- North Sea. Off west coast of Denmark. Danish authorities responded to a call from the cruise ship for help by sending a helicopter to evacuate a critically ill passenger for hospital treatment. Amazing performance by both the helicopter and the cruise teams.
It’s reassuring to know there’s well equipped rescue teams in other areas of the world who pride themselves on saving others lives. This was a rare depiction. Thanks

I love how amateurs with no experience whatsoever second guess the professionals who do this work every single day. I used to work on a helicopter flight deck. (USCG) Even with every sailor being fully trained (tie down crew, crash rescue team, firefighters, landing safety officer, safety observer), and using a helicopter which is designed to fit on our flight deck, and having a flight crew which has been fully trained and certified to land on that particular vessel, it was one of the most dangerous things I've ever been exposed to in my 10 year career. I actually received extra pay, Helicopter Flight Deck Incentive Pay, just to do it. Trust me, Navy and Coast Guard pilots are not about to land on any civilian ship if there's any other way to complete a rescue. The helicopter is moving one way while the ship is bouncing around another way. It's extremely dangerous in the best of conditions. That's why you just saw these Danish airmen pull off a perfect rescue without landing. That's the way it's done! Bravo Zulu! And PS: To all the know-it-alls, the patient is alive. No country will risk the lives of a flight crew just to transport a dead body. Of course the patient is wrapped up for protection, including his face. Did you see the airman remove the pillow from the stokes litter so it wouldn't get sucked into the engine air intake? Why would the ship's doctor give a pillow to a dead man? And why the hell would a white-colored sheet indicate the man is dead? (Yes...Simon Priisholm said that like it was a fact) Everybody's an authority, yet nobody knows what they're talking about.
And the issue is not the size of the flight deck. Watch some videos of rescues from giant cargo ships or super tankers. They have huge flight decks, yet the flight crew still does a hoist pick-up without landing. The pilots can't trust the condition of that flight deck, or the skills, competence, and training of the ship's crew. These are people they've never met, nor theoretically will EVER meet. That's why they hoist.

I was on that cruise ship and watched it live. There were 2 kids (accompanied by their grandma) who drowned in the pool. One was unfortunately DOA, the other was in critical condition.
i don't wanna be a know it all but isn't using a branchar less scary for the patient? As i see they only use one strap around his body. If it was me i would totaly freak out.

Spectacular effort by all involved. This has to be the worst nightmare for anyone, let alone an older couple. Hope the passenger got the help they needed in time and made a speedy recovery. This is what can be done when people work together to help one another.
I went on a cruise not long ago and there was a group of old people who were hilarious they had the same sense of humor as me (very deadpan) and the oldest who was pushing 100 passed the night before our last stop. It was a sad ending to the cruise but they all seemed happy she had fun in her last days.

@Kevin Sealey its better to keep the ship moving and heading into the wind so it helps keep lift and if anything happens
During helicopter ops on our ship the correct procedure is to ask the flight commander what he wants from the ship, he’d often request a heading change but never usually a speed change. They were happy to hover whilst we were making 17 knots.
True skill by all of these crews on this video, including those carrying the stretcher!
This helipad is located at the stern of the ship and no wake is being made from the ship therefore it is stationary

That was brilliantly done. The excellent men and women who carry out this incredible work every day are so important and form such a vital link in the chain to supporting and helping us when we get into trouble and need help. They are superbly skilled, highly trained and very brave, (though they will never admit to that last bit!). This was a fantastic demonstration of team work at its highest level and really well captured on film from the ship (well done whoever the camera person was!). It is good to know that around the globe, from so many developed nations, people who have dedicated their lives to this work are out there when the call comes. Thank you to every single one of you.
That was sobering to watch but, so well done with such care and respect ... We all should be inspired by their professionalism and by their acts

I worked in cruise ship for 5 years, and I have seen several "Emergency Medical Evacuation" live. The most amazing thing is that the helicopter has to match the speed with the speed of the ship, irrespective of the ever changing airflow, and how both the helicopter pilot and the ship's captain coordinates the entire evacuation is the most daring scenes I have ever seen. An excellent job too is done by the ship's medical team to safely harness the stretcher and the bedridden patient, clip it on to the helicopter's winch and take the entire load up inside the helicopter seems nothing less than an action packed Hollywood sequence.

I have actually been on a cruise ship where this happened. The helicopter made 3 or 4 practice approaches to the ship, each time asking the ships captain turn the ship so the helicopter faced directly into the wind. A basket was used in this case and the passenger was winched aboard the hovering helicopter. As soon as he was on the helicopter, it rose straight up several hundred feet, banked sharply, and raced for Nassau. It was spectacular to watch and it was clear that everyone involved was highly trained. My hats off to them.

