    In a miniatur painting video, someone said that yellow acrylic paint is very transparent. Even on white he needed some layers until the yellow really showed.

      I can believe that. Yellow is the worst.

      Some red acrylics also. A quick test is to draw lines on thick stock using a soft pencil then run your intended colours over the lines

    Hi Kathy, these are four amazing looking lava scenery pieces!😍 Um, there are (accidentally) some dark spots in the lava ponds or some glowing spots on the cooled down areas? That's what you can see on real lava, so I'm totally fine with those happy accidents.🤩
    Well, white LEDs can be quite difficult to work with, especially when you want them to shine in a different colour! I built a white and red light bar for an American H0 ambulance back in 2003. At that time there were no warm white LEDs, only cool white ones. I divided each side of the light bar into a white and a red half with the corresponding LEDs, powered by an alternating flasher on each side. When the red LED was on, the whole side glowed red. But if the white one was on, only the white half would light up, the red half would remain completely dark! So: a cool white LED behind red doesn't work at all.🙄 But behind yellow, a cool white works perfectly, resulting in a wonderfully bright yellow.😯 Cool white also doesn't work very well behind green, not even behind blue - although a white LED is essentially a blue LED in a translucent yellow housing.👨🏻‍🏫🤓 With your yellow lava diorama, the pond should also have glowed yellow. The fact that it still glowed more white is due to the LEDs shining too brightly. These LED strips are always operated at their maximum values, which is why they usually get quite warm (which finally also dissolves the adhesive on the strips). By the way, instead of using the transparent foil, you could have painted the LEDs with transparent paint, preferably with an airbrush, because colors generally don't stick well to LEDs. (And if need be: a bath of acetone will remove any kind of colour and dirt from LEDs, even superglue, without damaging the LEDs!😁) Modern white daylight LEDs can be put behind red, but they're never really ideal in this case - this is my personal opinion...😉😇
    I'm now looking forward to your next lava project with RGB LEDs I'm pretty sure it will be great!🤩
    Cheers (and sorry for this long, detailed "novel"🙇🏻‍♂️) - Ralf🖖🏻🍀👋🏻

    Great video Kathy I was thinking to myself use filters to change the colour of the under light, and low and behold you did. Awesome effects.

    Hi Kathy, the effects are brilliant,I have another idea, back in the days before everyone had central heating, my Mum and Dad, having got rid of the coal fire (it kept setting the chimney on fire, different story, not important), got an a "three bar electric fire with real coal effect",(state of the art-1970), how this worked was under the plastic fake fire was 2 red light bulbs with an aluminium spinner above each one and this created a flickery effect, and I wonder could something like this enhance the effect, what do you think?, I'm not even sure if they still make these things any more, anyway as always, thanks for sharing, take care, all the best from Scotland, Stephen.

    • @KathyMillatt
      @KathyMillatt  ปีที่แล้ว

      We had one of those! I’m sure you could make it work but thankfully, LED lights are simpler than relying on heat from the bulbs to rotate the disc.

    Great stuff Kathy. I often use sweet wrappers to cover smaller lights with colour, especially internal lighting on vehicles (great for engines). Going to try and do some lava on my dragonslayer kit.

    Hey model makers I'm looking for a decent airbrush / kit - any recommendations?
    Are the new electric things worth a shot or go with a traditional compressor? Buy the airbrush separate or buy in a kit?
    It's for 3D prints of various sizes, looking for something that'll last rather than a 'one and done' cheap kit
    Looking to you, the community that knows, as I've zero trust in amazon reviews these days and amazon seems to recommend the cheap tat that breaks for some reason 🤔
    Thanks in advance if you read this👍

      Hi. I can only tell you what I use which is an Iwata Eclipse CS with an Iwata compressor. I’ve been very happy with it. My biggest improvement came when I started spraying lacquers. You need proper extraction and masks but my nozzle never clogs now.

    Cellophane to the rescue! It also makes an interesting terrain texture with a blowtorch, but why bother with that when you can 3D print Lava ?!? Your lava tiles might make an awesome Shatterpoint board too!

    the joys of painting eh, full of happy and bloomin' annoying accidents!!
    Layer lines are a sod for wicking paint, for me it's always been whilst painting eyes on projects and like your lava, it's the washes towards the end and layer lines in tight detail gaps.
    Thanks for including your mistakes, good for others to see👍👍

    • @KathyMillatt
      @KathyMillatt  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I feel like the mistakes are more informative than the final result! I’ve had similar problems with layer lines on the surface but the hidden ones are normally not seen.
