Helmet! I hydrofoil with my kiteboarding gear. I got the worst concussion I've ever had getting hit with the foil like how you guys went over at 3:05, 3:14 and 4:06. On another note awesome job shortboarding the foil!
the foils perform better on smaller waves that usually don't break, it's what they're meant for, to make small terrible waves feel like good ones, that's why they were having a harder time. Looked like fun tho! keep it up!
the way to do is have foots straps and tow in, you really need the foot straps for controlling the board and usually the ones you paddle in with try to buck you off on the take off, my mate shapes boards and weve messed around with a few hydrofoil configurations so yea
LOL @ Atua's comment: "It's right in between surfing and flying." That thing is bizarre! It actually lifts the board itself right out of the water! Never seen anything like it.
...damn...what an honest video you presented to us guys...thank you for that...awesome...I am getting ready for my first foiling this Spring/Summer over here in Chicago...a bet has been set that I would get up in my first day ($10k)...seeing you brave guys I think I already lost my bet... ...thank you one more time...stay safe...all the best...
Thanks for sharing this guys! looks a lot of fun and super scary seeing everyone falling off of it. I'd be terrified of those foil blades cutting me in half. Pretty convinced foil surfing would be a little easier attempting to ride out in the channels at high tide where the waves don't break or mushy breaking waves. Easier said than done I suppose. Yewww!!!
Looked like that will take a couple of weeks to master. Have seen this type of setup used behind a boat also. Tim might want to consider letting you guys borrow one for a bit. It would get some good exposure on the tribe channel. Looked like Atua might be hooked already. Awesome Stuff!!
Hey i am a sponsored paddle boarder from South African I would say one advise for the hydrofoil catch the wave much earlier, you would be suprised how far you can catch the wave out on a cleaner water
Atua long time I haven't seen your vlogs, putting your fins backwards was something to see you did ok I would have not done it due to my age and would not risk destroying my surf board, the foil surfing was really insane, can't believe how tall you have gotten but I have lost your & your web site address but thanks to Theadore he gave it to me, well great surfing take care and if you are on another web site please let me know rex me on Facebook regards Frank.
Matityah it's the riders not the design. Everyone pops up to high when they are first learning. You need to learn to be very precise with fore and aft foot pressure. They'll get it with more practice!
These things generate crazy amounts of lift with acceleration. I've used a horue foil before and it just wants to jump out of the water all the time. You'll notice that any experienced rider will keep their back foot over the mast of the foil and their front foot further forward. This is to keep the nose down and counter-act all that lift. Because it was a learning session for these guys they hadnt quite found the balance.
The lift is normal (pitch), not sure about the roll though, the short board seemed to flop over sideways much more than I've ever experience on my foil. Never had that problem before. Maybe the wing isn't wide enough
Tim Zarraonandia I agree, the anhedral (wingtips curve down) design promotes instability. As soon as there is a tip over to one side, the otherside is going to get more vertical lift
The reason why it was kicking up is because the position of the box was not shaped flat, causing the foil to be vectored vertically... next time I come out, I'll bring mine... miss you Chris & Atua! Hope life is good in Costa! 🙂
i think you need to check out a youtube video titled "California Foil Surfing with Kai and Friends" Now that is foil surfing. There's no paddling needed really.
Thanks but I'll stick to the regular boards. I don't think these foils are meant to be surfed in choppy waters plus I'd hate seeing someone riding right into me on one of these.. even if you duck dive it'll get you, get you bad.
These seem no way near perfected. I think they need to be shorter and you need 2 - one in the middle and one at the back (as currently is) - this will prevent that high bucking movement and will also help to avoid bottoming out in the sand when it gets shallow (where waves tend to break).
Ooof, no thanks. Some of those wipeouts looked nasty and have the potential to be way more nasty. It's a whole different ballgame when the board isn't the point you rotate around, so much potential to land on the rail of your board or jam that foil into your back or neck/head or get in the way of the still moving foil. I bet it's indeed a trip rising a foot above the water and the different handling but that novelty probably doesn't last that long and you don't really have the right circumstances to make the most of a foilboard there.

That actually looks super hard, soon as you get lift the whole game changes and then boom hello rail surgery.
Atua really excels at all the crazy surfing stuff. The foil surfing wasn't any different. That was awesome!
In retrospect, you guys were way ahead of the crowd! Not many people were even trying to foil 6 years ago!
Glad to see the 30 day vlog challenge re energized you into making more videos even after the 30days was over
Kai Lenny makes it look so easy. This seems much more realistic than a pro that could surf a bank safe filled with gold bars.
Kai Lenny makes it look so easy.. when you see how it bucks, so much more dangerous that you'd think it would be!! well done guys
That was awesome!! I couldn't stop smiling! Great video!!!
Scott Barth tt

Atua that I call insane but pretty cool once you get Balance and moving, thank your dad for sharing this experience, take care.

as if surfing wasn't difficult enough already, now you can ride a bucking bronco surf board!! 😆😆
Looks difficult but fun! You guys did great!
Wow Atua you was awesome on that thing, way to go bro!
I can only assume you decided to do this after my suggestion! So glad you did, awesome video!
looks dangerous af ahah

$1700?? He had to ask three times just to make sure he heard correctly.
Some of those wipe outs looked brutal haha, loved the vid keep it up!
That..... looked..... AWESOME!!!!!!!😀😀😀

