    This video gave me the knowledge and courage to attempt to cure my low to no idling, stalling at idle,, 1990 115 Crossflow, did the link & sync,, then applied a bit of timing, starts as soon as I touch the key, Idle all day long !! Purrfect TY so much !!

    TY Brandon !!! just snagged a 1990 115 that starts hard and doesn't like to idle, runs great if ya throw it in gear and idle it above 1200 then throw it to it , plugs read great !! This upload is gonna do me well

      if the synch and timing is in spec, and you still can't get it to run right chances are its an ignition issue. Just finished diagnosing a tired 1987 88hp... both the stator AND timer base were shorting to ground!

    Wish it shared what "adjusting throttle cable tension" entails instead of just saying to do it

    • @ct1762
      @ct1762 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      its in the shop manual. very simple put control handle in FWD DETENT then back off so its as low as it will go WITHOUT being in neutral. adjust thumbwheel on throttle cable so all slack is out with thumbwheel. put retainer on and check your work. the idle stop screw should be firmly on its stop when cycling from full throttle to neutral. extremely easy, but screw it up and the motor will idle erratically because its running lean from throttle plates open.

    Is this the same procedure for a 1984 115 crossflow. I have a lean pop at idle

    • @ct1762
      @ct1762 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      nope. this is a looper... get the factory service manual it will walk you through it for the crossflows. not hard and worth the $20 investment!

      @@bryanperrelli7805 probably figured it out by now, but those throttle plates must be perfectly closed at idle or it will be hard to start and give you a lean sneeze or pop

    Not to be a downer..i used to be in a fire dept. We had a call for a lady somehow got her fingers caught between the cartridge and opening of a vcr while inserting it. We had to unscrew the cover to free her. When i saw your baby shove the tape in i cringed a little bit. Yeah, i know its unlikely but its happened. Maybe it was because it was a woman.😊

    ONLY problem with this original video that contains misinformation is the directions to adjust the idle at the end.so unfortunately if your idle adjustment is off, changing it will change the first adjustments out of synch. I'd suggest combining this video with this video: th-cam.com/video/uJTx-ygU23U/w-d-xo.html to understand that only the timing is advanced to increase the idle speed and so during idle, the throttle butterfly plates remain closed and in fact a small gap should be present between the cam and cam roller pickup.
    Take care

    • @ct1762
      @ct1762 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the idle pickup timing number doesn't really matter because yes, when you go to adjust idle speed in the water it will throw that original # off because the throttle came angle changed, and thus pickup timing. so good observation! the thing the service manual really hits home is that the throttle plates need to be closed at idle. on this model, a gap isn't necessary between the cam and roller, but the loop-charged motors (most of them) do need one.

    • @JimTMcDaniels1
      @JimTMcDaniels1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That error of instructions to do the idle adjustment as the last step instead of the third step(after adjusting butterfly linkage) has messed so many people up I see on the forums and messed me up when I got my used Evinrude.
      Ruined some trips to the lake because the manual says the same wrong thing. It is nice seeing the video in addition to the manual but come on, they really messed peeps up with the error...
      These lake used old engines have a lot of life and advantages in them, let’s keep them going proud!
      Take care

    • @ct1762
      @ct1762 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JimTMcDaniels1 hey i agree. I have my own business dedicated to these old girls! But I disagree that it's an error. as I said, it's not the final idle adjustment that matters... only the first as a starting point. they dont explain in the manual, but it's implied that pickup timing isn't a final number, but to make sure the cam roller is on center with the mark, and that the throttle valves are closed at idle. You can't do the idle speed without setting the high speed timing first, because it will throw high speed timing off even though idle speed is separate from high speed timing because the idle adjustment screw changed the attitude of the throttle cam if you do it first, not last. The video you linked to is for a 3 cyl 56 cube looper motor... completely different linkage and running characteristics than a v4 crossflow!

    • @JimTMcDaniels1
      @JimTMcDaniels1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the discussion!
      But I would point out that the manual and video really DOESN’T say the butterfly valves have to be closed at idle!
      Because doesn’t it tell us to close the butterfly valves and place the cam roller against the cam THEN adjust the idle AND if you need to bring up the idle screw, then that will move the cam forward ALONG with the opening up the butterfly valves which is a NO NO!?

    • @JimTMcDaniels1
      @JimTMcDaniels1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Setting the idle First can’t change the max timing advance because in this particular design, the fast timing stop screw hoods the max and the idle screw does not change that but only moves either closer or further from the max.
      The video link I gave shows how they changed their instructions in the newer years, correcting their error of not adjusting the idle sooner in the steps where it should be.
