Thank you for the video. You said that single predestination is demonic, I want to ask, what is the language of election and predestination in the new testament about?
@@living_orthodox I agree that the Calvinist understanding of election and predestination is unhealthy, and can be destructive. I find it interesting that so many deconstructing Christians tend to come from that theological persuasion. I'm not quite sure what you mean with this reply. Certainly the Scriptures teach them both. If Christ is the "new" Israel, then would it be correct to say all who believe in him are the "elect"? And they were "predestined" in the sense that God knew beforehand who would believe? I'm sure Orthodoxy would add that "believing" entails participating in life of the Church with its worship, sacraments, etc .
Protestant here, looking into Orthodoxy. The main thing I am really having trouble with concerning Orthodox soteriology is that there doesn’t seem to be any place for any kind of forensic component to justification or justification by faith. It seems like these ideas are rejected outright, if not minimized as much as possible. But this is obviously a prominent theme in Paul, and can be found in the fathers. Is there an Orthodox understanding of forensic justification / justification by faith that I’m just missing? I’m not necessarily talking about Sola Fide, nor do I mean that salvation must be ONLY forensic. I’m not saying you personally are doing what I’ve described above, I’m just searching desperately for answers. This is the primary thing giving me pause about converting. I’m wondering if I’ve just not found the right sources or am misunderstanding something.
Good question brother. What exactly do you mean by "forensic justification," and can you share some scriptures and quotes from the Fathers that you think support it?
Father, Wonderful Skufia but complements aside very nice teaching. I love your videos honestly, but have you considered taking up a role such as Fr Dcn Ananias?

@ryandunwell7139 well james 2 21 24 You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone. We don't do good works to get saved but we do them out of love and respect for what Jesus did for us and because we are saved Faith Without Works Is Dead 14 What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? 17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead God helped me with a lot of things and freed me from many habitual sins like smoking cigs and many other because I also tried to repent without repentance we are living in sin also The Narrow and Wide Gates 13 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.
What I've really gotten tired of is a Protestant/Evangelical/"Oprah-lite" approach to teaching and Scriptures: "Just love. The rest is doctrine." They do well to point to the Scriptures where Jesus told us to love God with all our being and our neighbor as ourselves. But they make a fatal mistake when they say "There's no place for doctrine." People who say completely ignore the fact that loving God means obeying Him, and the Bible always talks about making sure our lives and doctrine match what the Word says. Not all Protestants do this, but I have certainly seen it. It is very sad. Many people choose to ignore what the Bible says. May we all be wise in this.
If you’re complaining about theologicaly liberal Protestants then I agree. I would encourage to look more at confessional Protestants. Protestants that hold to the reformers confessions (Augsburg confession, scots confession etc). None of the reformers simply thought put your faith in Christ and you can do what you want and your saved. At least in Lutheranism which I am sanctification is highly emphasized. LCMS churches, WELS churches are better examples to look at.
Thank you Father. My friend is a protestant and sometimes he tries to debate with me and i try to avoid that as much as i can but when we do debate i get annoyed and almost mad, any suggestions to avoid get mad and annoyed Father Mikhail?
I have lost many friends and even some family due to my beliefs. However, over time I have learned to treat it as a practice in patience. The more people push me, the more I remain silent. I don't see the point in arguing with those who don't know the whole truth. It won't benefit them to go back and forth, and it may even lead them to say something that will hold them more accountable. I'm not a priest, but having a better understanding of things and modern-day church history, I feel sorry for them. I also felt sorry for myself when I realized I was lied to my whole life. However, I managed to live off the crumbs of truth for most of my life. Now, I have much to celebrate and learn. I believe that actions speak louder than words. Trying to win people over with your knowledge can fill your mind with pride and make you stumble and fall. So, I try to win them over with my actions instead.

