Wife and I read all the books, not perfect but loved them overall. We were foolish enough to actually be excited and cautiously optimistic when we found out it would finally be put on screen...
I can't even put into words the disappointment and genuine disgust we experienced watching this absolute abomination that is season 1 of this show. Blood and bloody ashes it was bad.

That is how I feel. I have read the books since I was a kid in the 90s and I have loved them and reread some of the books many times. I was so hopeful we would get something following GoT's early seasons framework. Instead we got something much worse that shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath as GoT. Sadly for all of us long time fans this was our chance to see the series come to life on the screen and they picked the worst possible show runner.

This is what happens, when you put a certain type of modern woman... or gay man... in charge of running an SF or fantasy show.
The first are feminists, many of whom do NOT like men... and the second tend to be rather effeminate.
Neither of the two understand masculine men (or feminine women), because they AREN'T either of those...
THIS is the reason that the female characters get turned into Mary Sues, while the main characters get "The Last Jedi" treatment... or fat-Thor, etc.
In the case of Amazon's Wheel of Time, we've got an "adaptation" (hate-fiction) produced by a studio run by what appears to be a feminist, and the show itself run by a gay man who self-identifies as a feminist.

What's so backwards is these people thinking this stuff is empowering and feministic.
I don't look smart when I outwit a child, I look smart when I'm holding my own with another smart person. The women in the books were powerful because we had perspective of other powerful people to compare them to, and as a team, men and women did even more powerful things.

Masculinity gets all the prestige, because films aimed at male audiences define the popular culture. However, men are bad, and they don't deserve the prestige. I had to take a break for the summer, but I didn't bother with the show mostly because I didn't want to have anything influence how I was picturing the lands and characters in my mind. The books had so many plots and subplots to draw from and they waste a whole season on a ridiculous "who's the dragon" mystery box. All to pretend like the dragon could be male or FEMALE. The women in this world in all the lands _ Two rivers with the women circle, camelyn with the Queen and matriarch, Aiel who went toe to toe with the men not just the sisters of the spear (in the book Rand tried cuddling them til they had ENOUGH and were ready to break their spears on his fool head 😄) then seafolk, seanchan had their empress and daughter of the nine moons, the Amryrilin seat and Aes sedai. The book was packed with so many power dynamics & enough "girl bosses" with legitimate power! Even the chosen/forsaken had some really evil powerful women and they still downplay the dragon & Rand's power.
You're points about Rand standing out was on point. He stood out so much in the books that I wondered why he never questioned his Dad about it and was in such denial when his dad let it slip (quite a traumatic way of finding out).
So many dumbass changes shows they do not understand or appreciate the source material. Just latched unto a beloved story with a built-in fanbase, the same as rings of power & witcher...

I don't remember if the Seanchan Empress was Black... but one of her daughters (a "certain" one) most definitely was.
And yes, much of the rest of the casting is just awful... which is entirely on the people who did the casting, not a critique of the actors or actresses themselves.

In the real world you're not going to have diversity outside of major metropolitan areas in first world countries. Go to small towns or third world countries and you'll find most of the people looking the same because nobody wants to move there and the people inhabiting the town have lived there for generations and have homogenized. This is why in fantasy stories with low technology levels have uniform skin tones, because that's what happens in real life when its not easy to move more than one town over.

I'll split my comments into two.
For this one, you read "saga of the forgotten warrior" by Larry Correia? I've loved it so far and part of what I liked is how book one is character intros and world building. Book two on seems to be the quest & adventure proper.
It's definitely a series that would be amazing to adapt but I dread such a thing because you know they'll somehow miss the point.

16:00 Asmodean was the name you were trying to recall Greg and yes Lanfear did Rope him to teach Rand but not too much. I'm currently finishing the 14th book of the series so on the whole they are still fresh. I have the actual book series and read them several times but I didn't feel like an actual read through this time. It's good entertainment while walking 15 miles to deliver mail.

Moiraine and Siuan were Pillow Friends in the books. It was just comfort during the hardships of the White Tower training. According to Robert Jordan: "Well, you put fifteen-year-old girls in a tower filled with almost entirely women, with their hormones raging on overdrive, keep them away from men, because you can’t afford to lose any of them, and what do you think is going to happen?" If this show continues, it makes me wonder... how will this impact her relationship with Thom Merrilin?

No lie, I canceled my Amazon Prime subscription after somehow getting through episode 3. Yes, I had been considering it beforehand, but that was the last straw. I read TEotW back in in 1990, then took it and "The Great Hunt" with me to Desert Shield/Storm, so I've been a WOT fan for ages ... and man was I disgusted/enraged with Amazon's "Waste of Time." So this show can just die in a fire.
And you're referring to Asmodean, Greg, who showed up in book 4, "The Shadow Rising" as Rand's teacher.
I will contest the comment about the Seanchan and race; Tuon is very much described as black, which implies Hawkwing's son intermarried with locals since Tuon is the Empress' daughter...

