikes like 300L too under powered. I have the same bark buster handguards, but also added the small Barkbuster brand, bar-end weights. They help reduce some of the vibrations at higher speeds. My favourite mod on my 690 is the seat concepts seat. Can do 12-hour rides on the bike now no problem. I haven't got a tower - but opted for the KTM small screen instead, which does a great job. After 2.5 years and 21,000 km (50% dirt), the bike still brings a huge smile to my face every ride. So versatile and ideal for Australian conditions. Cheers

    • @ProjectMotoADV
      @ProjectMotoADV  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Glossblack - I haven't found any issue with vibrations (yet), but the longest rides I've done have been about 4 hours without a proper break. Also I try to mix up the riding as much as possible and avoid motorways/highways wherever I can. I know at some point I'll have to do some 70mph 3-lane journeys, so I'll bear what you've said about the bar ends in mind - thanks for the tip.
      The seat has yet to cause issues, but like I said, I try to stay off the highways, so I'm moving around a lot I also really enjoy standing whenever possible! You've done a lot of miles on yours - it's good to know that the honeymoon period with these bikes lasts forever!!! Thanks for getting in touch.

      @@ProjectMotoADV thanks for your reply, yes all these mods are personal preferences I guess. Happy to report Zero mechanical issues so far for me. It’s my first KTM so super happy with its reliability. Valve check at 20,000 km was still perfect. I really like being able to pop front wheel up over obstacles so easily, which is much harder on smaller cc bikes like 300L and the bigger heavier ADV bikes. Cheers

    • @ProjectMotoADV
      @ProjectMotoADV  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Twix - I'm glad you like the video! I looked at the AS Mini Fairing at the Lightweight Adventurers Festival and spoke with Greg about the design. It really is 'apples and oranges' when comparing it to the Rade Garage offering. Adventure Spec were never trying to compete with the Rade alternative, but offer a slightly smaller and obviously much cheaper option. There's not quite as much room behind for navigation and obviously the fairing on the Rade Tower is bigger. The main advantage for me is the lights, especially the high beam which is so much better. I also think that the way the Rade Tower integrates with the bike is much sleeker too. However, the AS mini fairing definitely has it's place and at that price point - it's a bargain!

    I’ve done quite a few similar mods to my 2023 701 - plus a Tractive shock and WP closed cartridge fork internals. The single best thing I’ve done to my bike, however is get the ECU remapped. The fuelling is about perfect now (particularly needed at low revs, IMO).

    • @ProjectMotoADV
      @ProjectMotoADV  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Rupe. I'm not sure I'm at the skill level yet where I'd appreciate the suspension upgrades! I don't have a major issue with the fuelling either to be honest, so I'll leave the ECU alone, especially while it's still under warranty. The only thing I thought about doing for the low speed stuff was to go one tooth small on the front sprocket to save the clutch a bit when going through wiggly bits... Have you altered your drive ratios?

    • @Rupe
      @Rupe 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ProjectMotoADV Wasn’t suggesting the suspension upgrades - mentioned as a comparison to the ECU tuning. Have you played with the two modes (road and off road)? I find the off road map quite aggressive and the fuelling exaggerates this. But if yours is fine, that’s a good result. I have dropped a tooth on the front. It did make a difference, but not a huge one.

    Change the stock muffler to a Wings and a switch to a 450 gear lever which is much better. I also use a OEM short clutch lever. Trackers are great but don't last very long (1000 - 1500km).

      Hi Gilbert - I'd like the Wings end can, but I can't justify the cost at the moment. I've added 10.5kg to the bike, and the Wings can would offset that quite well though... OK, I've persuaded myself, just SWMBO to work on now!
      Why is the 450 lever better? IE what advantages does it have over the stock one? Get back to me - I'd really like to know!

      Funnily enough I'm just about to order a 14 tooth front sprocket for riding in the Taffy Dakar next week. It's a simple mod, that means that you don't have to swap out the chain, but obviously it requires adjustment! I believe that you can also go up 3 teeth at the rear too and still keep the standard chain, but that seems like a bit of a faff, for the sake of 44T-47T. I mostly ride in second off road, with lots of clutch where necessary, so the front tooth adjustment makes more sense for me.

