+Capilya wrong- that is Light Infantry drill @140 paces per minute - The Royal Ghurka Rifles are part of our Light Infantry heritage. We take our lineage from the Light Division 1755 (you may know of The 95th Rifles as in TV series Sharpe) and this drill was used to deadly effect from the peninsula wars of 1800s to defeat Napoleon right up to and including Afghanistan - and onward we march faster and at a higher state or readiness than any other Army Infantry force in the world.

+Luke Woods Dorset Photographer Actually you are both right. The Gurkhas are part of the Light Infantry and march at the 140 beats per minute. It is just that the Gurkhas are a bit better known outside the UK then the rest of the Light Infantry. No disrespect to the others but most Americans think of the Royal Marines, one or the other of the Household regiments, the Life Guards and the Gurkhas when they think of the British military. Of those, the Gurkhas are the only ones to march at the higher tempo. Therefore, when the 140 bpm pace is seen or heard the mind immediately jumps to what you know.

We taught the Gurkhas everything they know - but not everything we know :-)
