I find that these smoky soft colors are really hard to find in retail options. Eileen Fisher does a great job in offering muted shades but for the most part, clothing options are flooded with brights and pastels and these select colors seem to be used more in the expensive ranges of designers if that makes sense.
I agree, muted colors aren’t popular with clothing brands. Black is ubiquitous, then usually the only other option is one trendy bright, warm color like yellow, orange or lime green! All of these look hideous on us summers🙂
I saw that you included Taylor Swift as an example of a Summer but I always thought she was a Spring! I thought that’s why she can pull off that bold red lip color :)
I would really appreciate a color class on choosing eyeglass frames. Based on what I have learned from you, I think I am a soft summer. I think my skin is more neutral, my eyes are green lined in dark blue, my hair is an ashy gray. Thanks for all your classes - I have learned so much about this new, older phase of my life and what to do to make the best of the new me.
My Summer typing recommended silver-toned jewelry, which I dutifully chose for two decades, but never really liked. I switched to gold and love it. Jewelry takes up so little space that I don’t think there’s enough of the warmer tone to make a big difference. Plus, as I said in another comment, I’m almost neutral-toned, only slightly cool. Plus, silver tarnishes, unlike gold. When we had those terrible wildfires here in Northern California from 2017 to 2022, every piece of my silver jewelry turned black, despite being stored in drawers or cabinets. We had the famous “Day Without Sun” when most of the sunlight was blocked out, tens of thousands here were late for work or school because the sun “never came up”. It was awful, everything everywhere was smoke-damaged, clothes, furniture, etc. Other days that late summer/autumn weren’t much better. It took me two years of evenings to polish it back to a usable condition. It didn’t work for all pieces, either, like the fine chains. There’s nothing like solid gold, it looks the same forever. Of course, it’s extremely expensive since the 2008 financial crisis because investors hoard gold as bullion in bank vaults. So, I can only afford a little tiny piece occasionally, and such delicate, small pieces don’t throw much color onto the skin. Above all, I love wearing pearls, which look fabulous on Summers. I think pearls look really pretty on all women.
Silver jewelry looks the best on me, I can’t wear regular gold, but I CAN pull off rose gold. I CAN pull off shockingly bright colors for clothes, but black, red, and orange look terrible on me. I CAN pull off peachy-orange in clothes though, and neon yellow also looks really good on me, but regular orange or regular yellow look awful on me. I was born with strawberry blonde hair that turned maroonish dark brown as an adult . Like for sure 100% I am a summer but I must be a weird summer or something, pastels and greys look amazing on me, except the really dark blackish grays look terrible on me. I CAN pull off bright pink, bright purple, and bright berry lipstick, I CAN also pull off a bright blue based red lipstick. Your analysis is confusing me because you say because of my hair color I must be a spring, but I CAN pull off ALL of the muted pastel summer colors, and I CAN also pull off the shockingly bright colors too. How?
I just absolutely LOVE your podcast, Sara and Lucinda! I think I am summer, cuz I am full of "ish" - greyish/bluish/greenish eyes . . ..med brownish/graying hair and cool skin. Anyway, you ladies have a way of simplifying the seasonal color theory that makes it so much more understandable. Thanks for your insights.
I’m a summer with pink skin and I dye my hair blue black and it’s breathtaking on me and I get compliments everywhere I go and it’s quite a contrast but almost pulls me into a winter tone.
I am without a doubt a summer, but a really ODD ksummer. I swear, I have zero “chroma”. However, too light, dusty pastels are terrible for me. I have to have just a bit deeper. My eyes can come off as charcoal. I looooove grey! Odd thing-a true TEAL and PEACOCK blue and cool browns look FANTASTIC! Yellow anything makes us look like a 16th century plague victim! 😂😂
What about Poc as summers? I am a soft summer with black hair and dark brown eyes. Many asians get typed as summers in the Korean or Japanese analyses❤ via the apps I’m always winter or autumn because they are not able to recognize nuance 😢
At our party for color analysis, the tie-breaker for my analyst was putting the aqua (pale turquoise) drape on me. Everyone went “wow - it looks like you have full makeup on”! It did make my youthful great skin look even smoother, brightened my eyes and brought out the pink-red tones of my lips and cheeks, it did look like the best natural makeup. It was the clincher for the analyst, who was having trouble determining if I was warm or cool-toned, I really am that close to neutral, but have little contrast and a dominantly soft characteristic. We had so much fun that day, only three of us had the analysis, but we made an outdoor girls party out of it! Ah, to be 21 again! I still love wearing aqua, but until 2024 I hadn’t seen this color in decades. It looks great on any summer. I just bought a turquoise item, but it really is a bit too strong for my delicate coloring.
