I put them in a zip lock bag then I dump about 6 table spoons od minced garlic that you can but in the store in the qt jars. I was struggling to catch catfish on chicken livers this year and I've been watching lots of TH-cam videos about catfishing and most people said to use cut bait. Soon as I tried it I caught 2 5lb channel cats. I was so excited! Cut bait is now my go to!
I wouldn't count liver out tho I'm the exact opposite from you I've had tons of luck with channels and blue on liver but not much luck on live baits or cut

Thank you for all the information, I'm just starting my journey of learning to catch these wily whiskers but I'm loving this with lots of help from videos on TH-cam. Thank you
I generally like to night fish for catfish on lake conroe during the hot months of the year. My go to bait is shrimp. I buy a two pound bag of frozen shrimp with the heads on. Shell and fish with a circle hook. I normally catch channels two to four pounds with the occasional blue or small flathead. If I want to use liver I don't mess with the chicken livers I go to walmart and buy a pack of frozen beef liver. It's sliced thin and while semi frozen you can cross cut it into strips that are the right size for the hook and a lot tougher than chicken liver. I also pour soured milo over the side of the boat from time to time to keep the fish there.
I use hot dogs soaked in crawl fish spray. I put a piece of nylon stocking over the hook. Keeps little fish from nibbling off. Sometimes, can use the same bait two or three times. On lake O the Pines
best bait i ever found was when i went to the grocery store and saw some calamari that was in the sell now bin, so i bought it and left it outside for a few days. cats L O V E D it, and the squid is rubbery enough to stay on the hook really well. would reccomend. shrimp works great too.
I catch yr round on lake texoma with shad . Ive never had luck with punch baits. Grew up using liver but when i learned to use a cast net my whole fishing career changed. Whether its catfish or striper shad is "my" best bet.
When I was a kid in the early 90s, we used to go river fishing for Blues and Flatheads in the summer. A couple days before the trip, we would spend a day fishing for Creek Chub Minnows, and that night we would spend a night catching Leopard Frogs. I liked catching Blues, and swore by the Chubs. My Grandpa liked catching Flats and swore by the frogs. Nice to know all those years before internet we were pretty spot on lol
Little Stinker Punch Bait Chicken breast Live and cut Bluegill Shrimp. I fish for channel cats in Central and southern IL. I am 14 and my PR is 26.2 lbs.
Well alrighty then. I think I can remember that. I'm so stoked now! It's a quarter to one am here in ga. I'm not going anywhere till I get my Penn fathom and a fmj.
In North Mississippi a 50 acre oxbow lake i fish live crickets for channel catfish. For blue catfish cut shad and strawberry koolaid hotdogs. Large shinner minnows for bigger blues.
Dried Chicken liver with garlic powder and strawberry koolaid packet shook up in a bag or night crawlers works great for channel cats. Blue cats shad or skipjacks. Flat heads worms or other live bait crawfish works really well for catfishing and bass.
Catfish Edge it's good as gold. Mid 50's during the day. Just waiting for the fish to bite from the bank. Hopefully this summer me and my wife will be coming down to do some fishing with Catfish Edge.
Catfish Edge I use shad live bait and worms and every time I only catch flatheads on worms and there small catfish why won't they go for my other baits
I guess the best for anyone is what works for that situation. I prefer fresh fish from the same body either live or cut but also add what is known as "long Call" type of attractor/lure when using different rigs but it certainly isn't something magical. I guess maybe it is if you're Berkley. To make attractors, I just use the same thing the big bait companies that make it use. You know, various 100% pure cold pressed fish oils like, Herring, Atlantic Salmon, Shellfish, Lobster, Anchovie and of course, Crawfish oil. The two best things about pure cold pressed oils are that they honestly smell like you actually have the fish right up to your nose and that they also taste exactly like it..... A word of caution when using pure cold pressed oils or other types of essential or extract oils like Anise, Cheese, sweetcorn, Etc, etc, etc. Is that these oils are CRAZY potent! One ounce of pure White Star Anise (Best Grade) will make over a gallon of Anise oil that you could actually use without WAY overpowering your formula... However.....when using the oils correctly & targeting a species with a more accute sense of smell, the oils really reach out there and grab them by the nose, it suspends in the water much longer.
drift fishing or bumping in the Ohio river I have the best luck with mooneyes or skipjack for blues & channels. flatheads i like big chubs, live shad or live mooneyes, goldfish or really anything live that is legal. channels cutbait.
chicken breast is a very good bait for blue cats too! it works for me year round here in souther texas (san antonio). I get channels from time to time and yes, even flatheads on it in the springtime too! and NOT little catfish....BIG catfish! I used to think I needed to catch bait or fish to cut up to be effective, but once I tried chicken breast I never looked back. I am a guide in the san antonio area known for my ability to catch big blue cats. just wanted to let people know there is a good alternative to shad or cut bait that is readily available!
