    *Just to clarify as it didn’t exactly come across well. When I say race mode as a negative I meant for a lot of people who will feel uncomfortable driving with everything off and use the option. They won’t get the most out of this car. Before ending that point I say some people will love it and I’m in that camp. I should have worded it better but hopefully that answers some of the “go back to your 4wd” comments*

    The Giulia Quadrifoglio is my dream car. I hope I will be able to buy one in the future.
    However, the race mode is probably not obvious for many "average" drivers in wet conditions.
    I love the sound of the engine, but it would be great to have the best exhaust sound in dynamic, not only in race mode.
    For that I agree with Stef.

    In dynamic, exhaust opens around 3k rpm on builds before I believe in April 2019. After that they released that the baffles were open in Dynamic as they are open in race mode. Called Dynamic Dual Mode Exhaust. It's my realistic dream car. Dont think there is anything that's better at that price point. Currently driving a Giulia Ti Sport, maybe a Quad next time around

    • @anuragkothari
      @anuragkothari 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I guess you mean Dual instead of Duel. You are absolutely right. It is a zero cost option which is explicitly listed on the Window Sticker of later 2019 Model Year Cars. With Dynamic Dual Mode Exhaust the Car sounds the same in Race and Dynamic Mode. In fact on most of the cars (including mine) Alfa Romeo forgot to program the system correctly at the factory. On the day of delivery I had to talk to the service manager (who was very helpful) about it. The issue was fixed once he reprogramed the car.

      @@anuragkothari correct. Will edit that. Absolutely love these cars! Best drivers car out there! That was one thing I would have changed from the start. Want the sound but nice to have traction on. Glad Alfa listens to what the people want and changed some things on the 2020. Not that what is on before bothered me enough not to by one. Would like a little more exhaust sound out of the 2 liters. Heard some aftermakets that sound pretty good. Enjoy!

    1) Race Mode is for track use (that is why it switches off all the electrical nannies) and is not recommended for use on publics roads / streets. One of the reasons for using RACE mode earlier was the sound but with the Later 2019 MY cars the issue is taken care of by Dynamic Dual Mode Exhaust Feature. Now Dynamic Mode = Race Mode + Electrical Nannies.
    2) Agree on the Tires. On cold mornings I lose traction even in a straight line when I floor the gas pedal. They behave fine once they warm up. Good (or bad) thing is that they don't last long and you can replace them with something else.
    3) Agree on the infotainment being outdated. But good news is that the infotainment system is much better on the 2020s which come with touch screen and a new UI. I checked it out on the 2020 Cars few weeks back when I took my car for service at the dealership and found them to be much better than the 2019 and earlier infotainment system. The 2020s also come with Wireless Phone Charging.
    4) The judder on Full Lock steering (and I guess it only happens at lower speeds) is sort of annoying but thankfully you only use full lock in parking lots so I have sort of gotten used to it.
    Few of the things which you haven't mentioned and I guess you probably haven't experienced are:
    5) I feel the seat bolsters are too tight even in the most extreme relaxed position. Mine are regular seats (Not the Carbon Fiber ones) and they are just comfortable for me. I am not overly large (5'11'') or overweight (172 lbs) so I can see that they can be uncomfortable for someone who may be larger or heavier than average. I guess the bolsters break-in over time and become more comfortable.
    6) Once I get out of the car I have to wait for few seconds after I close the door, before I can lock the car using the keyless door locks (The small touch sensor on the door handle). This is very annoying especially when it is raining.
    7) The key fob is too big and the buttons on it get unintentionally pressed on their own when the key fob is in my pocket (I carry my wallet in the same front pocket so that may be a factor). It is especially annoying when the panic button gets pressed when you are trying to get inside the car or the trunk lid is open when you get out of the grocery store. I have never had this issue with other Cars / Key fobs.
    But hands down this is the best car I have every owned.
    I got this car fully knowing that it is a temperamental car (read unreliable) but guess what I fell in love with it the very first time I test drove it.