As a lark, I scrolled through all the streamers recent sci-fi and fantasy properties to see who the main characters was or who was the protagonist. It is like 90% female. No lie. Sci fi and fantasy mainly appeals to young boys and guys, and everyone of these shows now have hijacked existing shows to make them all female or only adapt fantasy with a female protagonist. And of those, like Wheel of Time, they actually make them more girl power so the guys literally do nothing and it is all the women who actually do anything, or the guy can only be a villain. Even Marvel's new Avengers are like 80% female. People try to gaslight you saying why u mad bro? when you point any of this out, but it is ridiculously and obviously intentional that they are trying to feminize these genres and take away things boys would like.
They all fail because boys do not identify with female leads and girls do not like sci fi and fantasy. They just don't, but these woke companies do not care. And no, the three women on the Mary Sue does not refute this statement.

Rand was always an interesting character, he's mental fragility combined with the power of destroy a world with seems to love mess with him alwas makes it a pretty interesting character. Matrim Cauthon, I didn't like it very much through the first half of the novel's (too whine) but everything changed since a little before Ebu Dar, because despite the pretty f-boy title all women gives him, he became and unleashed certified bad azz. Perrin was my favorite but I started to prefer Mat when he separates from his wife Faile Bashere. I would like to add, Rand's harem is the Japanese definition of harem when the MC has no voice of vote and were the women wich decides who's in the harem 😂😂.

I've read the first three books of The Wheel of Time, and I was devasted by how they handled the characters in this series. Perrin's story in particular really, really rubbed me the wrong way. To give him a tragic backstory was, as you pointed out, entirely out of keeping with how Jordan presents this characters in the book. He makes such a point (almost ad nauseum) of saying that the four of them are just simple, naive village kids. Ninaeve is frustrating enough in the books; she is insufferable in the series. I did like Lan, and I liked his chemistry with Rosamund Pike. I thought they were believable as people who knew the ins and outs of each other to the point that they could function like a well-oiled machine, especially in their first fight scene. I stopped watching after the episode where Lan's Warder friend (I can't remember his name) died. I thought they did a great job of casting the main characters; they all had the potential to be wonderful in the roles, but the horrendous script and bad direction caused them to consistently fall short of their book counterparts.

"The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. But this is not a story about any of those legends. In one Age, called the First Age by some, an Age yet to come, an Age long past, a wind rose from the anus of a dog. It wafted across the grave where the body of a legendary author rolled over restlessly as the wind passed. It floated into the window of a great corporation, where a man named Rafe inhaled that wind and was inspired to write the mess you just watched. The wind was not the beginning, because no one who is not already high on the wind from a dog's anus would ever consider this the beginning of anything worthwhile. But it was a beginning."

Where to begin on this travesty. The Two Rivers at the beginning of the story is not some multi-cultural destination. Now it does begin to become one in later books, as numerous wars begin breaking out in the known world, and refuges start streaming in, looking for a place of sanctuary. Moving on, aging up the characters present a significant problem. I'm not going to focus on the innocence lost, but more on the society these five are living in. The Two Rivers district is an agrarian society. As children become adults, they are expected to couple up and begin raising the next generation. Yet, even though all the characters are aged up, only Perrin is presented with a wife (although this is a very bad decision). Both Mat and Rand should also have been married by this time, either expecting their first born or already have one. Egwene should have been recognized as a woman for multiple years, and likely would have had a husband as well (whether that was Rand or not, makes no difference). Yet, even though the show has aged up each of the characters, they are still treated as though they are considered children, or at the very least young adults. Why?
And then you have the sex. Throughout the books, Mat is shown as being the least inhibited one when it comes to sex, he is willing to bed as many women as are willing. For the remaining characters, the thought of sex outside of marriage is almost prohibited, especially for Nynaeve. Rand even floated the idea that he and Aviendha had to get married after they had sex. Yet the show has Rand and Egwene banging every other scene it seems like, and Nynaeve has no issue dropping her dress on Lan's floor.
I could go on and on about the changes from the source material, and how the writers have just abandoned any pretense of staying true to book lore, but it doesn't matter anymore. After season 2, the show is just making it up as they go. The show cannot even remain internally consistent on their own writing. We'll have some piece of lore dropped in one episode, only for them to completely ignore it the next. And we have Rafe Judkins significantly altering the story so Rosamund Pike's Moiraine gets more screen time. Now I'm not clear if this something Rafe wanted, or if Rosamund requested, but both claim to be fans of the books, so they both knew going into this that Moiraine is mostly absent for book 2, and completely gone between the end of book 5 and the end of book 12. Based on this, should the show make it the planned 8 seasons, we will never see the redstone doorway ter'angreal, nor the Tower of Ghenjei. Moiraine will be the main character of the show throughout each season, with Egwene being the primary secondary character. Rand, Mat, and Perrin, well they'll continue just being side characters in their own story.

Agree with almost everything you said. You forgot how stupid the blight and the eye was. The blight was one of the coolest areas in the books and in the show was just random thickets. Devoting almost an entire episode to Maksim was utterly ludicrous. The women at Tarwin's Gap is almost show killing. The entire point of the books is that Rand is such a powerful channeler that he can stand against a good. But the show has like 4 untrained non Aes-Sedai kill 10,000 trollocs.
Elyas was cast for the show. I think Season 2 looks like it will be closer to the books but one of the WoT bloggers said it's even farther away than Book 1.
