Well, I am a man, a father to a daughter and a husband to a wife. I raised my daughter to have her own mind and do what is best for her. I was raised to think about what others think and take actions on that. I feel that our culture enslaves is to those who wants to control us. My daughter will not be living the Hmong wife life as she will be a doctor in a year. I treat my wife with freedom and she can choose to do what she wants. If she does not want to be with me than she does not have to. No death due us part thing.

I got very lost listening to this story. First, I thought it was going to be about karma because of someone stealing the buried treasure, then it was a orphan story, then it turned to marrying a Chinese guy, becoming happily married because it required little labor, hating on the hmong lifestyle because its hard work, then envying it, hating it again, boasting about Chinese health and how to make some sort of yam tea. Then at the end, remind us to love both culture 🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

I completely understand this. As I age, I do missed the traditional things. Every culture does things differently and it’s not that one is better than the others. We need to respect each other’s cultures. It’s true that Hmong women does so much for their husband’s family and still these families continues to belittle the Nyab… Let’s do better moving forward to our future daughter in laws….

If you live in china trust me, all asian women work harder than men you would not be saying this. You have no relatives to cook a huge party for/with so you would never understand. It's a great lesson to learn. It's about spoil vs hard work. Your mother was spoiled by your father so she became lazy and dependent on him. So when she married hmong she does not want to be a real wife and work hard to establish a life from scratch. Every culture has it's own structure and there's good and bad.

I’m a nyab myself and I live 75% of my life in the darn kitchen. We have HUGE families, therefore, we cook more, wash more, clean more, and work more. Hmong men gets offended by this story because they typically are not the ones living in the kitchen day & night.

Whoa! I see a lot of mixed feelings and comments-half positive and half negative. I do feel the story was incomplete. What happened to the man who ‘supposedly’ stole her parent’s money? It seems the mother (tug nam tais) eventually knew who it was - someone from the village. I wish the daughter would have elaborated more about her father - what part of China did he come from? Why did he choose to live among the Hmong? It makes me wonder if he was an outcast or an orphan himself. He may not have been ‘Chinese’ at all. I’m sure he has an interesting story too that led him to do business with the Hmong and to live amongst them. There are so many ethnic groups that lived amongst each other, especially in China. He may have come from China, but maybe he is of another ethnic group. Who knows. What I do appreciate is the truth to this story….which is tug Nam Tais’s experience as an orphan and being sold off to an older Chinese man. She was threatened by her own people. Dead or alive, she will marry this Chinese man, knowing that there is a chance she could be murdered for her organs. And the relatives were OK with this. This is pure selfishness and greed. I think it’s more important to emphasize this, than to say that she was looking down on her own people. I don’t think she was spoiled at all. I think she was fortunate her Chinese husband happened to be more loving and caring. Her relatives were marrying her off blindly. Yet, she ended up with a better life. And let’s acknowledge it, Hmoob nyaabs work their butts off and receive very little credit, acknowledgement, nor respect. I completely understand what this lady’s mother is talking about and what she [herself] is talking about. Yuav Hmoob yeej khwv dlua. I know it from my own experience. This is an incredible story no matter how any one of us feel about it. This is the first time I’m hearing about someone (from tug Nam Tais’s generation) marrying a Chinese man-especially knowing that our relationship with the Chinese is rooted in oppression and hostility. For the daughter to still acknowledge her own people, speak the language, and allow her own daughter to marry her mom’s relative…I think that speaks volumes. Had she not share this story, I would have never imagined that Hmong people (back in the days) allowed their daughters to marry Suav. And to know that there is such a Hmong lady who married outside of her culture…..I find her story compelling. I am happy tug Nam Tais lived a better life and so did the daughter.

The story is surreal and fiction at time in Laos, especially life living at the time of her mom in Laos. There are too many things irrelevant since in the beginning to the end of the story saying her parents were rich and educated. This was because her dad was Chinese born She didn't stop to criticizing Hmong tribes. She's pointing out that Hmong people were born poor and had no socialization. Only Chinese born are human being there.

Oh. Sweetie. You’re lucky that you’re in America and don’t have to deal with traditional Chinese in-laws where they expect their daughter in-law(s) to katow bc they’re seen as second class citizens. If you were Hmong living in China, married to a Chinese, they would slave you just as much as a nyab Hmong. I’ve seen both of my hmong sisters have it good and have bad marrying outside of their kind. Don’t stereotype, unless you slept with 100% of the world’s Hmong population.