Wow guys that was SOOOOOO much fun .... if just a little scary! PURA vida y aloha!!!!!!!
WOW that surfboard looks so fun👌
Hey i am a sponsored paddle boarder from South African I would say one advise for the hydrofoil catch the wave much earlier, you would be suprised how far you can catch the wave out on a cleaner water
Was just surfing with Tim the other day lol. He caught a wave before me and zipped by me on that thing at like 25 mph 😂
I'd love to check out the AHD SeaLion, SUP/windurf/foil but yes expensive!
Yeah I have seen hydrofoil boards they loook sooooooo cool
would love to see more vids like this
I've seen some pictures of guys getting mangled by these things... definitely shouldn't be in a crowded lineup..
Those things are lethal! If you don't hurt yourselves think of the other surfers!!!
GO Atua Your Awesome!
I just watched a video of a guy surfing 6 minutes straight on this and i was like damn It looks so easy let me check other vídeos.
*Epic!!!! But it looks so sketchy when you fall haha*
There is now a board that is motor powered and hydrofoiled and looks incredible like your hovering on air with a wireless accelerator in your hand.
Playa Hermosa north of Santa Teresa, Costa Rica? Love that spot.
instructive. it looks like the major issue is lack of speed, this is way harder than the tow-in into larger mushier surf looks like
looks like it takes a much bigger wave (more speed) to get these going...but, yeah, good way to break some ribs
gotta start somewhere! Great video
AHHHHH I was waiting for this video!!!!
Yes love the foil surfing Evan know I have never
Atua long time I haven't seen your vlogs, putting your fins backwards was something to see you did ok I would have not done it due to my age and would not risk destroying my surf board, the foil surfing was really insane, can't believe how tall you have gotten but I have lost your & your web site address but thanks to Theadore he gave it to me, well great surfing take care and if you are on another web site please let me know rex me on Facebook regards Frank.
That looks like a lot of fun! It also looks like you have to be really subtle with it, like flying a helicopter.
I think it works better with the snowboard boot locks like Laird uses....and alot more speed...
actually...i really enjoy wiping out when surfing, specially on a hot summer
Generally it takes me about 60 seconds to eat lunch before surfing. I get too stoked and eat fast.
I would be freaking out about being decapitated if I rode that thing
There's something wrong with that design. I haven't seen many other foils to lift the board up so high when you reach certain speed.
Matityah it's the riders not the design. Everyone pops up to high when they are first learning. You need to learn to be very precise with fore and aft foot pressure. They'll get it with more practice!

There is nothing wrong with the design....these guys are trying to learn to foil on way to fast and steep of a wave.
The lift is normal (pitch), not sure about the roll though, the short board seemed to flop over sideways much more than I've ever experience on my foil. Never had that problem before. Maybe the wing isn't wide enough

bro awesome vid and your my favourite youtuber
Gotta control your fin angles.. or pump it. But you keep pointing your fin upward and it launches the board up! Be on it!
That's crazy, I've been watching your videos for a while, and someone I know was in one of them😂 I
Tim Nolte!!!! OBXFam
Were did u surf? @iSurfTRIBE
Hi It, it looked difficult, even with your experience.
I’m new to this channel if you have any Tutorials on surfing could you please tell me. 🏄
i dont get why you use hydro on a good wave. some country that have flat sirf around 1 ft 6sec could be okay for hydro
Looks like a waste of money! Love you guys videos!
The reason why it was kicking up is because the position of the box was not shaped flat, causing the foil to be vectored vertically... next time I come out, I'll bring mine... miss you Chris & Atua! Hope life is good in Costa! 🙂
I'd like to know what the title of the surfing song is.
Atua was anticipating falling off and jumped early Lol
that looked so hard to try to stay balanced
What beach are they surfin at
What country do you Guys live? Just wondering🙃
How do you make your coffee smoothies?
You can get plans and make em brothers
You have to be more far forward or it’ll breach also try behind the boat.
this kids make hydrofoils look dangerous , bcause those conditions are gnarly for learning
this was dope! keep it up!
absolutly nutzo!
i think you need to check out a youtube video titled "California Foil Surfing with Kai and Friends"
Now that is foil surfing. There's no paddling needed really.
I hate those wipeouts where you land on the board. Seems even worse the way this thing throws you off lmao
You should get one
That's sick
You are meant to paddle into waves very far out they are meant to catch the swells energy before breaking
Holy shit that was scary to watch. I thought fins were dangerous but what if the blades thingy hits you
Thanks but I'll stick to the regular boards. I don't think these foils are meant to be surfed in choppy waters plus I'd hate seeing someone riding right into me on one of these.. even if you duck dive it'll get you, get you bad.
Looks like you're trying to stand on a ironing board XD
I wouldn't want to be around that in the water
good video
Try surfing with one fin in back wards sending out a big yeeeeeeeew to u
where's? The gopro videos
finally they used my idea lololo
whats it for
Hawaii has these everywear
Very dangerous! Imagine you fell on the carbon blade...
These seem no way near perfected. I think they need to be shorter and you need 2 - one in the middle and one at the back (as currently is) - this will prevent that high bucking movement and will also help to avoid bottoming out in the sand when it gets shallow (where waves tend to break).
you have to put most of your weight at the front
Haven't we had enough surf-mutants thrown at us? Now this?
Ooof, no thanks. Some of those wipeouts looked nasty and have the potential to be way more nasty. Sick!!
maybe advisable to wear a helmet
Go paddle boarding and use it like a longboard
atua was pissed everyone was stuffed in car
It was worth a try but looks pretty dopey and dangerous, ha :-)
the foil looks too far forward on both boards
crazy dangerouse but sickk
You were catching it way to late in the white water
Just remember all of you trying to surf on a foil, you are not Kai Lenny .!!
1600 for board and foil