      Unfortunately I was temporarily living in a rental while between houses - there was a flimsy up and over garage door, really easy to break into. Roller shutters are the most secure. I had two bikes stolen: a KTM 300 that had a disc lock on it - waste of time as they cut a chunk out of the disc with bolt cutters. The GasGas had a U-lock on it - the whole lot disappeared! My new house is like the one I had before the rental - roller shutter door, ground anchor (Pragmasis) and two chunky great chains to both wheels from the anchor. The garage is alarmed and has CCTV. You live and learn , but it sounds like you've got all the right kit there. That stuff ain't cheap but it cost me about three grand when my bikes went!@@ProjectMotoADV

    • @ProjectMotoADV
      @ProjectMotoADV  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Wow! "Hated it with a passion"!!! There's no changing your mind! Like I've previously said, everything is a compromise and like your WR450 (118.5kg wet and fully fuelled) or your 890R (200kg DRY!!!), each are very good at either end of the scale of what I want to do, Travel, off-road on the TET. The weight of the KTM 690 Enduro R, it's power and it's service intervals were all major influences on why I bought it, along with it's ability to carry my camping/cooking/clothing too. I'll admit that your WR will beat it off road and your current 890R will be a better touring bike, but for what I'm going to be using it for, my 170kg wet, 690 (before luggage) is perfect for my needs on the TET. Not amazing at anything, but more than competent in every category you care to mention. Although I might have to test ride an 890R now, just to make sure - although I won't want to pick it up on my own!

    • @twowheelpilot
      @twowheelpilot 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi there, i know that seems harsh, But the 690 isn't good at anything. Gear box ratios are all wrong. steering lock is terrible. Fueling was crap. Clutches are weak. Suspension harsh, seat like a plank. The 890R is simply better at everything including the off road. I literally take mine everywhere. I wish i could put some images up for you to see. Its not used for touring I can assume you off that. Its my giant dirt bike. Put it this way, the last ride i did (ONE HARD DAY) here in New Zealand my friend and i was at the top of a super ugly climb on our two 890Rs. We had to walk down and ride a 690R and KTM300SIX day up for a couple of fellers. That might give some indication of how competent the 890R is. @@twowheelpilot i believe your ability as a rider is more at play, those who are less skilled need to choose much more carefully. I had the T7, too heavy to pick up and i was afraid of getting stuck on my own, the 690 i believe is just as capable on the road once you add a tower but off road it shits all over it. The 890 shits all over the T7 because of the suspension and all the traction control options. I have been on my 690 on high country rides and it wasn't far off the 500s that were with us, the traction control was awesome up the steep rocky climbs.

      @@darrellbarry3402 Thanks for the compliment, but I'm not a pro. To be honest I normally just turn the traction control off when leaving the seal. The 890R is simply easy to ride and rides very light. I think I'd be faster on the 890R than ever I would on a 690. Roll on the KTM rally 2024. Just over a week away. Looking forward to it. not just less skilled, but also less young or less strong. I definitely agree with some of your points (gearing, steering lock, seat, …) and disagree with others. But you can’t say 890 is “better” road simply on the ground of weight: fact is I can’t lift the 890 at all, while I can lift the 690 a (small) number of times. There’s the choice for me about which to take offroad

      @@ProjectMotoADV Not even more fuel range? I get fuel anxiety on bikes with less than ~ 400k range. Other thought I'm having is to forgo engine guards and the luggage racks to save weight.

