  • This video is a bit longer, but it's a mini-workshop on how I mordant wool for natural dyeing using Alum, Copper and Tin. I hope you will join me in this series as we create color on yarn and fabric. www.thefiberpusher.com

You can soak a piece of copper pipe in vinegar for a few weeks. The blue liquid resulting from this can be used for the copper mordant. Also, you can use a copper pot to dye in, but keep in mind the whole dye pot will be altered by the copper in the pot. Subsequently, you can use an aluminium pot for alum, and an iron pot for iron. The results are less predictable, but they do work to some extent.

I use about 4% copper sulphate to WOF when I dye. After I rinse the yarn w water do you think there’s any chance of the copper residue in the yarn being harmful? Thanks so much😊

After dyeing and rinsing, there shouldn't be any residue remaining.

Thank you!! There's going to be more. The next one will be mordanting cellulose fibers.

I don't have any experience with fungi dyeing, but it's on my experiment list.

Well now i'm curious. Using a sulphate or a nitrate will make the hydrous solution somewhat acidic; what happens to the dye job if you bring that to a neutral 7 pH, or push it over into the alkaline side? Adding baking soda to the copper sulphate solution will cause copper to precipitate out in the form of copper carbonate--will that still be effective as a mordant? At any rate, /liked, /subbed

Good question. I've only added baking soda to dye pots to raise the pH. I've used it in an alkanet bath to get a lovely silvery gray. I need to dig out the dye pots and get back to experimenting.
