He mentions in other videos that he has had lots and lots of musical theory .. if I understand it right that means he understands the underlying structure of music so with his relative pitch he "knows" how it builds with listening to a short piece (I have absolutely no musical ability so I could have it completely wrong)
You're close. So relative pitch is a developed skill where basically you memorize a set of tones that you can remember perfectly. Then when listening to other songs you count the intervals between your note and the one you hear. Then in the case of a full song you play based on the interval leaps in the song. It's really difficult and takes years to master. Perfect pitch on the other hand is an inate ability to hear a sound and recognize which exact note it is, lucky bastards.

Well,to me he's kinda like the Tiger Woods of Guitar-dom, having that innate talent and just learned how to bring it out. The Dooo has been playing about 16 years or so, by his own admission, so I'm guessing that he's got some pretty good numbers as far as practicing hours are concerned. But that's where the innate talent comes in.... I will never be that good, even if I practice 10x that much, 'cuz I don't have that "it" factor, right? So, I just enjoy watching his videos, loving his playing style and guitar tone, and be content with that... I've even been turned on to some new music not already in my lexicon by him, so it's a win-win as far as I'm concerned! BTW, he can sing pretty good too, just in case you were wondering... 😁

You should check out some Charles Berthoud videos. The Improv isn't quite as good as Eric but he is the best technical bass player of our generation by far.

Regardless of the talent, a little trick he does in video editing is to let the video on the left side run in real time until he starts playing the requested song on the right side and then adjust with the proper reaction again on the left side. There may be a time gap of a few seconds or even minutes.
Also, i wouldnt say the Doo is the best (ive been a massive fan since his name was mountaindoo BUT i do think he can keep up with the best in guitar skill, Just not their Legacy they created like Steve Vai, Jason Becker, etc. But on a skill level i feel hed be able to do anything they could do