Love a mum daughter duo! My mum and I have run our business together for 15 years now, so I always love to support other duos! ❤ I am a summer and sew my own clothes so these are helpful! Thanks for the video!
I am sooo glad that I found this video. My hair is white - no highlights or lowlights. Many of the videos that I've seen focus on salt and pepper as winter. I was dark haired . Now white. Many of the colors still are my best options.
Sara, you’re so smart to protect that beautiful skin, mine was like yours in youth, flawless. Everyone I met said “wow, what beautiful skin!” and I still get that comment occasionally. Daily, high-SPF sunscreen, always. I’m a geologist and quickly realized that if I didn’t protect my fair skin daily, I would look ancient by my mid-40s. Sun-exposure prevention works better than anything else for preventing aging, people always think I’m much younger than the 64 I am. Be sure to cover the neck, ears and décolletage area, too, the skin there is very thin and delicate. I see so many women my age whose faces look pretty good, but the wrinkled, spotted and leathery upper chest show their age very obviously. I also wear a wide-brimmed hat when outdoors, they help, too, and Polarized sunglasses. (Non-Polaroid sunglasses, those with just a dark tint cause more solar radiation to enter the eyes through dilated pupils and hence, cataracts). The three people I know who had cataract surgery all lost the vision in the eye they had “fixed”, no thanks! Protect your precious vision from the sun’s radiation! Plus, there is a lot of skin cancer in my family, and the incisions the surgeons have to make to remove it are quite deep and disfiguring, prevention is so much better. Yes, I really hate applying sunscreen, but I use it anyway. The oil-free SPF 50 or 70 ones are good.
I really like u guys n appreciated for all the knowledge. I have one question for "pastel" color. From my understanding, pastel is bright colors plus tint or white, which put it in Spring season. While Summer is bright colors with ashes or gray. So what does "pastel" really mean? Thx.
I used to be a soft summer but since I stopped dyeing my hair I look better in black and white. Did your palette not change towards winter, Lucinda, once your hair became pepper and white?
This “ish” comment makes so much sense! Also the best color on me is gray…. But I don’t have blonde hair. . That can still be summer? I look terrible if my hair gets colored and pulls any warmth.
Light summer here and loads of brights in my palette including lots from spring seeing as I am a transition. When I wear muted shades, I am totally washed out. I have also had a color analysis done and I can not only wear black very successfully, I can do it head to toe in velvet. The whole muted pastel thing is why I always rejected being a summer frankly but I know that I am one, just a different sort of one as so many of us are.
Can you help me to the right season? I have neutral olive skin tone (in summer more warm, in winter more cool), can wear silver and gold, but a greengold. Red and yellow gold not, low constrast, muted, mousy haire, brown eyes.. am I soft summer? Someties I think I am soft summer and soft spring.. is this possible? Thank you
Some confusion because my hair is silver gray on the top, front and mostly on the sides. Still some warm brown hair in the back. Eye color is light green with gold flecks. Eye brows are a cool/ash brown. Skin tone leans warm with some freckles. Where do I go with this?
I just had an epiphany. I never noticed that althought i know, that only cool haircolors work for me (i also can only wear silver jewelry), that however my natural hair color is dark blonde with a very slight red undertone (that was more visible when i was i child). How on earth does this work? 😅 my skin color is fair with redish undertones, i have hazel green eyes, my contrasts are low to medium and i am pretty light overall... any ideas what season i could be? I am kinda stuck 😅😅
When our Mom treated my sister and me, and herself, to a Color Me Beautiful analysis 40 years ago, they only typed the four seasons. I was typed as a Summer, and later subtyped myself as a Soft Summer, my overall characteristic is very Soft and I think I’m closer to a true neutral than many Summers. As it happens, I love wearing summer colors, especially soft white, taupe and pale cool pinks, greens and blues. Natural coloring: dark blonde to very light brown, naturally very streaky hair (every color from near-white to light brown in it), light brown brows and lashes, hazel eyes, very white skin with berry pink lips and cheeks. My eyes have dark greenish-gray rims, a lot of grayish-light-brown, and a few goldish flecks in them. People often ask me what color they are, which happens a lot with hazel eyes, because they often have two or three colors in the irises.
I get so confused with skin tone. Im yellowy in colour but people tell me that i have a cool skin tone. Yellow is meant to be warm? Wild. General consensus seems to be that i am a soft summer but i dont get it.