Now those are heroes, including the helicopter pilot to be able to hover for that long. Awesome.
SAR helicopters like this has 3 or 4-axel autopilot and modes to keep it automatically steady and still in relation to wind and ship, a pilot doing this kind of hover would be a too big liability and not normal procedure for off-shore hovers.

OK even I have to admit that those guys looked like badasses.
I remember vividly a 1989 drowned diver incident we were on. The diver was recovered from 75 ft . We transported him to shore with the RIB and handed him off to the US Navy Diver recovery team. They flew him out in much the same way as that helicopter did. The divers wife was on the other side of the USCG boat Point Bennett. She must have been crushed. We were out of Canada and responded to a number of US boaters transiting our area. July 2nd or 3rd 1989., i remember his name. Russell Johnson 58 yrs old.

when these guys go home at night they know they have saved a life.i seen it done on a ferry once on the way to spain.was the best and bravest thing i have ever seen.i dont know how the patient got on but they came out of the sky and the whole ferry was buzzing at what we watched.respect to every emergency services throughout the world

To all the people saying why didn't it land, that Helipad is rated to a max rotor diameter of 15M and whilst not load capacity marked that I could see most pads designed for rescue choppers are rated to a weight of 6.8 tons, the NH90 helicopter seen here has a rotor diameter of 16.3m and a weight of ~10 tons. Not to mention that landing on a moving ship is one of the most dangerous maneuvers in aviation, even when you have a full deck crew, even if the deck was capable of handling the helicopter a hover and hoist is vastly safer.
Except it was a AW101 and not a NH90.

@@smithersrob Yeah, only way they would attempt an actual landing is if the helicopter experienced a mechanical emergency and it probably wouldn't end well because of the weight.

If you're wondering why the helicopter didn't land on the deck is simply because no Helicopter will ever land on a ship deck if it has a boom. Landing in general but especially on a ship deck is extremely dangerous. Hovering is reality easy and safe on this helicopter (AW 101) because of advance avionics w/ auto hover trim control and flying is safe and easy, landing is difficult and dangerous and helicopters only do it when the absolutely need to.
Because the bow will only accept a "WINCH ONLY RESCUE" from that pad.

She must have been so frightened going up in that helicopter. The crew and pilot were amazing.
Wow! Picking up the partner and even the suitcase is something out of the ordinary!! In a life-threatening situation we would never consider pickung up relatives. In such a situation sometimes every minute counts and (though its sometimes hard I admit) we would never take the time for doing this. Remarkable!
That ship could have 10 to 15 degrees of pitch if the seas are rolling! Bravo-Zulu to the rescue group, great skill is very apparent -- they are who I would want to see if it were me needing help!

Extremely impressive. The pilot is top notch, the aircraft didn’t seem to move at all. It’s always interesting to see how other countries do this task and what equipment they are using. Like the yoke they put on the litter to keep it from spinning. And how the final man off the ship attached his bag to the hoist instead of leaving it on his back. Either way stellar job.
The EH101 has a auto pilot mode, that keeps it steady in situations like this.
all the "experts" on here are ridiculous. NO, they shouldn't have landed, its an unneeded risk to the crew of the ship, the helicopter, and the passengers on the cruise. and NO the patient wasn't dead.

It said "Critically ill" not "dead." They flew him to a hospital for treatment. What is there to treat if he was dead?
Def not dead. Those ship's have morgues on board (req for any with over 600 pax). He was just wrapped up in a heat blank to keep him warm and protect him form elements during transport.
BNSF1995 believe it not cruise ships have morgues. If the person was dead they would have just put him there until the cruise finished.

Why did the captain have music feeding through the ship"s speaker system throughout the exercise? That would have been quite distracting for everyone involved - the patient, the crew, the onlookers.

That was the safest way of getting them onboard. Besides, that helicopter looks way too big for that landing area.
I thought about that too! If the seas were pitching, it wouldn't be easy to make a precise landing on that little deck, although I'm sure they could if they had to. But hoisting is much safer with the rescuer descending to help below! Bravo!
That patient looked to be probably 200+ pounds, but then, that heli can hoist many more pounds than that!

Just curious. Why didn’t the helicopter land on the Helipad?
In my best estimation, the Helipad was not rated for an aircraft of that size.
Probably safer to winch em up than to risk landing on that tiny helipad.
Probibly to heavy for the helipad to handle and I'm not sure if a proper fire crew is ready

This is badass pilots, all trained in Afghanistan.....Together with the Brits and US ....
It is a fact that those heli pilots from Viet Nam, Afghanistan and any war zone actually, are the best in the world! It's too bad they get so much practice, but that's war, and we appreciate them unreservedly! Bravo-Zulu, men! And that includes from whatever country they are from. They all serve when necessary.