I have fished the San Marcos river. I've been stationed at fort hood for about two years and make it a priority to get down there atleast once every three months!!!
Scott Birnel hey man I just moved down here to San Antonio and im looking for any good fishing spots. I fish for cats and panfish more than anything, and any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated man. Tight lines!
Have good luck with fresh live eel as well. Vary your cut size on them. Biggest cat landed this year was on the smallest piece of bait, about the size of my pinkie.
I live on a Bluecat & Flathead full creek. Cut Shad is the best.. or cut Mullet/ Bluegill out of my pond. Stink baits, etc? Never had any luck & I've tried while catching cats with cut Shad. I'm also in SE Texas. Stay away from Stinks baits. Large Night Crawlers are great also
Do you have any suggestions for catching bait fish from the shore that I will be using as cut bait for channel or blue catfish? I present using rod&reel.
Bill, depends on when, where, time of year etc, lots of variables to that. Tons of info on my website you can check out to help you get started and will answer your questions.
For skipjack use two feather tail jigs.. Just keep them moving close to the surface of the water... For shad you either have to net them or or snag them with a treble hook.. Now bream and sunfish.. Best bait is crickets near the shore maybe 6 ft out from the bank
in my family, we swear by stink baits, chicken liver, and night crawlers for channel cats. let it sink to the bottom, keep it in free spool until they run with it, take it off of free spool and set the hook as hard as you can. most of the cats you catch this way are typical dinner sized catfish.
There are two types of fishing for cats: pole fishing and setline fishing. I fish 100% with setlines. I need something that will stay on the hook for 12 hours. I only use chicken gizzards. They are hard to put on the hook and hard to take off the hook (hook them in the hard fat of the gizzard). I catch around 30-40 every spring.
The best flathead catfish bait where I am at in ky and tenn I find is dead Creek chubb minnows and they work on all types of catfish but the best catfish bait is shid if you can catch them with a castnet
We use cut up bars of ivory soap on trot lines and catch all kinds of catfish. However I beleive the flat heads may be eating the smaller catfish before we can them off.
I live in Marinette, Wi and all I use is nightcrawlers. Every day I go out I catch 2-6 channel cats. Less mess, less smell and a decent amount of results.
How the hell you use chicken, every time I put the liver on the hook it was sliney and it would fall off. Do you free it so it stays on the hook, another my chicken liver kept getting stuck on weeds and branches n the bottom.🤦🏿♂️
I think everyone wants to say they have the perfect secret recipe. All I can say is, use what works for you. For me I get more strikes and commits using old stinky jumbo shrimp on a santee cooper rig. It's stinky, oily, and attacks all sorts of fish. I've got big Stripers, LM Bass, and with a small bit of shrimp and the right size hook it can get them big sun fish too. Might be a bit expensive for bait, but for me nothing else has worked as well as shrimp, it's always in my cooler when I go fishing. Now this is all bank fishing, and I am sure it changes when you go out in deeper waters.
Shrimp is my favorite bait, I get fresh head on shrimp from an Asian fish store, shell and cut into 3 pieces of bait from one shrimp. I freeze whatever is left for next trip and whatever of those might be left I salt to store in the fridge. I also add a little MSG to mine
Rotten chicken hearts- our catfish love a good stinkbait, Hearts always work great for me. They reek to high heaven and they stay on the hook really well plus they're really cheap. We have mostly channel cats in the Susquehanna in Pa.
Bluegill guts… Best catfish bait I have ever used. Pantyhose pouch wrapped over a large hook fastened with a small zip tie. Pop the hook through the pouch so the curved pointy part of the hook is exposed. I don’t recommend trying to use more than two poles. One will keep you busy. Have fun! 😁
My best one is cheery Kool-aid chicken and garlic salt mix it all up and let it marinate overnight. I’ve notice that channel catfish like the stinky stuff.
