In this powerful 19th century romance set in the American Northeast, Abigail (Katherine Waterston), a farmer’s wife, and her new neighbor Tallie (Vanessa Kirby) find themselves irrevocably drawn to each other. A grieving Abigail tends to her withdrawn husband Dyer (Casey Affleck) as free-spirit Tallie bristles at the jealous control of her husband Finney (Christopher Abbott), when together their intimacy begins to fill a void in each other's lives they never knew existed. Directed by Mona Fastvold and scripted by Jim Shepard and Ron Hansen, THE WORLD TO COME explores how isolation is overcome by the intensity of human connection.

Adore that this was shot on 16mm film. It gives this such a richness and texture lost since the 90s.

It was absolutely beautiful and breathtaking on the big screen. Kudos to director Mona Fastvold for choosing to shoot with 16mm.

Ammonite, Portrait of a Lady on Fire and now this...is heartbroken yearning period lesbians becoming a genre?
You forgot Carol.
@@jwl00066 Have you seen Summerland?
Oh it’s been a genre. I’m so over it.
I did like Ammonite, actually I find the performances in all those films so far quite good (my opinion) but it is indeed curious that women sentimental relationships are frequently framed in this period backgrounds. Maybe its because they are relatively new stories to mainstream cinema and its easier to portray them this way than more complex narratives with coming out, repercusions, long-term stories...involving the characters in society. In that sense I liked Disobedience better, for example. That Indiewire comment post was sure interesting btw

What a chemistry the two protagonists have. Katherine's simple beauty and tender sweetness mixed with Vanessa's captivating beauty create a mind-boggling formula. Brave, a really good movie.
One of the things that's very rarely attended to in films is authenticity of dialogue. That is, people spoke entirely differently 'back then'. (Whenever 'then' might be.) What usually happens is that the filmmakers shrug at the notion, and the production carries on with characters somewhat 'appropriately'. So hats off to these filmmakers.
The book is written like that. As a nonenglish native speaker I had my happy troubles with it.

Thank you for this movie Bleeker Street production team, Vanessa Kirby & Katherine Waterson. I'm 3 yrs late to the show, but I am mesmerized by this movie. The scenery, the camera angles & lighting, the narration by Abigail, Tallie's voice, the exchange of words between Tallie & Abigail that are sometimes in 'code', the stares and glances, the subtle touches, the longing, the desire, the passion, the chemistry between these two actresses, the realization that they both are feeling true love for the first time in their lives. Even the utter sadness in the movie is perfectly done. It is addictive to me. Just brilliant. As every other fan of the movie, the death of Tallie was heartbreaking and once again, lesbians are short-changed with a trope ending. Please give us a sequel showing more of their time together or better yet, a sequel that has Abigail waking from a bad dream about Tallie's death (yes, I know that's another cliche' ). Show that they end up together after Finny dies in a farming accident? Abigail's husband always knew there was something between the two of them so he accepts Tallie into their home and accepts Tallie & Abigails love, BUT...not a love triangle where the man gets both women cliche' 🙄 They live together happily ever after, raising children together including Tallie's child that she gives birth to after the death of Finny 🥰👩👩👧👧 Of course, just Tallie & Abigail living together would be better but because of the time period it likely would not have been possible because women and men depended on each other so much at the time because of 'gender roles & obligations'.
I really loved this movie. It was very sad but I love how they conveyed their feelings over the screen. I felt like Katherine's character was really much in love. Vanessa's character is a bit more reserved but when it did come it was a strong punch of love.
It's amusing that people are complaining because we're getting multiple wlw films in the same genre. Some of these people obviously didn't grow up at a time where there was *maybe* one wlw film released in a year (you'd have to search to even hear about it or find it anywhere) and it was almost always an indie film that was barely watchable. IDGAF if we get five films in a single year all set in the 1800s... that means we have five films to watch!! That means studios are making wlw films and putting out trailers mainstream!!! What a luxury it is for us to actually be picky now because we actually have more content to choose from. It's absolutely glorious tbh.
Could not agree more, it is certainly also a way for us, queer folks, to map our existence back to a history that did not yet have the vocabulary we now have to claim and make history alonside other people. But nonetheless we were there, we are here, and to rescue from oblivion or non-existance those very same scarce subtextual daily gestures and words that laid out the fabric out of which bolder more consistent and wider expressions of wanting, loving, acting, were born - what a privilege, what a connection.
YAS!! PREACH!
I love this comment so much!!
Yeah I don't really care about the setting if theres good chemistry I'm IN but for.the.love.of.God give us some happy endings dammit! 😤😭
I don't hate the genre. I'm sad that my heartstrings are yanked and then cut in half every. single. time. I'm turning 40 and remember very well how few lesbian films were made and how bad the production was. And I absolutely love Sarah Waters' novels and the subsequent television adaptations which are all Victorian and end in a depressing fog. However, even as someone who majored in history and adores period dramas, I too grow tired of the depressing format that a period lesbian romance will inevitably be. It's practically a requirement. A bit more representation would be nice.
You know what, I love lesbian period pieces. What can I say I love the angst, the drama, all the lingering touches. I do wish that not all of them ended in tragedy or unhappiness for the two women.
This is why I re-watch Gentleman Jack so often.
@@EricaGamet Right?? At least we can see an happy ending and not feel depressed about our own futures as queer people, when there are so many lesbian movies that end tragically.
@@griley.generation3158 Imagine me and you also have happy ending.
I have watched this trailer every day for a week now. There is some kind of indescribable appeal to it, to this setting, and to these characters. So intriguing, and it has such strong shall I write “intimacy” to it, that I feel that I am interrupting and should not be here watching it. I believe that music plays a big part in it, and it captures the Frontier period so well.
I can only imagine what the movie will do. Prepare for magnificence in cinematography, acting, dialogues, and music!
I want one movie about two girls, or two guys, getting together in the past and no one in their repressed town cares. It would be the twist ending of all twist endings.