    • @tctf1
      @tctf1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Anurag Kothari... key fob issues are easily fixed by opening up the fob (as if replacing the battery), partially prying off the rubber button cover and then snipping off a small portion of the green plastic post under the panic button. It will still work, but will require a firm press and won’t activate while in your pocket.

      How long have you had it, and how has the reliability been?
      I'm looking on the used market for a cool 3.5-3.8 sec 0-60 car and I'm between this, an R35, and an srt10 (I know, it's a manual, I have no preference).
      Something fast in a straight, but would do well on my local track. Insurance is similar, price range is similar. The only unknown with this is the reliability (I've seen mixed reviews) any help would be appreciated!

      Agree with all the points you raised here. When I first bought my car these issues annoyed me a bit. However, it’s only been a month and I’ve already learned to live with them. I was SUPER FRUSTRATED early on when I kept inadvertently activating the panic alarm. Also the wheel skipping annoyed me early on. Changing the tires on this car is A MUST!! Otherwise, it’s the best car I’ve ever owned and I’ve owned quite a few!!

    • @anuragkothari
      @anuragkothari 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RobbbyRay Sorry for the late response and not sure if you are still looking for the car but here is my feedback:
      I have had the car for 9 months now and have faced just one instance of "Service Electronic Throttle Control" when I started the car after it had been sitting in my garage for over a week and it went away in few seconds. But that put the car in limp mode (which I just hated as I drive my car in Dynamic 99% of the time even if that give me like less than 16 miles per gallon). Found out on Giulia forums that it was a common issue and starting the car 3 times will get it out of the limp mode and that did the trick for me.
      This is indeed known to be a temperamental (unreliable) car and I haven't been able to drive mine much since the kung flu started (this is my daily driver but I am WFH now). I still take it out for long drives at least once a week and have only put close to 4500 miles on it so cannot really comment on longterm reliability. If you plan on getting one, a good extended warranty will probably be a good idea.

    A lot of owners have gone for the Exhaust Valve Mod with AHM Alfa in Hampshire. Drive in Dynamic with the full sound a tall times. Not an expensive modification. Winters tyres is an essential to enjoy the car throughout the year, or possibly change the Corsa's over to the Michellin Pilot Sports. Either way the tyre skipping noises are less with winters or the Michellins on.

    Race mode is for the track only unless you are an expert driver. You're right about the tyres but I don't agree about the exhaust - it's fine as it is. Sparco seats and ceramic brakes are not worth the huge extra cost - the standard ones are great. I love mine and would recommend it to anyone.

    The "challenge" is what sports cars were always about, I knew to expect it in the Quad and I welcome it. Also nobody who finds the car scary should be using race on the road, especially a wet road with summer tyres ;)
    It's certainly not for everybody, but race is my favourite mode. It demands your full attention and a lot of respect, as it should, and in the dry it is simply sublime.
    Try downshifting with a little throttle applied if you want some drama, seriously try it!
    The tyre juddering ( it goes away once the tyres are warm ) happens on other high performance cars too, some Porsches for e.g. With the Quad it almost completely goes away If you stick Michelins or Goodyears on, and possibly other tyres too.
    The following quote might help...
    The Alfa Romeo Giulia is characterized by unique suspension characteristics featuring
    patented AlfaTM Link technologies, developed in order to deliver the best dynamic
    performance in any driving condition.
    In particular, the front double-wishbone with semi-virtual steering axle scheme allows an
    “Ackermann” angle change with the variation of the steering angle. Ackerman angle is
    described by the different steering angle between the left/right front wheels.
    This feature, which is normally reserved for premium sport cars, has been the object of
    specific tuning by Alfa Romeo engineers to ensure the lowest vehicle understeer in any
    driving condition and to achieve a breakthrough in Giulia driving dynamic best in class
    steering feeling, enhanced safety and driving pleasure.
    At the maximum steering wheel angle, the specific tuning above mentioned makes the
    front suspension deliver a lower steering angle from the right to left front wheels,
    generating a perceivable dragging phenomenon on the inner wheel, which can be
    perceived as a “chattering” accompanied by some noise which is influenced by one or
    more the following conditions:
    • Driving surfaces and air temperature.
    • Tires pressures.
    • Tire specification, size and brand.
    • Steering angle and speed of the vehicle.