When I first started fishing I would buy bait like worms and liver and I caught fish but when I met a man where I fish now he tole me shad is the only way to go and I started catching STRIPES and bass and everything in the river so now I'm a firm believer in shad
Try some boneless chicken make sure you cut the chicken up to your desired bait size. Then add garlic powder and cherry Kool-Aid or strawberry Kool-Aid. Mix it all into a bag let it sit overnight in the fridge then hook it, throw it and wait
What part of Texas are you from? I grew up in/around Austin and It was a normal thing for me to catch a whole cooler of Channel Cat's anywhere from 3-12 lbs.
I've caught two cat fish and one big bluegill I've never caught a bass. Can u teach me what to use for bass fishing. I use a fake worm and a big hook with no weight.
Are you on Lake Texoma in this Video?? I grew up on Texoma every day. I'm from Whitesboro. I always have luck with Liver, Shrimp, Shad, and Ghost Minnows with Blue and mainly liver and grasshoppers on channel cats on the red river. Y'all don't do anything special for military regarding guides do y'all? I'm active duty stationed down at Fort Hood at the moment. Gonna be on Lake Texoma on Saturday. Hope to see ya out there!!!
Mind me asking what lake you were on? I know down by the Denison Dam on Lake Texoma there have been MASSIVE catfish caught down there. Upwards of over 100lbs and pictures of catfish the size of VW's!!!
Say Chad, what lakes are best to fish in the dfw area? I've been looking to do some out that way. I live just west of the metroplex and I normally fish Hubbard lake, the Brazos, and every now and then Possum Kingdom. Been wanting to try some new places tho.
Slayed the channels and blues just last night using nothing more than doughballs. Got a few carp too but there were only 4 carp compared to 64 catfish.
So for a private pond which I have been using minnows for quite awhile. But now the big blues at this ranch seem to be ignoring the minnows. Will cut bluegills be good to use with corks or no?
does water temp affect the fishing? water temp here is 46ish° are they still catchable at this temp? I just recently bought your Chad Ferguson series mh spinning rod and anxious to try it out.
How do you hook your live bait? I know some people do in front of of behind the dorsal fin others go through the lips of the fish. What's your preference?
I’m new to catfishing, but the more I examine them I think what are actually in my local lakes look more like bullheads. Will any of these baits work with those as well?
Your not wrong, I've caught a lot of blue on skip Jack. Also caught channel on skip Jack and perch. I cut the perch in half and use a circle hook. Liver is a shoe in if you can keep it on the hook. Never seen a cat not hit on liver. Been told blues and channels prefer dead bait, lazy, go for the easy find while flats like the hunt a prefer live bait. With that being said I have caught a few flats with liver, live perch and cut skip Jack.
PUNCH BAITS ALWAYS SEEM TO WORK THE BEST FOR ME(BY FAR) FOR CHANNEL CATS DURING SPRING THROUGH MID SUMMER. IT SEEMS TO REALLY DROP OFF IN THE HOT LATE SUMMER THOUGH.
So Chad, what's your opinion on hotdogs, night crawlers and liver for bait. I've had very little luck with liver and no luck at all with hot dogs and worms. Is it me, am I doing something wrong? Thanks.
No, you need to be using one of the baits outlined in the video. Most of the others are gimmicks, you might catch some fish but they're not "good baits".
Chad , when you are fishing for channel cat it sounds like you catch the same size fish I do. Have you ever used fishing shrimp. I have had great luck with this in SD . Does it make any difference what you use for bait in relation to what part of the country you live and fish in.
If you have small channel cats, you have large ones making them. This man is a guide, so I don’t want to step on his toes, but my experience is a large piece of cut bait on an 8/0 circle hook near structure will eliminate the babies and catch the big boys. Granted, your numbers tend to go down, but you’ll regularly hook up with nice size cats. Also, channel cats like to play with their food, so you need to wait till it bends your pole for two to three seconds before you do anything. It will hit your bait several times before taking the hook.