I have dark brown hair with redish undertones in the sun. My skin is pale. I can't wear warm brown colors ore to hard contrast. I gravitate to medium colors that's more soft toned. Purple, blue, light yellow, soft green etc I can figure out if I'm warm ore cold tone. Maby soft summer?
I am right on the border between summer and winter. I have been typed as a dark summer. I have salt and pepper hair, very cool toned skin and dark brown eyes, but the very bright winter shades are too much for me and the very light summer shades are too light for me.
Same! I’m self identified, but that’s been my experience anyway. I can’t go too dark or too light, I can’t go too bright or too soft. I’m decisively cool but everything else is very “mid” for me
There are limitations in the four season system. One is a home for us neutral folks, the other is anyone who isn’t of Northern European descent gets left out. Sara and I are working on a new palette system that will be all inclusive- stay tuned.
Sara and Lucinda do personalized Color Portfolios - you send us several photos head and shoulders and full length, we do a detailed color analysis in the twelve season palette, and return to you a portfolio of you image in various colors, right and wrong, along with additional information on your season, makeup colors and accessories. I am 70, with white hair and blue-green eyes. My skintone is warm, though. This was confirmed when a rose tint Clarins day cream just sat on my face looking odd. The apricot tint blends in perfectly
We are twins. I’m a summer with a skintone that takes a MAC NW shade. When I was young I took a cool foundation. I know, odd right? And my beautiful red haired daughter has a cool skin tone.
I’m pretty sold on being a summer. But i far prefer gold and this is the one thing that’s throwing me off. I’ve focused on warmer, golder tones my whole life and I’m just now making the switch to cool. But i still prefer gold jewelry on me. Does that make me a light spring? Or can i still be a true summer?
I think it’s appropriate to step back and confirm your season with regard to warm and cool. Try holding gray and gold under your chin- ask a friend which looks best.
I’m so stuck between summer or spring! I have blue/green eyes with a hint of gold/yellow flakes. My hair is dark ashy brown with gold highlights (natural). But my skin is definitely cooler, I have a pinkish undertone and look best in silver. Gold is awful! However I think I look good in neutral/watermark makeup maybe because of my eyes? Sooo confused. I volunteer to do a case study on me lol
My natural hair color is medium ash blond (cool) but I color it more of a golden blond (warm). My undertone seems to be neutral with a bit of ruddyness, and my eyes are green/gray. I have no idea what I am....I thought I was a light summer but now I have no idea since my hair is fakely warm (and it's very thick and long).
Trying to figure out what gray toner to use. Originally was brunette and having trouble figuring out the right shade of gray. Had colors done and was told I was "SUMMER" with clothing colors suggested as Blue, Soft, Smoky, Rosy"... but that isn't helping me figure out what type of light hair color to choose. I'm finding that hair stylists are not always clued in on the clothes/skin color analysis. Any tips for me?
Send us a photo Darla if you would like our opinion. Dark brown with no highlights is probably winter- and as a winter you are usually considered a "clear" meaning you can pull off a bolder palette than Lucinda can. Happy to take a look if it would be helpful. ColorClassInc@gmail.com
So, you mention at 5.3 that ‘ salt and pepper’ hair is winter. I worked out years ago that I’m a deep autumn ( dark hazel eyes, dark brown hair with reddish highlights in the sun..plus fushia looks horrible on me) , but now my hair is going ‘ salt and pepper’. Are you saying that I might now be a winter?? Thanks
Hi, Loving your videos. I am a 70 year old cool summer BUT I am not " sugar coated". My colouring is similar to you , Lucinda but my eyes are dark blue/ green/ gray. Aubergine is fab.on the eyes but I find that most mauve lipsticks pull warm on me. Best for me is " Faux " by MAC. Do you have any other suggestions ? Many thanx.
Is it possible to have been a Spring then as you age and your hair turns cooler white with no more gold tones that you are now a Summer? I'm in my late '70's, my complexion is ivory, green eyes and sandy white hair which used to be golden blonde in my youth. BTW I love your seafoam blue sweater. Could you let me know the brand and where you got it? Also love your lipstick color!!
Everyone is so unique but I would say when you look at all nationalities it’s more common to have opposites. If you have that check out the 6 dominant characteristics palette! We fall into the soft category.
