It's 2022 as I write this and I can't help but think that this video was in the good old days when it all started to unravel. Now we have surpassed five of the nine planetary boundaries, an addition of two more in only 12 additional years. It's hard to not think we are doomed. I try to keep an open mind about how we could turn it all around at the last second, but I don't believe we will. We are not making the kind of sacrifices necessary, and I don't think we will make those sacrifices until it is far too late (if it isn't already). We are living in the end of days for our civilization.
So you're vegan, right? You mention making sacrifices, and sacrificing taste pleasure to minimise your impact on the environment is a pretty obvious sacrifice, yes?

@@Danycuraj No I do not troll. I am not interested in overpopulation the planet like most people are. I do not even understand the drive to overpopulate the planet by popping them out. It must be something one is born with. Not everyone has babies on their brains 24/7. Some of us, like me, care about those already alive more than creating copies of ourselves. In fact, having a kid is an almost sickening idea to me, but I do understand many apparently feel something different than I do.
A lot of things are changing in the right direction too. For example, it seems we are pretty close to have Nuclear Fusion energy (by 2024), if that happens, that would add the best energy source ever inveted by human kind!!! (yes, it's a lot better than nuclear fision). Investment in the green transition is growing fast, solar panels tecnology is also founding new better ways, and battery too (diferent options reduce the preasure on resources and production chain). ♻🌱
What a wonderful speech. No hyperbole, no hard-sell, what more do you want than pictures of the horrendous changes that are happening? How much more motivation than we need to act now? The "leave things alone and they will be fine" mentality hasn't worked for 20+ years. Why do people think it would work now? I hope people like Johan will continue to bring innovations to people everywhere!

It's funny how he talks about changing paradigms and social change, but he failed to mention the one thing that might do most of the things needed to happen: changing the world's economic model and stop sacrifying ourselves and the planet for profit... 11 years after and we haven't reach the turning point yet.

Very very important talk! It's so many variables people dont think of when it comes to system changes. If we continue like we do, endlessly consuming and creating masses of waste without thinking about stability, sustainablity and efficency: the ecosystems resilience will shut down completely.
Hence one of the many reasons my support the Venus project and the zeitgeist movement.

One of the most profound points that Rockström and his diagram makes is that carbon counting is not enough. We can meet carbon targets and still expire of thirst and drought.
I have read into both the Venus Project and The Zeitgeist Movement and would like to hear why you believe these to be attainable options for our sustainable future. I am not by any means trying to discourage said organizations, I am simply curios as to your ideas on the matter.

Wow, I'm so glad I knew this in 2010.. that's.. Wait, it's 2018!... all we need to do now is make that time machine.
Technology only works when we use it efficiently. What form of energy gives the maximum return on investment when materials and energy to produce that technology is considered? Some that are considered "Green" might be the same sort of green trade off as that found between the plastic and paper bags. Back in the day paper bags were a nasty thing and we went plastic to save the forests, It turns out plastic has a worse impact than paper.
We need to work the numbers to help our emotion do the correct thing.

I'm really afraid for the loss of biodiversity. Think about it, it went from 0-60 (so to speak) faster than any other problem.
We need to eat low on the food chain, reverse deforestation which will act as a carbon sink, reduce the chemical fertilizers. #ClimateVegan #ClimateHealers

The thing that annoys me about these environment talks is that they talk forever about things that we have all heard that now have a lessened effected. But what I want to know the most is exactly what I can do to help the planet. And I don't mean, "Switch to CFLs."
Rockström is better than most scientists (who are specialists and rarely think systemically). But he does fail in the way that many scientists do -- show their discoveries and offer no actions. The biggest "action" takeaway from their paper is that aerosols and chemical boundaries can't be measured -- so quick, let's measure them! We need more research! Yes, please do, scientists; that's what you're good at. Unfortunately, the baton for action is picked up by non-scientific people like me -- people with an agenda. #ClimateVegan :)
Changing light bulbs is symbolic of the extremely minimal change of personal habits encouraged by most environmental NGOs and government departments with "environment" in their title. Our society is prepared to march to our oblivion because we are addicted to comfort, and we are encouraged in this behaviour by our military industrial complex that believes in infinite economic growth, and by corporate interests who will block the truth from reaching the mainstream. We can solve the climate crisis by eating plants. Proof: #lifestyleCarbonDividend
Don't have children. That's one thing you can do. Talk about overpopulation to other people. That's another thing you can do and make them aware of the global problems, that you know about. Of course you can do much more than this, but i think we really need to start thinking about a smaller human population. Hopefully we'll understand that we're too many before nature takes over and will show it to us the hard way.
There are so many problems, that i'm afraid it's too complicated for many people to understand what to do. A smaller population size tackles all of those problems at once.
@@ClimateveganOrg are you an organic farmer? Surely you're aware of the effects of pesticides and mono cropping? Looking at the data of the global ecological footprint, it's really not going to make much difference if everyone stopped eating meat and only ate vegetables.
@@victoralba2988 Are you joking? Cattle farming is basically the sole reason why the amazon is being cut down. Go look up how much food it takes to raise animals and transform them into meat - it's a factor somewhere between 20 and 40x as much land wasted when you eat animals vs. plants.
And the thing about ecosystem is they are dynamic. You pull out the wrong blocks and the whole thing can fall down. Ecosystems involve everything interconnected, it's kinda like janga I guess haha.

