  • Shadow and I are rockhounding for Chalcedony and Agate that is formed in the seams, pockets and cracks of Volcanic Rock. While doing so, we also talk about the geology of the area. Southern Utah has a lot of sedimentary rock, along with its various metamorphic forms. Tectonic forces pushed a once ancient seabed many thousands of feet high. Following that event, volcanic forces brought with it loads of volcanic rock in the form of lava flows, cinder cones, and outcroppings. Finally, geothermal activity brought water mixed with Silica and other elements that washed in and out of the seams, cracks, and pockets within the volcanic rock. Over time, with heat and pressure, the silica was layered and hardened and formed the beautiful chalcedony and agate that we are searching for.
