You are right.....On the 18th of September 1921, the Republic of the Rif was founded under the leadership of Muhammad Ibn 'Abd al-Karim al-Khattabi, following a string of victories he achieved in coalition with Rif tribes against the occupying Spanish army. At the time, Morocco was divided into both a Spanish and a French-controlled territory.