    I love cars that are made by people with an opinion! The people that made this car knew what they wanted... they were not trying to please everyone. You have to know how to roll onto the power same as Ferrari, especially in the wet. Why would u drive it in race mode in the wet and cold anyway? You buy it to drive, not to use the entertainment system. It’s not a daily driver, it’s a fun car that you buy to have fun! It sounds exactly how it should. The wheel skip happens on AMG Mercedes as well. Yes happens when cold. Simple fix, don’t overturn the tires. Lastly, why would you want it any other way? It’s perfect how it is. I wouldn’t want it any less fun or exciting.

  • @barrynevison9472
    @barrynevison9472 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Stef, I think the wheel juddering that you describe on full lock is in fact worse when the road is dry and the surface quite smooth. In your video the ground looked quite rough and it was also damp. It also occurs mainly in the Corsa's. I have concluded that it's partly due to the suspension geometry BUT also due to the minimal and thus very rigid block pattern on the Corsa tyre meaning that the tyre isn't very willing to slip sideways across the ground. Essentially the tyre grabs the ground as it's being pushed sideways on full lock, and then it let's go when the grip can't hold any more causing that horrible juddering sensation. My old Alfa 159 did it as well (much less I hasten to add) but only when the tyres were nearly worn out. At the moment I have some Sottozeros on my QV over winter which have a much more broken block pattern and it doesn't do it at all.
    You are right to somewhat dislike this odd sensation. It feels very weird. The other big dislike is the brake feel which is very hard to modulate, especially around town, resulting in rather more definite stops than you might have intended.
    Overall, however, this is a stonkingly fantastic car and whilst not perfect, none of the negatives outweigh the positives. It puts a huge smile on my face every time I take it out.

    • @StefABtv
      @StefABtv  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Overall it’s a superb car. Yeah definitely worse when the corsa’s are cold lol

  • @inikkor520

    I agree with most of your comments having had two quads. One had the Michelin A/S and in my opinion, it was feeling a lot better during normal driving conditions, especially on cold and dump roads. On a track it would be a different story but how many times is that the case?
    The Ackerman angle setting makes the tires skip. It's not a defect. Porsches do the same even if to a lesser degree.
    The seat deviated stitching in your car is weird. Normally the "Ice" stitching comes with the white-trimmed interior.
    The pitch of the exhaust is lower because the engine is not high revving as in a Porsche. We all are hitting the rev limiter while wishing for more RPMs ;). But I do agree with your preference.
    Anyway, you are the best brit reviewer. Carry on my friend!

    Hello, liked your video. I agree that a sports+ mode like in BMWs would have been nice, and not only for the sound (I installed forza exhaust valve control). What I really don’t like are the breaks. They heat up very quickly and then there is an annoying vibration when you break. I live in Israel which is a hot weather country and the problem occurs after a few short breaking series.

  • @TheMilanMovies

    The tire skipping is a problem across the entire range of Giulia’s. Like you said it probably has to do with cold tires and the way the steering is set up.
    The fact that the exhaust valves can’t be opened manually is kind of annoying but a lot of owners have set it to open on Dynamic mode.
    Infotainment isn’t the strongest point, but I guess it looks nice. The 2020 model year have an updated infotainment system but I haven’t seen that yet so I can’t judge if it is any better.
    No matter what, this car is stunning and I would love to own one in the future. Not a Quadrifoglio per se, that’s to overkill for me as a daily driver. But a Giulia Super or Veloce would be one hell of a daily driver I think.

    Four wheel drive??? Are you kidding???.... its SUPPOSED to be exciting and a bit scary... it's got 500+ bhp for Christ,s sake... if you don't like it or want it go and buy a Prius....
    AHM , Supercar Rooms and Celtic Tuning can do exhaust valve mod for all of about £300 if you really want it.
    Michelin or Bridgstone tyres better in damp and winter.
    Juddering noise at the front is just the way the suspension is set up. If you want a car capable of 190mph then it keeps the car stable. That's how the car is designed.
    But life is full of choices so why not take the bus !

