Arrive early to avoid the line. I would rather have got there early and waited inside the base than wait in the traffic. Plus you will be first to leave with your soldier for the day. The line gets real bad on family day and is a little quicker the next day for graft. Ours was on a Tuesday and Wednesday. Might not be as bad on the weekend though

Yes for about 5-6 hours
Did you have to get a visitors pass? Or could you just show your state ID at the gate?