Also is it wrong if the spiritual father I can get is not very strict but more on the lenient side which I really fell leniency will help me not strictness or atlest too much strictness. Again many thanks
The key in all things with the faith is to understand the ideal and work towards it. As a rector and a ROCOR priest, we’ve always been taught that there needs to be a gradual ease into things. St. Arsenios the Cappadocian had a gift for increasing the obedience and piety of his people by his example, and by the fact that he was strict with himself and gentle towards others when it was necessary. This is what I tell my people. To start, work on observing the Wednesday and Friday fast. Prior to receiving communion, be sure to attend vigil on Saturdays, and to abstain from games and movies the evening before liturgy and the day of. Try to set aside time to listen to, or read something spiritual.
@@living_orthodoxthanks for the answer and time father really appreciate it thats a lot more manageable and applicable but also another question the spiritual father I can get in the nearby village in Greece BTW the father there is on the more lenient side which I think leniency will help me not strictness but father Heers called father Savvas agioreitis who I believe is very strict and father Savvas said that those who are lenient spiritual fathers aren't good so I'm very confused and troubled and also atleast some people who like father Peter and father Savvas where very mean to me for saying that I'm distrusting of them and not thinking they can help me and it was a bad experience for me to not be accepted in the Truth and love of Christ througj other Christians. But that is all I can do at the moment any tips Will be greatly appreciated thanks alot
@@arandomdreamer9853 a spiritual father who is too lenient can often hamper progress. For example, my first spiritual father, Fr Vladimir for the first two years of my Orthodox life, gradually increased my fasting and prayer rule. One who is too strict can be like a piece of wood. If the wood cannot bend under the force of the wind, it becomes brittle and snaps. If it’s too soft, it doesn’t hold up and can’t resist even the most mild pressure. A spiritual father must be like a well treated timber. Flexible enough to not break under force, nor so soft that time and light pressure causes him to fold or to be unable to hold weight. A proper strict spiritual will not compromise on matters of truth or faith. He will however, gradually increase your rule of fasting and prayer. If there is no progress after a year or two, even in something minor, that can be a hinderance. But if he is so strict that consistency becomes impossible or one is incapable of living in the world with a sense of moderation and discipline, then something has gone off. As Elder Ephraim said “watchfulness purifies the heart and mind, but when coupled with even a little asceticism it yields much more fruit.” Whatever you fast or abstain from, start by doing it with prayer. Don’t worry about the video games and entertainment for now. Just be moderate to start. Don’t watch or play games the night before liturgy and after. Treat it like food. If we abstain from food the night before, we should do the same with entertainment. I would recommend reading the life of St John Maximovich. Stick with who you have for now. Once you’ve been working on yourself for a while, ask him to increase your fasting and prayer rule. Give him time and see what he might be able to do.
@@living_orthodoxI think I kind of understand you need both strictness and leniency whit such matters even though I personally haven't improved in like six years and I wonder if I do something wrong myself so the best spiritual father wouldn't magically make me better or it's because my spiritual vessel can only hold so much effort like not every athlete has the same potential energy etc. Many thanks again for not hurting me with words but being understanding because I felt really awful due to my weakness mistakes whatever it's called don't know sorry and giving me a applicable example that I can at least try it without destroying myself again many thanks God bless

In Protestantism a person living in the jungle that never meet a Christian or believed in Jesus is basically going to hell. I wonder what the orthodox would say about this situation?
@@andyscheurer6336 I think one dimensional thinking like this is exactly what’s wrong with Protestantism and most modern ideas of Christianity. It certainly denies God’s mercy, but claiming that someone is saved from mere ignorance also makes irrelevant the whole commission and claim of the gospel. Remove emotions from one’s reasoning (which many fail to do in our times) and dig deeper into what the various successors of the apostles have said.
It is always seen as denying oneself and that is how we train for self-control. In the Gospels Jesus doesn’t say “if you fast,” but “when you fast.” Matthew 6:16-18. It’s not like it’s a magical “get whatever you want from prayer” thing. It’s about emptying oneself.
Is the sex fast before and after receiving holy communion universally enforced? Whats the justification for it? St. Paul in 1 Corinthians 7 seems to say that this is nobody’s business and to be decided between the husband and wife.
Yes. It is enforced. 1 Corinthians 7 is talking about not allowing others to come between the man and wife and drive divisions between them. Not about teaching what’s expected with regard to fasting and preparation for Holy Communion.
@@living_orthodox it speaks about abstaining from sex for the sake of prayer. That would be fasting. And it’s clear that this is a decision for the husband and wife.
@@MicahMarshall4Truth complain to the Holy Fathers and the Canons. One cannot engage in sexual intimacy before receiving communion. Food, sex etc. I don’t make the rules. I trust in them.
Roman Catholics can start the journey to convert to Orthodoxy at any time. The only union we will ever accept is Roman Catholics joining the Orthodox Church. We have nothing to capitulate.
Catholicism is a divergence from Christian Orthodoxy, I was involved in Catholicism for 13 years and I made my way into Orthodoxy through the process of conversion which requires repentance. I encourage all in Catholicism to do the same.
If those who have been justified are the same as those who are not justified then the good tree and the evil tree bear the same fruit. That is not Orthodox teaching. Jesus said that he who sins is the slave of sin and that whom the Son sets free is free indeed. John wrote: _He that saith he knows him, but who keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him._ (1 John 2:4) This is how we know we are in Christ, if we keep his commandments, as Jesus also says in Mark 10:19. The issue, according to scripture, is fidelity to the commandments. If we violate the commandments with impunity, we are not in Christ.
@@living_orthodoxCertainly God is merciful. But what of people who are continually practicing sin and disobeying God's commands? See Romans 1:24 and also the hardening of Pharaoh's heart who had already hardened it. At some point doesn't God give people over to their desires?