@Manny, Boiled shrimp with the legs still on them, crawdad tails, cut bait(even if you have to buy it), large green grass hoppers(don't use the stinky black ones)(hook them through the tail), maybe chicken livers in spring and early summer, and maybe a stink bait for channel cats. I know some people that use road kill for stink bait, but I don't have the stomach for it. Just don't poke your finger with a hook before you wash your hands. Or you may get some kind of awful disease.
i live around the james river & appomattox river in Va...known for monster blues..Guy i know/met at one of the spots i fish caught his PB 90 pound blue cat on cut white perch
ohh thats ok because by watching your video n using them in real life i have catch my first 3 foot,2 inch catfish and its the illusive goonch that exist in our parts in india but whatever species it is the main thing is that your advice from your video work and also thanks for your advice catfish edge i'm really grateful for your help
Put some spam, some cherry cool aid, and some old freezer burned fish in a blender. Make a paste and spread a generous amount on a 4x6 inch piece of white cloth. An old sheet or t-shirt works. Roll up the cloth so it is 6 inches long. Tie it on one end with string or twine. Hook it once through the tied end. That is it. Use like a jerk bait or plastic worm. You might have to rig it Georgia style with some lead. If you have some fresh fish with a head and guts, add that to the blender, too. This last part is very important. Throw it all away and don't be so gullible next time
I use boneless chicken with cherry koolaid and a cat fish spray from Walmart I have been on many lakes and would be catching fish after fish and others on lake couldn't even get a bite trust me it works really good and you will only be able to use one pole me and my daughter caught 157 that was our best day i will never forget it

That’s a real good idea for chicken tiddies
Where do you buy the sardines? Walmart and dies this work for all cat fish.

Shrimp is my favorite bait, I get fresh head on shrimp from an Asian fish store, shell and cut into 3 pieces of bait from one shrimp. I freeze whatever is left for next trip and whatever of those might be left I salt to store in the fridge. I also add a little MSG to mine
in the state of oregon we are only allowed to use night crawlers has live bait and sand shimps get caught using a bluegill and its a big fine
Rotten chicken hearts- our catfish love a good stinkbait, Hearts always work great for me. They reek to high heaven and they stay on the hook really well plus they're really cheap. We have mostly channel cats in the Susquehanna in Pa.
Chicken liver here soaked in blood, and u will hit catfish from sun up to sundown
Uggh
Bluegill guts… Best catfish bait I have ever used. Pantyhose pouch wrapped over a large hook fastened with a small zip tie. Pop the hook through the pouch so the curved pointy part of the hook is exposed. I don’t recommend trying to use more than two poles. One will keep you busy. Have fun! 😁
Good information
My best one is cheery Kool-aid chicken and garlic salt mix it all up and let it marinate overnight. I’ve notice that channel catfish like the stinky stuff.
Spot-!!-ON, Brother!!🙏🦂🐗🦅😎⬆️
Truth man, great video!
Thanks
When I first started fishing I would buy bait like worms and liver and I caught fish but when I met a man where I fish now he tole me shad is the only way to go and I started catching STRIPES and bass and everything in the river so now I'm a firm believer in shad
I usually use chicken breast with cherry cool aid , leaches and night crawlers , hot dogs , or live bait depending whaf they hitting
Thanks
What do you think about gold fish?
Try some boneless chicken make sure you cut the chicken up to your desired bait size. Then add garlic powder and cherry Kool-Aid or strawberry Kool-Aid. Mix it all into a bag let it sit overnight in the fridge then hook it, throw it and wait
when you use chum do you put it in a sock or container or just dump it in the water.
Just dump
What part of Texas are you from? I grew up in/around Austin and It was a normal thing for me to catch a whole cooler of Channel Cat's anywhere from 3-12 lbs.
Fort Worth
I've caught two cat fish and one big bluegill I've never caught a bass. Can u teach me what to use for bass fishing. I use a fake worm and a big hook with no weight.
Sorry I'm not a ditch pickle fisherman :)
Watch Tactical Bassin for all your bass fishing needs
Are you on Lake Texoma in this Video?? I grew up on Texoma every day. I'm from Whitesboro. I always have luck with Liver, Shrimp, Shad, and Ghost Minnows with Blue and mainly liver and grasshoppers on channel cats on the red river. Y'all don't do anything special for military regarding guides do y'all? I'm active duty stationed down at Fort Hood at the moment. Gonna be on Lake Texoma on Saturday. Hope to see ya out there!!!
+John Acker no sir
Mind me asking what lake you were on? I know down by the Denison Dam on Lake Texoma there have been MASSIVE catfish caught down there. Upwards of over 100lbs and pictures of catfish the size of VW's!!!
Say Chad, what lakes are best to fish in the dfw area? I've been looking to do some out that way. I live just west of the metroplex and I normally fish Hubbard lake, the Brazos, and every now and then Possum Kingdom. Been wanting to try some new places tho.
Just about all of the lakes in DFW have good catfish populations.
