I believe this is the helicopter that crashed while an instructor was demonstrating the auto-rotation capabilities to an Alaskan businessman and his two sons while transporting the helicopter to Anchorage, Alaska. The crash happened in Southeast Alaska and killed three people; the instructor, the businessman and one of his sons. One son survived and I met the remaining family on a flight from Anchorage to Seattle. A very heartbreaking event for the wife and other children. She was also pregnant at the time of the accident.

The infamous "Huey" UH1, during Vietnam was built in several different configurations UH1 B thru H models. The H had the most internal room, largest seating capacity, and largest engine 1,800hp Turbine. These were designed to lift dead Hueys, airplanes, and jeeps out of the forest and back to the bases for repairs. From the 1980's to current, it was common to take a small body UH1B and install the UH1H engine and blades etc. and use it for heli logging, and many other rescue and lifting operations, they named the popular conversion "Super B" . To date, there has not been another helicopter so universal, modifiable, or popular.
@@timmorris3056 You refer to Army versions. The Marines used the UH-1N also known as the "twin pac" Huey which operated the twin PT-6 engines versus the Army's T53 powered versions. The horsepower for the H models is 1400 although they use the Cobra Huey motor these days (1800 hp) and call them Super 205s or Super H's making similar adjustments as the B model with the updated motor/rotorblades/etc.
@@billyboblillybob344 That's great info, you're aware of the many configurations as well. We used to live in Darby Montana near the Garelick helicopter company where they performed many modifications and were able to see the many applications for these birds. Have a Great day.
@@timmorris3056 Yeah, I know Garlick. The owner of that shop is the only person to own a commercial Huey Cobra. The Army called them AH-1G or the updated version AH-1S. The 'commercial' version was designated the Bell model 209. It is sort of the poor man's version of the K-Max which is referred to as an aerial truck where it is minimal helicopter with a powerful engine and can be used for heli-lift work and not have to worry about transporting people because there is no cabin. Garlick's 209 didn't last long however as he put it into a lake trying to lift out another helicopter that went into the lake. So ended the commercial Cobra experiment.

Not really. Gyroplanes "glide" because they have an enormous amount wing versus weight. Helicopters basically have a controlled descent by using the energy of the (presumably) continuing rotation of the rotor blades. The more actual flight taking place in an auto rotation scenario, the less flight time the pilot has so decisions have to come fairly quickly. One scenario I am familiar with had a pilot lose power while heli-logging. He was able to drop his load and auto rotate for almost a mile to land it on a heli-pad. The only damage was whatever happened that caused the loss of power.
