  • The original 101 Dalmatians was released in 1961 so this year it's 50 years old and is still often cited as one of Disney’s best animated films. BUT did you know it was a major disappointment to Walt Disney himself?! Well, I'm about to show you why 101 Dalmatians was a disappointment to Disney even though it saved his animation studio from being shut down. Enjoy!

I always thought the sketchy animation style was meant to match the storybook look, but I guess that's just a happy accident.

I don't like the Xerography animation style as much as the earlier methods. But be fair, it kept Disney animation going. It paved the way to the Disney Renaissance.

Another fun fact: Cruella de Vil is in fact my grandmother’s favorite Disney villain. She even used to do a good impression of her (even the laugh).

Fun fact: One Hundred and One Dalmatians inspired Matt Groening to create The Simpsons.

I had no idea about the models being used for the cars like that, it's incredible. I had always thought they must have gone in and touched them up with CGI at some point like the Ballroom in Beauty and the Beast.

When I was a kid, 101 Dalmatians used to make young children in my time act like dogs, especially the scene with the Twilight Bark. I was one of the few who didn’t. I just chuckled.

Why did Cruella tell Jasper that he was a slimy, contemptible sewer rat?

I like how Technirama managed to achieve the width of CinemaScope and still have the sharpness of VistaVision.

Sleeping beauty was the end of his era. As wonderfully fun as Dalmatians is, I don't think the magic was there as much or in the movies that followed during walts life

I think the movies were alright until about The Rescuers. Animation up until the release of The Simpsons and The Little Mermaid in 1989 had been difficult to project, make profitable and nearly nothing had been majorly successful before the Disney Renaissance since Fox and The Hound was released. Xography helped animation a lot for Disney. The style was simply a result of a declining animation department and budget. I actually thought the animation had to do with the style and setting of the story. I didn't realize until years later why 101 Dalmatians was animated the way it was.

This is very interested, thank you. I never really liked that scratchy look. Even as a kid. The first Disney film I saw at the cinema was Basil the Great Mouse Detective and those earlier films just weren't available to see for us 80s kids. I would see short clips on Disney Time compilations and stills in books and just didn't like the look of them.

I think the style fits this movie and the rescuers, but Robin Hood, as good as the movie is, does make it look too cheap.