Carole Jackson wrote a great book for a reference, “ Color Me Beautiful Makeup Book.” I bought that back in the 80’s & still use it as a reference. eBay has it cheap. 😉. I’ve always had chestnut medium Brown hair, Hazel eyes, & fair Irish skin. The neutral & warm tones look best on me. The blue veins just mean the skin there is thin & not really an indicator of what color/ Season you truly are. At almost 61 years old, I color my hair Auburn & get many compliments from strangers on my hair.❤
I'm in my 40s and learned I was a Summer back in the 90s. I also have dark green eyes (not hazel) like you both, which apparently is not very common--who knew! It was always "my normal," so I never thought much of it. LOL! I guess that makes it kinda cool. Anyway, I think it's so interesting that color analysis has become popular again--that's a good thing! Some tend to overcomplicate it, but once you understand things? It really simplifies and helps you make choices that feel more flattering for yourself. Yes, each of us can choose to wear what we want; however, understanding what looks best and why can be a game-changer. New sub and I can't wait to learn and recall some of the lessons from the past! Have a great day, ladies! 💜
Glad you mentioned lip colors because this has always been the hardest part of makeup for me. Dabbing and blotting is exactly how I approach lipstick, and I also try to keep it close to the hue of my natural color.
Makeup color names with “berry” in them are often good for Summers. My blush is “Strawberry” and my lip stain is “Berry”. These cool-toned pinks to reds are often called “Rose”, too. Of course, try everything on, but as a first cut, I often try those named after berries and roses first.
Yes, berries and plums are great but rosy pinks and also many reds turn orange on me. I'm looking into the possibility of olive times somewhere as a result.
Great video! I have dark brown hair, dark green eyes with a light olive skin colour. Would you say that I am a summer or winter? I think I am probably a winter but I would like to know your opinion.
I’m really puzzled. I’ve been typed as a winter. One of the colours in the palette is a mid value pink. Similar to the pink on the Jordan 1 mid fierce pink trainer, but not quite as neon/sugary/in your face. I have pajama bottoms in that colour and draped myself in natural light. I think it’s too bright for me and on the camera it pulls out every bit of discolouration in my skin. If I was a winter, would it look that bad on me? I also think I’m a pale olive.
I am a true summer with brown hair, dark hazel greenish brownish, eyes and fair skin tone. What do you do if you don’t gravitate towards the aesthetics of summer. I tend to like a age clothing style. How do you incorporate an edgy style with soft summer?
Full disclosure, the summer options were limited. As a summer, I think I mentioned in the video that they lacked summer options. Buxom had the best ever summer shade called Dolly, they discontinued it, brought out a similar shade called Dolly Doll, not the same at all and the product melts off your mouth in two minutes. So, all that to say we are working to find a well balanced line with great quality. Stick with us, more to come.
Im between a summer and a winter and an autimn lol... I have cool toned light olive skin, medium neutral toned brown hair, autumn brown eyes with flecks of gold and red.... I would say i lean cool/neutral, soft and deep. Not sure where that keaves me for color analysis. I got offically draped in person as a summer but she did say i have autumn eyes
Technically ash is a green undertone (according to hair colorists) which is the opposite of red. So do you mean ash brown instead of auburn (which is by definition red)? Or just that the auburn hair appears desaturated?
I've been trying to analyse myself for a year... thought that I might be a summer but it's been so difficult because I fall into that "ish" category 😂. I also have grey/gold eyes (that look green), ashy golden dark blonde hair, pale biege skin, and gravitate towards greys/cool biege/pastels. I can't pull off bright colours, or very warm colours like orange, yellow and warm green. The only difference is that I get complimented a LOT when wearing bright red and emerald green, and pull of gold better than silver. Maybe I lean neutral? This was so helpful! Would be good if you could do a video on ideas for summer hair colours ❤
Check out this video 😉 you might just find your answer! SOFT? 6 Dominant Characteristics Color Analysis Explained th-cam.com/video/9WZq1fihkT8/w-d-xo.html
We were doing the simple Four Seasons Color Analysis, Summer as light, cool and low contrast. If we were talkiing the twelve palette system I would be a soft summer.
I find that these smoky soft colors are really hard to find in retail options. What id your “pepper” is medium warmish brown & the “salt” is white?
This is tricky, would you send a photo to colorclassinc@gmail.com
I saw that you included Taylor Swift as an example of a Summer but I always thought she was a Spring! I thought that’s why she can pull off that bold red lip color :)
I thought that too.
Me too! I’ve seen her typed as a Spring by a few different colour analysts
Taylor is confirmed a spring, not every colour analyst is made equal!
I would really appreciate a color class on choosing eyeglass frames. Based on what I have learned from you, I think I am a soft summer. There are limitations in the four season system. One is a home for us neutral folks, the other is anyone who isn’t of Northern European descent gets left out. Sara and I are working on a new palette system that will be all inclusive- stay tuned.
