    I don't write with woodwinds very often but your first piece has made me want the studio woodwinds

      You should!
      You don't know how much people are missing when not writing for WWs. They absolutely add colors to your orchestration in a level you can't imagine.

      You can't just not write for winds they play an important part in the orchestra. even if you sometimes can't hear them over strings and brass they play an extremely important part in the orchestra

      Luke Davies you can lol, some people have their own unique style in which WW is not a big part, and that is completely fine.

    Totally agree with adding onto sample libraries with real playing. I find it sweetens the playing that much more especially with string libraries.

    When people say "what happened? I prefered the previous version" it's usually a case of demo-itis, as Rick Beato would say. Listening to demos a million times over and getting so accustomed to the subtleties that even the slightest change sounds too drastic.

      @@markdavenport2613 Very true! Even happened to me recently, when I was using a sampled pizz double bass and then recorded it- I forgot about the finger noises etc it can generate.. the (live) sound is so beautiful, yet so different to a sampled one. Both beautiful in their own way though! O

    Hey Oliver. As usual, you've created two great songs. What reverb(s) are you using when mixing/mastering the songs? They sound so well blended together, especially the second piece. If you get the chance to answer this, it would be much appreciated. I have enjoyed learning from you in all your videos. Take care.

    In some cases I think Samples work better then Players, only because there was invested so much Time in nailing the Sound of the Samples and you can't recreate such a good sound every Time, Spot on Like the Producers of the SampleInstrument did. That is maybe also why in the Ear of the Client or Director the Samples stand out.

    What I do to get that "realistic" sound is to do my usual main parts with libraries like the Albion's but then assign the voices to instruments within Studio series; often budgets (for me at least) don't allow to record a large ensemble (or any) and being able to mimic those chamber recordings with the samples as I would for an actual recording has created some incredibly detailed expressive results. As well as changing the amount of players within a section has also aided to that expressive sound! Secret weapon! That and layering in some of ALT Solo strings for that extra level of detail and expressiveness.

    Never knew you had support to help you decide what is best for a certain scenario. I checked your website many times but I guess I missed this. Since your libraries are a little hard to accommodate with, that's indeed needed.

    How did you get you Korg Nano Control to work with logic and your Libraries?
    I just brought one, but can't it get to work with either.

    • @OliverPatriceWeder
      @OliverPatriceWeder 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I think the trick is not to download the driver - you also want to delete it from the 'control surface' in Logic, as you don't want to use it to control your tracks, but your midi.
      If your controller works as a surface control (meaning if you can hit pause/play/stop/ solo tracks / etc.) then the set up is wrong. This is what happened to me in the beginning.
      You want to download the Nano Kontrol 2 EDITOR and not the driver. hope this helps, O

    Very nice video, very informative!
    The thing I want to know, is how do you get the notes in your DAW? Do you write the score in another program (like finale or sibelius) export the midi, import to your DAW and then record the automation for the dynamics, vibrato etc? Or do you actually play them in your DAW directly and record them? Or is there another method I'm unaware of?

    • @OliverPatriceWeder
      @OliverPatriceWeder 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Agiyi - thanks for the nice words! I am playing each instrument via my midi keyboard and controller. If anything it would be the other way round for my workflow, I would export the midi form my DAW and then import into Sibelius or Finale, to then write the score and put it in front of a player. Best, O

    • @Agiyi
      @Agiyi 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OliverPatriceWeder thank you so much for the reply Oliver!
      Do you think i can achieve good results going the other way around? I study music composition so i am more used to writing the score and i can glance over the score and understand the music better than seeing the midi bars (starting to get used to it too thought!). Could i get similar results soundwise? Because your examples that you showed us sound really fantastic! I got the studio orchestra just some days ago and saw that the dynamics and vibrato can be controlled with the faders of my midi keyboard, so i could record the automation later with similar results, right? Or do you recommend that i play the notes from scratch in my DAW for better results?
      Again, thank you so much for all your videos, I'm just starting with samples and your videos are really helpful!

    • @jeremiemartineau2595
      @jeremiemartineau2595 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Uploading a midi file you created on finale/Sibelius into your DAW is just like playing it, you do what you find easiest. The only thing I have noticed is that you sometimes need to change note lengths a little in the DAW depending on the library you're using. Once your notes are in, you can either record or draw your automation. This is the way I have worked for a long time, now I do as Oliver does because it helps me practice my piano, but it's a slower process than what I used to do, especially since I like having scores of everything I write. If you don't really mind about the score, than maybe writing directly into your DAW will be a better process. Hope this helps!

    It might sound stupid, but I find that if I slightly blend a layer of string chords of the old Roland samples for example, with a library of these days it adds "something" (I can't exactly describe what). I don't get that if I add a layer with another modern library.

    • @OliverPatriceWeder
      @OliverPatriceWeder 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not stupid at all Kevin - there are no rules, that's the beauty of music, you can do whatever you like. I am sure you get a very unique, cool sound by doing your technique!! Would love to hear it. Oliver
