Good luck for the weekend Tommy. Could someone explain why he’s on the 450 having ridden the 250 all year and what’s the difference between open and 450 class since they seem to ride 450s anyway, cheers.
The Open class allows riders to race whatever size bike they like, but most (if not all) riders choose a 450 because of the extra HP and the power advantage it gives them, especially at a fast, sprawling track like Matterley which demands quite a lot from an engine. While Tommys 250 is probably very good on a domestic level it's no factory bike or Star Yamaha. A lot of tuning is required to make a 250 competitive at GP/ProMotocross level and the added strain on a 250 engine means there's a higher chance of mechanical failure. Whereas stock 450 engines tend to be pretty good out of the crate so in theory there should be less disparity between a Dirt Store 450 and the factory bikes. All things considered a 450 is a wiser choice, especially for someone like Tommy who has years of experience racing them anyway.