    Stef, great video. I bought a brand new 2018 alfa qv. In trefeo white. I was in love with it and then I fell out of love with it. I traded it for a 2018 m4 competition package. The alfa qv is the better performance car. However the m4 is the all around better car . You really have to push the alfa to have fun and get all the fun exhaust notes. As a daily the alfa has a very compliant suspension with little exhaust note. The m4 has a sense of occasion. The m4 is faster from 0-30 mph. In real world the m4 is the stop light to stop light king. The alfa needs room to exploit its power. The alfa suffers from turbo lag and the power doesn't always come when you want it or need it. That makes the car crazy in race mode and can be somewhat unsettling. I'm a fairly good driver and the alfa made me pucker more than once. The m4 is very predictable and just as fast . The interior quality of the alfa is basic and lacks serious quality. The infotainment is 2008 ish. However it is still a great car. I will continue to follow alfa and look forward to a 2door coupe. I didn't mean to write do much. Keep up the good work.

    I think you have the race mode criticism exactly backwards. Having race mode available for when you want it and conditions that allow for it expands the use of the car. People would be killing themselves if it didn’t have driver’s aids. What you say goes for any 400hp+ rwd cars. Also it allows for people to get used to the car in a safe way and explore when possible and take the “training wheels” off from time to time.
    I have a 3” exhaust with a Forza controller so I leave the exhaust valves open all the time, even when starting cold... you should hear the glorious sound from the QV on a cold start with exhaust valves wide open and a 3” exhaust...I have video of it if you want to hear it...
    The Corsa tires can’t be used in the cold for sure so I keep them for the summer and use all seasons in the winter. Yeah the Corsa’s warmed up don’t make noise when on full lock. That’s why in the winter they are clunky but hot summer days they are quiet.
    I have the same color combination with yellow calipers. It’s all good though nothing is perfect but I love the DNA-R knob and modes and having the ability to change the exhaust valves at will is nice, sometimes I do turn it down to quiet it at night so the neighbors don’t hate lol. As to the Corsa’s I have Michelin AS3+ all seasons for cold temperatures, don’t intend tons of snow driving here in NY, and the Corsa sidewalls are much more pliant and comfortable despite being an ultra performance summer tire. The Michelin’s are harder riding and louder so the Pirelli’s have their advantages too. They do wear out quicker, especially at the track but they die heroes!!

    I also wish that I could zoom in further with the nav system in the North-up orientation without it changing to "whichever way you're going is up".
    Finally, it would be nice if I could scroll through the Sirius XM station list starting at the station I'm listening to instead of from the bottom of the dial.