@@jamesbarksdale978 the latter statement gig made sums it up. Mere belief in the mind isn’t enough.

We don't do good works to get saved but we do them out of love and respect for what Jesus did for us and because we are saved
Faith Without Works Is Dead
14 What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? 17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead
God helped me with a lot of things and freed me from many habitual sins like smoking cigs and many other because I also tried to repent without repentance we are living in sin also
The Narrow and Wide Gates

Hey I use my printer as a hat stand too!

Hello father what is your opinion on father Heirs I think he is too. Strict for me maybe I'm mistaken please help
@Desertfox21 I dont know I didn't feel too welcome to his channel and I don't really trust him or father Savvas agioreitis could be wrong and mistaken though. If I'm wrong then what to do I can't do spiritual work all day everyday or cut entertainment video games music etc. Why must I be condemned or called a troll for something that I can't do I'm honest after a while of spiritual work I feel exhausted. Thanks for your time and IL be very happy if you can answer me again.
Father, I as an Orthodox christian, do not know what Bible version is approved by the Orthodox church?
There are so many Bible versions out there.

@Desertfox21The Old Testament in the OSB is the St. Athanasius Academy Septuagint. We do not use the OT of the NKJV, or Masoretic Text in general, but instead the Septuagint.

I look forward to studying EO. God bless
Can you please point to us where in the bible fasting is for self-control?
It is always seen as denying oneself and that is how we train for self-control. In the Gospels Jesus doesn’t say “if you fast,” but “when you fast.” Matthew 6:16-18. It’s not like it’s a magical “get whatever you want from prayer” thing. It’s about emptying oneself.
Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
Properly understood, meekness is the exercise of self-restraint.
@@living_orthodox I’m open to be proven wrong. But this seems like a western Augustinian accretion.

I pray for the day when Roman Catholic church & orthodox church get together again ✝️+☦=😇❤
What’s the Spirit do? Cause from my understanding, your view is if we act like Christ we are covered by grace
It’s not about acting. You’re not looking at it deep enough or honestly enough if that’s what you’re taking from this.
@@living_orthodox Acting/Living/Uniting, whatever. I’m just a little confused on what the Spirits doing in EO Soteriology type jazz.
What kind of hat is that?
A skufia. It's something Russian Orthodox priests wear.
If those who have been justified are the same as those who are not justified then the good tree and the evil tree bear the same fruit. That is not Orthodox teaching.
Jesus said that he who sins is the slave of sin and that whom the Son sets free is free indeed. John wrote:
_He that saith he knows him, but who keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him._ (1 John 2:4)
This is how we know we are in Christ, if we keep his commandments, as Jesus also says in Mark 10:19.
The issue, according to scripture, is fidelity to the commandments. If we violate the commandments with impunity, we are not in Christ.
So donatism and novitianism. Think again. Mercy eludes the heterodox.
@@living_orthodoxCertainly God is merciful. But what of people who are continually practicing sin and disobeying God's commands?
See Romans 1:24 and also the hardening of Pharaoh's heart who had already hardened it. At some point doesn't God give people over to their desires?