LOL, YES.
After watching the movie I have huge huge crush on Vanessa Kirby , her voice , the way she look at her love , she nail at her acting and whatever role she play, next Oscar to her belt, I have to say despite the fact Vanessa broke her ankle and was siting the way she play it, she make such powerful message that what an actress she is, phenomenal performance in pieces of woman and the world to come, the first 2 main role movie she starts she make such a bang
I have to say that I like her in The Crown, it grew after watching Pieces of a Woman but I fell in love with her in this movie. She has shown what else she can offer as an actress. You will see it in the littlest thing she does in the film. She absolutely nailed it. And I have to say the same to Katherine, she was phenomenal as well. I love their chemistry. They are so convincing and looks really in love with each other. They register well onscreen unlike other couples who are just clearly acting and were not convincing at all.
@@karrendomingo8906 Vanessa bring it to herself to watch real person in labour to play martha , normally any actress could watch video but she just sit there and watch for 7 hours and her labour scene is so convincing, I am just afraid she might be molest by shia in the movie cos is really convincing, in the world to come her love could literally get pregnant by listening to Vanessa voice or when she look at her 🤣 I hope she win the emmy, she should win the golden globe

Vanessa's voice 😍 so elegant ❤
No happy ending for these two, but you will get “Astonishment & Joy”. 😉
To know and feel deeply loved-after ALL that these two characters have been thru, I guess we have to be satisfied with that being enough. Considering the time, place and circumstances in which these characters find themselves in-the brutality of conditions and men they married, how could they ever run far enough away to escape and actually be together? The story, as unfortunate as it is for these characters, does remain true to the times in which they live in. It begs the question, can finding “true” love, true connection and the best sex of your life, be ENOUGH for the rest of your life, if NOW is all you are given?
“Better to have loved than to have never loved at all” even if it doesn’t last forever.
My answer: A resounding YES
thanks for spoilers
@@bshara Your welcome 😉
Honestly tho, I didn’t give anything away that you didn’t already know.
I absolutely agree! The fact that Abigale and Tallie were able to provide each other love, comfort and joy, in the 1800’s was ENOUGH. ❤️
You are my “city of joy”.
They fulfilled their desires, their words of ‘wishes’ as stated to each other in this beautiful video. You absolutely feel their deep longings-to be more than what their lives reflect. Two caged birds, desperately clinging to each other for love and strength to survive the brutality of their lives.
Their love was short lived but will remain strong and long lasting, as I believe it will remain in Abigail’s heart throughout her lifetime. It will be ‘their’ remembered love that will revive Abigail’s marriage and enable her to remain moving forward with Dyer. She may NEVER love him in the way she loved Tally, but I think she found the healing she needed to continue her future with him. As Tally said, “You KNOW that you were loved”. Their love, will be enough to sustain her in the darkest moments, and to continue to build a life and family with her husband. That is what ‘love’ does, it’s encircles you, it fills you...it keeps you!
Little women meets Portrait of a Lady on Fire in isolation that rings familiarity with Covid-19 quarantine. I'm so here for it.
Can’t wait to see these great performances!!!

After seeing the movie 1 too many times…. and stumbling on this trailer again. Man I have to admit that the trailer is actually better than the actual movie, although I appreciated the latter a lot.
But the trailer conveys that sustained sense of tension and crisis that the movie doesn’t really provide. The movie is full of silence, absence, longing, you don’t see the break, you don’t witness the loss. You heard about it afterwards. And to me, that makes the story even more grave and sad.