    I got a 2019 Giulia Ti Lusso last year (May 2021) after my 2008 BMW 335i coupe was rear-ended. I switched after 40+ years of driving BMWs because the past two generations of BMWs aren't as fun to drive. They don't put a smile on my face. I then experienced late life crisis in November and traded the Ti Lusso for a 2021 QV in Trofeo White tri-coat.
    I would've ordered a 2022 with carbon fiber seats but Trofeo White or Competitizone Rosso were unavailable. The QV leather/Alcantara seats were unavailable also and were replaced by the regular leather sport seats due to supply chain issues. I was pleasantly surpised at how nice the black leather/Alcantara seats look as photos, videos don't show off the low key beauty of the all black interior. You have different material textures and tones of black (Nappa leather, Alcantara, soft touch vinyl, carbon fiber) that subtly play off one another for an understated, sophisticated study in black. I was also very surprise at how much comfort Alcantara adds to the seats - it breathes, stays cool, and dry. And is not cold in the winter.
    It's a great all around car - a super sedan/saloon that can switch to a comfortable car around town or become a fast four door GT for longer trips. Many owners and reviewers have noted improvements with the 2020 MY which are must haves for me. (Phil at Auto Fanatic prefers the rawness of the early QVs.) The position of the parking brake switch was ackward in the early cars and peeved me greatly.
    Race Mode - This is a track only mode per the manual. It's great to have this mode available for the track.
    Tires - I can hardly wait for the Corsas to wear out so I can switch to Michelin's Pilot Sport 4S. I think there are two reasons the car has Pirelli Corsas: 1) The car is Italian so it has to have Pirellis! 2) Alfa needs to sell the car with the same tire they used to set the Nurburing lap time if they wanted to advertise this time.
    AWD - I want the QV because it is RWD. I don't want AWD with the attendant extra weight, cost, and complexity. I would have choosen an Audi if I wanted faster, more secure wet performance. I'll just slow down in the wet. The Stelvio QV is a wonderful AWD car but it costs a good chunk of money more.
    Exhaust - I'm happy with the exhaust as set up in the 2020 MY. I prefer to be in good terms with my long term neighbors so it's in Natural mode around town. Dynamic has nice exhaust sounds and is perfect. Just get the aftermarket tweaks if it's a pre-2020 MY.
    Infotainment - The 2020 MY is definitely better than prior years and is good enough for me. I choose the car primarily for the exterior and interior design and great handling. Hint: Install a JL subwoofer system to dramatically improve the overall sound quality. The extra bass provides a foundation for the mids and highs so the overall sound is improved. You need not play it at extreme volumes to hear the improvement. I makes the Harmon Kardon sound like a real premium sound system. (Sirius and FM won't show off the improvement as the sound is compressed for Sirius and the radio.)
    Seating Position - It's perfect. Your body is aligned with the steering wheel, gas pedal, and brake pedal. It's surprising how many cars have you seated in a slightly twisted position with legs slightly sideways in one direction and arms on the steering wheel a little off to the other direction. You're in a comfortable neutral position in the Giulia.
    Brake Feel - The lack of brake pedal feel/feedback due to the brake by wire system is a huge disappointment and MAJOR dislike. This is my major gripe with the car and keeps it from being a perfect car. Older BMWs are the benchmark for brake feel and I miss this greatly. I think the feel/response when coming to the last foot of a full stop is better with the 2020 QV than the the 2019 Ti Lusso. It took me 2 months with the 2019 before I could make a smooth final stop without the car jerking. So maybe I'm maybe I've acclimated to the brake by wire. I was just used to the BMW feel.
    Steering - I miss the thinner steering wheel in the Giulia Ti Lusso. Right away you feel this car has character and is different. It has very fast and light steering that makes the car feel lithe. The 2020 QV has a slightly thicker wheel than the 2019 Ti Lusso. The QV steering effort is firmer - I don't know if this is due to the larger tires or if there's a change made to the steering. I did find the regular Giulia to be a little nervous on some 50mph curves. Current BMW steering wheels are way too thick to be comfortable for me and my hands take XL gloves.
    Cheers!

  • @mattbettany1174
    @mattbettany1174 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Stef , the issue with the tyres scrubbing on full lock is quite normal and can seem quite discerning to most . Giulias run a fair bit of negative camber on the front wheels which is one of the reasons they turn in so well , they do wear tyres on the inner edge though as a result . You’re probably aware as a motoring journalist of Ackermann steering geometry, where one wheel is aligned to a different arc on lock to the opposite wheel in order for the car to turn along a natural path . The negative camber though affects the geometry on extremes . The reason is stopped on your demo is probably down to the fact it was wet so you had more slippage . I remember in my old car sales days getting in an Audi R8 and thinking I’d knackered it turning those big sticky tyres on the showroom tiled floor as it did exactly what you described. That’s when I learned about Ackermann geometry

    Those indicator stalks, much like on earlier BMW models is very irritating. Wish they would go back to the old system. See Doug Munro’s video on this car, if you want to know what I mean.
    The tyres - the Pirelli Corsa P Zeros are great in hot weather, but in cold, wet or mild conditions they don’t have the grip. There’s a remedy - switch over to Michelin Cup 4s(just seen your video - and you mention it - hey, great minds think alike). So - that’s one easy fix.

    and i hope his next car (which also arrives around the same time next week 😬) brings as much joy as the giulia!

    How do you go in neutral while the car is moving? How can you rev the motor while slowing down at a stop light, for example?