All of em
Slayed the channels and blues just last night using nothing more than doughballs. Got a few carp too but there were only 4 carp compared to 64 catfish.
Taurus .357 Magnum yoooo that’s a lot of cats 😂!
awesome!
So for a private pond which I have been using minnows for quite awhile. But now the big blues at this ranch seem to be ignoring the minnows. Will cut bluegills be good to use with corks or no?
Possible, ponds often require some experimentation. Have you tried a punch bait like CJ's or Danny King's?
No sure haven't. But i know natural bait works well though
I've caught yellows with shrimp from heb
LOL, that's awesome! If they're hungry they'll eat!
@@Catfishedge 6 hours with My son no fish just turtles
does water temp affect the fishing? water temp here is 46ish° are they still catchable at this temp? I just recently bought your Chad Ferguson series mh spinning rod and anxious to try it out.
Absolutely
I like using commercial stinkbaits chickin livers and hot dogs for channels bullheads and blues.
Great option for channel catfish!
I use beef liver it's a lot harder for the fish to get off then useing chicken liver it's also alot more bloodyer so leaves a great sent trail
How do you hook your live bait? I know some people do in front of of behind the dorsal fin others go through the lips of the fish. What's your preference?
Through the back or the nose. For me it just depends on type of bait, size etc.
I use Creek Chub & Bluegill 👍👍
Thanks!
Blue gill like worms I usually catch blue gill and cat fish on some night crawlers
I’m new to catfishing, but the more I examine them I think what are actually in my local lakes look more like bullheads. Will any of these baits work with those as well?
Chicken liver or worms
Surprised you didn’t mention chicken liver. Probably one of the most productive catfish baits I’ve ever used.
I never use it. One of the most overrated baits ever!
Thanks 👍
PUNCH BAITS ALWAYS SEEM TO WORK THE BEST FOR ME(BY FAR) FOR CHANNEL CATS DURING SPRING THROUGH MID SUMMER. IT SEEMS TO REALLY DROP OFF IN THE HOT LATE SUMMER THOUGH.
Bread is mine I caught a 57.09
Nice!
What kind of shad for Blues? Mud/Gizzard ?
No difference, fish are fish. I use shrimp on occasion. It's a good bait for drift fishing for channel catfish.
Chicken liver, SPAM (stuff posing as meat) Ivory soap, I have no clue why they like it, neither do the scientist but they do.
Thanks 👍
In California we can't use live bait for fishing, the fines are steep. What bait do you recommend instead? Thanks.
@Manny,
Boiled shrimp with the legs still on them, crawdad tails, cut bait(even if you have to buy it), large green grass hoppers(don't use the stinky black ones)(hook them through the tail), maybe chicken livers in spring and early summer, and maybe a stink bait for channel cats. I know some people that use road kill for stink bait, but I don't have the stomach for it. Just don't poke your finger with a hook before you wash your hands. Or you may get some kind of awful disease.
Relocate in a free state. Texas, Missouri ect.
You can definitely use XXL shiners for live bait in ca I do it all the time the bait shop doesn’t sell and recommend them for no reason
What do you use for yellow-belly catfish?
Fresh raw shrimp hands down maybe tag it with some black licorice spray never failed me yet
Thanks!
Catfish edge, have you used Pautzkes catfish nectar?
No sorry
Good video.
Thanks
i live around the james river & appomattox river in Va...known for monster blues..Guy i know/met at one of the spots i fish caught his PB 90 pound blue cat on cut white perch

what is the best baits for the goonch catfish.
No idea we don’t have them in the United States
what about the voondo catfish
@@johnnyblack3801 Nope! Blues, channels and flatheads!

crawdad is good too
Sometimes but we catch too many drum on them
Is there any good size catfish in lake conroe?
Hell yeah my dude. My hb lives in Spring Tx so we normally fish Conroe.. my buddy 52lb flat on a live goldfish
Yes. Certainly not one of the top lakes but worth fishing.
I go for bullheads what's a good bait for that ?
No idea. I don’t know if anyone that tries to catch them on purpose
Up here in Virginia number one catfishing bait is chicken livers, we don't like to kill the Perch and live fish just to catch a smelly old cat.
i caught my pb channel cat on skip jack 10 or 11 lbs
Awesome!
Throw it all away and don't be so gullible next time
LOL, best comment in a LONG time.
I just use bluegill it free and work great
I use flour and river water the best...Hudson River
Thanks 👍