These look like soft summer colors to me. I think Im a summer but those look too muted for me since I dont think Im a soft summer.
This is the best video I've seen breaking this down. Thank you!
Fab colour on you Lucinda ❤️

Colour tone does not change
I’m so confused. Sometimes I feel like I’m autumn and sometime spring.
That blue top is gorgeous on you
I swear I am a summer, but my hair is red brown, and my eyes are starburst hazel green, but I am a summer
Maybe soft summer cuz we can be slightly warmer than true summer, or maybe you are soft autumn
@@nekoupsidedown4273 Interesting thanks for the information.
Lovely mother and daughter cooperation ! Well done 🎉
Thank you from a summer. 😎
Thank you for dropping in!
Send some photos to ColorClassInc@gmail.com- we will see what we can do!
What about black hair?
Sara's skin is beautiful. A great payoff for not tanning.
She’s luminous- I’m her proud Mom so I say that haha.
So you're doing summer cool ?
Trying to figure out what gray toner to use. Originally was brunette and having trouble figuring out the right shade of gray. Had colors done and was told I was "SUMMER" with clothing colors suggested as Blue, Soft, Smoky, Rosy"... but that isn't helping me figure out what type of light hair color to choose. I'm finding that hair stylists are not always clued in on the clothes/skin color analysis. Any tips for me?
I consider myself cool soft and medium because my hair is dark brown with no red or gold highlites.
Many thanx.
Dusty colors with summer. Faded looking up top. Hair & eyes (?).
May I ask about the lipstic of Summer Lady here? You borh look fenomenal ! I've just discovered I am a true / soft summer type 😊❤
Because Summers are soft, can we also, or conversely, be bright? Also, can Summers be olive?
Is it possible to have been a Spring then as you age and your hair turns cooler white with no more gold tones that you are now a Summer? I'm in my late '70's, my complexion is ivory, green eyes and sandy white hair which used to be golden blonde in my youth. BTW I love your seafoam blue sweater. Could you let me know the brand and where you got it? Also love your lipstick color!!
Is it common to have a cool hair tone with warm tone skin and vice versa?
So what you're saying is that a gold ring with beautiful diamonds is special for summer!?
What do you think is the best for a brown/honey eye summer? I loved you video, and your voices are amusing to listen
Can you be a summer with yellow to your skin? I’m Armani luminous silk 4.5
Hair color can be changed. Does that mean that the season changes? What if I am not cool or warm, but neutral?
Or a yellow hue😊

i love you both and your content
I really enjoy your videos. Unfortunately, I never knew my season for certain, and now I am all mixed up since hair/skin changes from aging. Ugh!
Stay with us - you will be sure in no time!
loved this chat! Thank you :))
Great video! I have dark brown hair, dark green eyes with a light olive skin colour. Would you say that I am a summer or winter? I think I am probably a winter but I would like to know your opinion.
Check out the Aligned Lover and Sarah Novio, you are likely a summer! Just not many examples for olives or brown skinned summer celebs.
If you like send us a photo at ColorClassInc@gmail.com, we can give a better opinion that way.
I am a true summer with brown hair, dark hazel greenish brownish, eyes and fair skin tone. What do you do if you don’t gravitate towards the aesthetics of summer. I tend to like a age clothing style. How do you incorporate an edgy style with soft summer?
Personally (as a summer) I borrow a handful of Spring shades and gravitate to the universal colors, teal, watermelon etc.
This was so helpful. Thank you.
Can the winters use some summer colors from the summer color palette, like the darker ones?
Not really. It’s not about the tone but about the pigment or color purity. Summer colors are muted, winter’s are closer to primary.
These summer colours look like soft summer or even soft autumn to me... the real summer colour are much cooler than this.
Medium brown hair, cool or warm?
@@ColorClassInc I would say neutral cool as well, no red or yellow tones on my hair
Okay but auburn hair can look red in the sun even though it has an ashy cool undertone
Technically ash is a green undertone (according to hair colorists) which is the opposite of red. So do you mean ash brown instead of auburn (which is by definition red)? Or just that the auburn hair appears desaturated?
@@ColorClassInc I mean it only looks red in the sun. In the shade it looks like a dark ash blonde (or maybe light ash brown?)

Are you talking cool or warm??? Summer what????
She said Summer was light, cool and low contrast.
We were doing the simple Four Seasons Color Analysis, Summer as light, cool and low contrast. If we were talkiing the twelve palette system I would be a soft summer.
I seem to be a soft summer, however I also look good in a darker navy. Does that indicate that I’m not really a soft summer?
