Then by the 2000s they were hiring models instead of trained actors and actresses. That was what ruined the show.
I read that when AMC decided to bring back Opal in 1990, the EP at the time (Felicia Minei- Behr) never even approached Lyman about returning. Lyman stated that shr was hurt by their decisions
I liked the Opal/Sam relationship, but AMC wrecked it (and him) by having him fall in love with her daughter Jenny. Ick! As I recall, Opal called him a pervert when she found out. AMC should have skipped that story and let Opal and Sam leave town together when Dorothy Lyman left the show a few months later. Except for his flirtations with Nina and Liza, Sam didn't have much to do after Opal left town anyway. I think he just stopped appearing on the show with no explanation sometime in 1984.
I never knew they went that route that Sam loved Jenny! It worked so much better with him as a surrogate father/older brother. I like your idea of Opal and Sam leaving town together.
Opal was cheating on Sam by having an affair with "The Professor", a real odd couple, for money reasons off course, and when Sam eventually forgave Opal, he fell in love with Opal's young daughter, Jennie.

As Hound Dog Taylor would say, give me back my wig. Damn do I want to go back to opal 's glamorama where no normal hairdo was safe and most anything could happen. I had previously seen Dorothy Lyman playing the boring Yuppie Gwen on another world, and then she showed up on All My Children and revolutionized the world as opal, probably the greatest character in all of soap opera history. Thanks for this clip because the stuff from that era is so hard to find.
As Gwen Frame on Another World she was a practical intelligent woman ( i think) not given to raising her voice. I liked Dorothy Lyman as she has that something about her ,as you know, that draws one to her. I hated to see her leave the show. And then she shows up on AMC as Opal Gardner, that bigger than life good time gal I was floored.Completely different than Gwen and I could see her talent and range, She is the real deal. Then over to Mama's Family where she really stepped it up( geez the high pitch she can reach!) but where another may have gone too far,DL kept Naomi a person not a cartoon. She went back for a few days on AW as Gwen who returned a bit crazed and a lot pissed off. Worked out though. # cheers for the real deal, Actor/Director Dorothy Lyman!
It sure was. If Opal and Jenny had been anything alike, Sam's attraction to Jenny might have made some sense. But AMC apparently wanted to tell stories about a guy being involved with a mother and daughter because the Tad/Liza/Marian story began soon after. After what happened with Sam, maybe it made sense for Opal to run off with rich guy Ralph Purdy, but she barely knew him, and it wasn't a very interesting way to end Dorothy Lyman's run on the show. At least AMC waited a long time to recast.

And who was the sleazy man who was like a pimp Billy I think (I have NOT watched the show since the 70's as a teen lol) God I loved this show and RIP Mary Fickett aka Ruth Martin. I sure wish we could get these old 70's AMC on dvds or something!!! That would be a blast from the past!!
I like Dorothy Lyman alot...I only knew her as Naomi on Mama's Family....and I knew she played the original Opal...but I was into AMC when Jill Larson took the role.....but I do thank you for having a classic clip of Lyman playing the part
