Calgary Alberta and the Hart family, has a huge legacy in that city. They were the pioneer's of Stampede Wrestling, and several of the Hart brothers were school teachers :-). I was taught by 2 of them. Nice family. RIP Owen Hart 💌
When I (American) was stationed in Scotland in the 1980s (just outside Dunoon), it took me about 2 months to be able to completely understand the local accent.
No one from Canada (or the US) says “Calgary Alberta,” we just say “Calgary.” Adding the province/state name is not an American thing unless there is likelihood of confusion.
I have friends in norway and the Netherlands who understand me perfectly yet if americans or english hear a scottish accent they act as if you talk greek

Also, keep in mind this shoot was when DeCaprio experienced the bizarre weather phenomenon called a Chinook. Warm air drops down the mountainside and the temp can change 30 degrees in an afternoon. Poor Leo was freaking out about climate change. He was just uneducated. It happens all the time for centuries.
I live three hours north of Calgary. It’s only really cold for a couple of weeks every winter. The rest of the time it’s quite tolerable and enjoyable.

Calgary is one of the happiest places I have been to in North America. It was obviously cold in the winter…but atmosphere, people and energy is always positive.

Much of what we picture as New York City or Los Angeles as depicted in movies is actually filmed in Toronto or Vancouver.
I believe Glasgow is also used as a stand-in for New York too