So basically he is saying that we have the solutions to the crisis already, but the people need to realize that we need to utilize them as fast as possible.

In response to his concluding statement, maybe I wasn't paying enough attention to the solutions he described in the latter part of the talk, but where does "science say" that we can "collaborate globally" around these issues? I don't think countries can actually agree to make the changes we need.
We do not think he concluded that science says so. We feel that his conclusion calls for better and more sincere collaboration between countries. If all countries realized these effects and consciously attended to these based on the peculiarity of their case, such all-round efforts would go a long way. The economics of profit, however, militates against this.

His initial Malthusian drivel almost caused me to thumb down and ignore the rest. Fortunately he pulled it out by talking about many great and simple innovations that prove that there is more than enough for as far as we can see into the future. Quit screaming the sky is falling and just do the things that produce more and everything will be great. Hooray for abundance.
@WyldOrbit Try "not ready yet, but eventually promising". We need better battery technology if we're going to use technologies, but it's exciting to think that we might be very near having affordable, workable replacements for fossil fuels.

I agree that communism has not existed as it was originally intended.
After reading more and more about these topics, I have come to realize (in my humble opinion of course) that anarcho-communism or anarcho-sindicalism might be the "flexible" all-encompassing system that will do the job to free the world economy. People join voluntary (non-profit) associations all the time and they work.

@WyldOrbit Plastic is oil, and you can't use water for fuel. You can use energy to convert water to hydrogen, and then use it later, but its very dangerous, and you still need to get your energy from somewhere else to begin with. The truth is, oil is an extremely effecient energy source (and co2 is the only byproduct), thats why we are so dependant on it.

China claims to be a developing country, which is reasonable. They do do quite a bit for other countries but the amount of cock up they're capable of at home is just remarkable.

@reapfreak So then it would stand to reason that our issue here is not that the presenter is "emotionally pandering" or spewing untrue things, but that you are in need of a basic high school science lesson to educate you as to why the continuous increase in temperature and destruction of ecosystems will affect weather and bio systems leading to the eventual deterioration of the place we live. Which is humorously the part of this that is entirely undisputed by scientists and the government.

Equal money is in fact about guaranteeying everyone has good enough food -- and propper education. Equal money will stop wars -- because wars exist for control of resources - to provide the resources of the conquered territoty to the victorious. Therefore - with equal money - the resouces will be equally shared according to necessity.

Many ecologists and environmental activist told the politicians and economists the threats to us from over exploitation of the ecosystem biophere. Profit and greed dominates still.
We should be careful about our impact on the planet but I think we naturally are because our well being is at stake.

@reapfreak If you're really so selfish that you need something to affect you or humanity before you consider it a "problem" and the death of these life forms alone doesn't make it one then let me make it clear. Without some of these life forms we cannot survive. They turn the air we breathe out back into air we breathe in. Some are our food, others are food for those that are our food. That's just the starter, others with more detailed knowledge can fill you in on the rest.

Obviously we cannot create a system without money. We use what we have - we use money as the means of communication where all life is valued EQUALY -- this is the point: EQUALITY, Not money.
We can use money as a means to make sure everyone has enough to LIVE.

The answer of course is education. Stats show that educated families have less children.

The nitrogen and phosphorous cycles have been pushed into unknown territory because of the fertilization of monocultured crops grown to feed the animals we eat. Rockström says we need more forests, not less -- allow me to translate that into stopping the #1 cause of deforestation and desertification -- animal agriculture. If humans decided to eat plants all forests could be regrown as in 1800, and the carbon sequestered to 1750 levels! (google "lifestyle carbon dividend").
