This is a good lesson in 2 ways. Lesson 1: What not to do when handling a grease fire Lesson 2: In panic mode, even expert knowledge goes out the window. That's why you have to calm down when dealing with events like these. She got lucky and I'm happy it turned out that way.
Facts! I had a similar thing happen in my early years of learning how to fry chicken. My gf tossed the kitchen towel at the fire and I am glad she missed. I just remained calmed, and turned the stove off, then got the flower and and poured it over the fire. After everything was good...then I proceeded to grill my girlfriend. Told her dont EVER try to put out a fire with a kitchen towel. Had it landed on the fire it would have been worse.
@@Mercenary-1914 actually a wet kitchen towel is great for putting out most fires other than grease fires, a wood or silicon spatula that you left on a burner that caught fire would be better extinguished with a damp kitchen towel than flour. Might want to clarify your "dont EVER try to put out a fire with a kitchen towel" to "a grease fire".
Expert knowledge that doesn't relate that much with the subject at hand. Yes, they get taught the overall idea that correlates to uncontrolled fires, but they don't train most engineers to fight them or at least how to react to them. A chemical engineer might've responded better.
She had time waaay before the fire started to prevent that fire. Way before she began to panic she had time to stop the smoke and turn everything off. She's an idiot.
I learned to "put a lid on it" many many years ago, when I worked in fast food. The problem is sometimes we go into panic mode, and the knowledge we have goes out the window.
Lets be honest..her not remembering to put a lid on the fire wasnt even the biggest issue..her coutiuing to cook despite the room filling up with enough smoke to trigger the fire alarms(and not even trying to fan away the smoke or turn on the fan and lower the heat) is the bigger problem. Who does that? Who seea that much smoke, hears the alarm and keeps cooking like nothing is happening?
I’m a firefighter in Canada.. we all laugh because she did this on the internet.. but she isn’t nearly alone.. we get calls like this one all the time.. Even smart, well meaning people can panic and make a bad situation even worse. I’m glad she wasn’t hurt (or evicted).
In the Navy, I was at a firefighting school where they showed what happens when you handle a grease fire wrong. They had a big deep-fat fryer that was on fire. Then the instructor, in full gear while we were all like 40 feet back, threw a 3-gallon bucket of water on the fire. The fireball went up like 20 feet and there was actually a mushroom cloud from it, dead serious it was like a bomb going off. That made a big impression on me at age 18, I joined the Navy right out of high school. We also learned that if you have a fire in the engine compartment of your car and a fire extinguisher, don't mess with unlatching the hood and all that, all you're going to accomplish is to burn your hands. Spray the extinguisher through the grill, works like a charm.

I agree, good on her. The journalist didn’t have to add that sarcastic remark at the end.
I think this was a great learning experience for her.
This is a good lesson in 2 ways.
Lesson 1: What not to do when handling a grease fire
Lesson 2: In panic mode, even expert knowledge goes out the window.