    • @ProjectMotoADV
      @ProjectMotoADV  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@useless274 The side racks give good protection and allow for ANY luggage to be fitted to the bike. So not just my lovely Kreiga bags, but tyres, spares, you name it. If it can be bungeed, or strapped, they're great. Also they only weigh 2.7kg for the pair... Some don't like the looks, some don't like the weight penalty, but the practical nature of them outweighs these issues for me.
      As far as engine guards are concerned, the weight penalty v the protection is a no brainer for me. Trying to fix an engine casing when you've put a rock through it, or replace rads, or even fairing parts in the middle of nowhere, sends shudders down my spine! Also the cost of all those repairs. Engine guards all day long. So far I've added just under 11kg to the bike including the bits I've removed, like the original front light/mask and airbox. If I wanted to save another 5kg I could get the 'Wings' exhaust, but I can't justify the expense at the moment.
      Regarding the fuel range of 160miles... I've yet to go outside the UK and 160 miles is more than 2 hours of riding, so I'd be wanting to stretch my legs or use the loo by then anyway. Perhaps it requires a tiny bit more planning, but hasn't been an issue yet. When I go abroad, to more remote places, I might strap on a fuel bladder or Rotopax 5l jerry can. That will give me an extra 65 miles. Don't forget that if you're trying to save weight by not adding engine bars, a 400km range requires a lot of fuel and therefore weight. I'd go for shorter range / lighter bike and use engine guards that will save my entire trip when I inevitably drop the bike. Imagine if you drop your bike when you're getting off the ferry at the start of your 6 month epic tour and bust your radiator!!! Engine guards are a necessity, not an option in my humble opinion. They're also another useful place that you can strap luggage to, if your'e that way inclined - dual purpose!!!

    • @ProjectMotoADV
      @ProjectMotoADV  23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Dry weight is 139kg, which is a pointless statistic to use by manufacturers, as different bike have different oil and water capacities. When was the last time you rode your bike without oil or coolant?!!!
      Wet weight without fuel is 146kg. This is a more useful stat to compare bikes with, but again, when did you ever start your journey with no fuel?!!! Also you might be looking at touring on a particular bike where fuel capacity (and fuel economy) are important statistics.
      I wrongly assumed that 1litre of fuel is roughly 1kg, but it's actually 0.75kg. So 13.5kg of fuel = 10.1kg So the fully fuelled the bike is 157.1kg, not the 159kg as previously stated.
      All I know, (having had the bike for 5000miles so far), is that it's much easier to pick up than a T7!!!

    • @miro_s
      @miro_s 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@ProjectMotoADV I think it’s best to measure wet but without fuel, firstly because you literally never have a full tank but the first 2min out of the petrol station and more importantly because then you start to weigh in the size difference in petrol tanks, which is after. It is of course a different matter for oil and coolant

    • @ProjectMotoADV
      @ProjectMotoADV  23 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@miro_s Agreed. There should be some 'gentlemen's agreement' within the manufacturers so that customers aren't bamboozled by stats and claims. Also when comparing similar bikes (such as the 690 and T7), the KTM wins on 'wet weight', but for long distance travel the T7 (especially the World Raid version) wins handsomely with its superior fuel capacity and larger fuel range. Obviously the suspension, handling, equipment, size, comfort, warranty, after sales service, service intervals, availability of aftermarket parts etc etc all play a part in choosing a bike, but some people will go on statistics and for those people, there needs to be a level playing field.

      Hi John - The Mitas E07 tyres have reached their limits, now that we're into the proper winter conditions and as I mentioned in the video, they are about to be replaced with some mud friendly Michelin Trackers. I might put the E07's back on next summer if conditions are dry and I'm doing some Roadbook Rallies that are far away.
      As far as the 'dumb stuff' is concerned... I knew that I was going to heavily modify the bike before I bought it and was happy to pay the extra cash to make the bike perfect for my needs (Travelling off road, riding the TET, wild camping trips, Rally Road Book etc) so I don't see the additions as dumb. As far as the weight is concerned, I've added a net 10.5kg to the bike. I could wipe 5kg off that with a Wings exhaust, which would make the bike only 5.5kg heavier than standard with all the 'dumb stuff' on board. I'm fairly sure that I hosed more than 5kg of mud off the bike yesterday!
      Thanks for watching and taking the time to provide some some great consumer advice that will hopefully help other people that are watching my channel.

      Hi Rich - thanks for your concern! Unfortunately applications to be my wife (and thus tell me how to spend my money) closed 20 years ago!!! Actually I've tried to steer away from using 'dealership' parts on the bike, with only the KTM heated grips (which I forgot to mention in the video!) being the only 'factory' fitted part. Hopefully, from here on in, the only money I'll be spending will be the entry to events and campsite fees.
