  • Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born into a strict Irish Catholic family in 1859. Even though Doyle rejected faith at school, he was drawn to the "Spiritualist Craze" in the 19th Century. He started out as a doctor and broke into the world of literature when he wrote, "Sherlock Holmes". As he got deeper into spiritualism, he devoted more of his time spreading his beliefs and became a member of the British Society for Psychical Research. #Biography #SirArthurConanDoyle

And yet he was involved in a number of real criminal cases. Solving a number of cases some high profile. Worth learning about.

What a one-sided, dumbed-down, disrespectful commentary on the rich and multifaceted mind that was A. C. Doyle! As if the Sherlock Holmes stories/novellas are the only ones of any worth in his varied opus. Some of his supernatural/weird stories are actually very fine and enjoyable literature.

It’s not accurate to say Conan Doyle’s interest in Spiritualism inspired his belief in fairies. In fact, the truth is quite the opposite. Doyle’s Father, who died in a mental institution, and his uncle Dickie (a famous Illustrator) both had lifelong beliefs in fairies, a relatively common thing in Scotland at the time. Conan Doyle’s similar beliefs began when he was quite young. While his promotion of the infamous Cottingley fairy episode did make him look ridiculous to many, his belief was sincere. Incidentally, while the girls involved in the Cottingley fairy photograph incidents later confessed that their images were mostly fraudulent, they claimed that they had, in fact, seen real fairies “down the beck” and Frances, the younger of the two, claimed one of the fairy photos was genuine to her dying day.

I give a thumbs-up for the video and for Mr. Doyle's honour. What we tend to call "spiritualism" is actually Spiritism which did become a fad in the late decades of the 19th century. If he got convinced by the existence of spirits it would be good to deepen a research about more details of his life. He had a scientific mind and there is no denial on that so Why not? Mediuns have been everywhere for millenium. Congrats for the video again.

A bit of a nut case, with lots of unproven claims. Just like his hero Sherlock Holmes.
Both ACD and SH are insufferable; the only guy who could stand them is Dr Watson.
