British Gurkhas vs French Foreign Legion - What’s the difference?
British Gurkhas and French Foreign Legion are known as some of the fiercest warriors ever to take up arms. Both are top military units recruited by their respective armies from beyond their national borders. The Gurkhas hail from Nepal, while the Legion is international volunteers fighting under the French flag. Both units have legendary status through centuries of service, renowned for their exceptional courage, discipline, and loyalty. Around 200 years ago, the British were in a battle with Nepal during the Anglo-Nepal Wars. Even though they were at odds, the Brits were really impressed by the fierce fighting spirit of these Nepalese hill soldiers. Later on, the Brits recruited these fighters, and they became some of the most fearsome, courageous, and brave warriors, known as the Gurkhas. They fought in British forces in almost every major conflict in the last 200 years including both World Wars and in Iraq and Afghanistan. They are the nightmare of every intruder with the wrong intention. In one instance, a single Gurkha defeated 30 Taliban fighters while being heavily outnumbered. There are currently over 4000 Gurkhas serving in infantry, engineering, signal, logistic and training and support units. On the other hand, the French Foreign Legion is an elite corps of the French Army that consists of several specialties: infantry, cavalry, engineers, and airborne troops. It was created in 1831 to allow foreign nationals into the French Army. They often handle the tough, behind-the-scenes missions around the globe for the French government. Their role is quieter, more dangerous. Their training is often described as not only physically challenging, but also very stressful. The legionnaires are a key component of the French Army, comprising around 8,500 members from 50 different nationalities. Within the Legion, there's an elite unit comprised of top soldiers selected from its already elite parachute regiment. In short, it’s a team of the best of the best.

The British Gurkhas are a light infantry unit, it is difficult to compare with the Legion which has sappers, paratroopers, cavalry, mountain commandos and who are twice as numerous. In any case a fight between them would be a real terrible bloodbath.😕😕

Gurkhas also have their own support units as stated in the clip. Signaller/Engrs/Logistics - I don't think they have their own dedicated arty units though. Could be wrong on that. I left a long time ago! There have been some Gurkhas who have gone into the SAS so I would not be surprised to hear of them also in a Ranger unit or even SRR.

I first got to know about the Gurkhas from my father who interacted with them during the Malayan Emergency (1948-1960). The locals loved them because they were respectful and polite. Whenever they went out for R&R, their main objective was to eat good cheap food, watch a film, and shopping. Whereas the British, Australian, Kiwis, Fijians, would head to the nearest bar after getting some food, and drink themselves silly. Then they would get into drunken brawls, only to be escorted back to base by MPs. To Malayans, that was the difference. One was welcomed by the locals due to their respect for the locals, the other just wanted to paint the town red and expect the locals to pick up the pieces, literally. I can imagine the French Foreign Legion, being a Western military outfit, would have been similar to the British forces. From what I read of them, their treatment of the locals during the Indo-China war did not endear them to the locals.

Put the Gurkha brigade into a forest say with a FFL brigade and it would be a messy affair but I'm willing to say it would be the Gurkhas still standing at the end of it. As elite infantry goes they are without a doubt amongst the best on the planet, arguably the best.
In most other areas the FFL would probably prevail simply because they encompass almost all roles expected of any army. They could even consume their own smoke in special operations which the Gurkha brigade is not trained for though if tasked to such would give a good account of themselves.

The best French military man was Napoléon, it is also the things that made him great that are also pitfalls. His men admired him immensely this could make himself a gathering point when not wanted, also he explain to his men with attention to detail his plans, this is good if the plan's work if not the men didn't have the where with all to improvise. In this way he was the opposite to Wellington. Napoléon won 60 out of 70 battles with this amount you would expect to lose some, Wellington never lost a battle at the same time I don't know how many battles he was in but 100 percent isn't bad.

@ogamiitto8627 borders and land mean nothing. The goal is to destroy the enemy. Once it is done, you'll take everything back.

Perhaps the Legionarres are more dangerous than the Gurkhas, but I would rather work with the Gurkhas. Gurkhas are elite soldiers who join for a better life and want to be in the British Army. Almost without fail the Gurkhas I have met are friendly and enthusiastic. French Foreign Legionnaires are too often brutes who want to fight but who have discipline/legal issues other armies will not accept.

Perhaps you've never had the opportunity to see a single legionnaire in your life! I had the opportunity to see them in Corsica (and I have a friend who was one too)! They were all pleasant people, and never once did they get into a fight.
A single legionnaire would never get into a fight, because they know what's waiting for them.
A legionnaire is precisely a volunteer who serves or has served France with honour and loyalty - as article 1 of the Legionnaires' Code of Honour reminds us.
Now if someone else provokes him, it's not the same thing.
You also have to bear in mind that these soldiers can leave from one day to the next on an operation from which they will never return, and they accept that.

I don't want to be disrespectful but I think you're talking bullshit, the Legionnaire is surely the most disciplined soldier in the world.

Marcelo, Italian are we? At least the French show up on the battlefield and don't bribe their opponents like the Italians in Afghan.............
      ..
The French are treated with respect by us Brits, the Italians, contempt.

Remind me Marcello when in 1940 the Italians wanted to invade France and that 8 Frenchmen stood up to the entire Italian army or when at Bir Akeim 3500 Frenchmen destroyed the Italo-German divisions 1 against 10..
