    Keith Carlock just absolutely owns - OWNS - doubles. He's uniquely musical while being a technical beast. I love his asymmetric style. And he's a pure conduit for the music, it just flows right through him.

    This is an outstanding trio playing music of rare brilliance and originality. All three are wonderful musicians, but Keith Carlock's performance in particular is passionate and compelling. It's great to see an appreciative audience for this.

    Keith's playing blooms, tumbles, and rolls... reminds me of Mitch Mitchell (Hendrix). So good. If you are going to be just a trio, you HAVE to have a drummer like this.

    This is my favourite incarnation of WK and his band. I had the pleasure of seeing this trio put on a clinic and a show while studying at St. FXU. Blows me away every time.

    A little K3 moment - 10:46 KC looks at WK, and attempts to cue, 16th fill to final theme - but Wayne is eyes closed, knowing his drummer can still get one more, to "11" as it were - and Carlock delivers 8 more bars higher still (the face 10:58) - awesome

    It’s as if Krantz is keeping time and Carlock is soloing around it. Absolutely different and masterful. Hasn’t he been Steely Dan’s touring drummer for a while? I saw SD in Austin 4-5 years ago and I didn’t know it was Carlock on the drums but I was constantly saying to myself “damn this drummer is too legit!”

    Carlock has something truly great that I haven't heard in the playing of Weckl, Coliauta, Bruner or any of the other masters. Something real and organic going on here. He has the technique but doesn't make it obvious like the others tend to do. The best player I've heard yet.

    • @rawdonwaller

      Wayne is so unconventional, -when he plays more inside I think thats when he's at his best..He's naturally so abstract that his style is gonna be outside automatically ! I thought of Jimi Hendrix's "Who Knows" off of the "Band of Gypsys" cd - his use of a ring modulator style device at the end of his solo is the best application the ring mod I've heard to date .

Mr Carlock is the joint that has managed to roll-up the many artists I've idolized throughout the years, technicians and originators alike. He's Bonham and Weckl's love child- living proof that you can possess it all.

Traditionalists of old would be thrilled with his skill set, and modernists with their jaws dropping at this guys chops. Saying he is in a class by himself is not a cliche'. why is the name on the headstock covered?

    • @fudgesauce
      @fudgesauce 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because the maker has an obnoxious "logo" consisting of the maker's name printed over and over. Krantz has said he loves the guitar, but finds the lettering distracting, so he covered it up. It's been that way for years.

    Oh...I know why...cause I haven't practiced hours and hours every day all my life. Every day. That may not matter because you need a bucket of talent too.But guys at this level have reached a muscular level where not alot of this movement goes through the brain. Its like the feet and the hands are talking directly to each other.
    He's almost at Buddys level but needs to mix it up a little. keith has amazing left hand. But Buddy could play any thing at prodigy level.
    I love this guy.

    • @samm1809
      @samm1809 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I bet there's things Keith does that Buddy would have to practice to accomplish. He rarely ventured out of a big band environment, so could Buddy Rich play with the sort of light touch and precisely the textures that Keith is using? Would Wayne Krantz be clambering to make a second album with Buddy Rich above all other drummers? I doubt it. Buddy Rich is someone to aspire to, but his way of doing things wasn't the only display of mastery on the drums. Buddy couldn't play like Vinnie Colaiuta, Tony Williams, Elvin Jones and so on, even Keith. Buddy had kung fu level hands, but on a musical level he was like a master chef who cooked only traditional meals, with about 25% butter. The food shakes the ground, but there's other stuff out there too.

      well sorry you did not enjoy this, did you even listen to the whole thing? as you can see with the comments here and the audience reaction at the end this piece is unreal because its so damn good. these guys played in steely dan and toto, their musical abilities are over the top, if you dont like it I guess you need to do some more listening to fusion rock in general or just stick with more classical pop rock arrangements which usually have a simpler structure I guess this is not for everyone, but its definietely one thing it is not, bad ;)
