Then the cop has the audacity to say "hey, if you expose us for unlawful detainment and search and seizure, we know who you are!"

(Paraphrased) what he meant was, "hey, if any of you have a problem with us violating your rights, unlawful arrest, search and seizure without a warrant, infractions on your first amendment rights, and expose us, we know who you are, where you live, and we will not take kindly to you."

You didn't see that some attempted to obscure their license plate. Yes if you bend the plate up or block it in some manner it is a violation.
