Thank you for the review. However I must say that the pictures are part of the charm in the book and also helped me to transport myself to Johnathan's reality. I won this book as a 15 year old in an essay competition and have it with me to this date. I am over 50 years now.

When I started reading this book first time, I too discarded this book without reading it completely but now when I read it second time, this time completely, I got to know the essence of it. It's one of the most beautiful ways in which purpose of LIFE is described!

It was Nietzsche who propounded the idea of man and superman. Though the Nazis misunderstood the term and used it to declare Aryan supremacy, there is a possibility of man going beyond man and a bird going beyond a bird and becoming a super bird. Gandhiji teaches us about Nara, narottama and Narayana. Sage Valmiki asks Devarshi Narada about narottama and he speaks the name of Rama. The are two paths-one horizontal and the other vertical. Aahara(food),nihara(defecation),vihara(play),nidra(sleep)and maithuna(sexual union) are characteristicks of the horizontal path whereas in the vertical path a every moment is learning with satori alertness .For most other seagulls wings are a means for earning food and comforts.Jonathan is learning to fly which is a process and an art requiring many years of hard practice. Eric Fromm speaks of this process in the 'Art of Loving'.Just flapping the wings makes you tired and soaring is an art and quite effortless and has the flow and felicity of Tao. We flap our wings and get tired. Like the flight of Jonathan our life should be effortless .Dogmas and traditions are forcing us to cling to the horizontal plane. You should transcend it all perhaps at the cost of alienation and ostracizing. In the 'Bridge Across for Ever 'Bach tells the story of a river weed which is taught traditionally to fight against the current by clinging hard to the rocks. One day our hero weed loosens his grip and suddenly he experiences the enlightenment flowing with the river into the depth and infinity of the ocean. Jonathan is an enlightened bird and beyond all orthodoxy and value systems. His wings have merged with the Sky and hence infinite. Like fables of Aesop, Panchatantra and Hitopadesa, Jonathan is man in a bird's dress. Higher truths sound simple when spoken by a bird.

A short and crisp review. Although I would like to disagree with thwo points.
    1. Technical words rather made it easy to comprehend and imagine the flight that Jonathan took to learn those techniques. May be I am an engineer so I found them apt but it cdnt be more accurate than that.
    2. Pictures. I found them rather as a que to picture myself as seagull and understand his story even better. To remind me that how seagull would have felt during different scenarios and all.

This is not meant to be mean... I used to have a hard time listening to Indian speakers. Nice people, but I just couldn't understand them. Then, a few months ago, I was hired at a technology company where 90 percent of the people were either from India or in India (Hyderabad). The CEO is Indian, my supervisor is Indian, and the people I supervise and/or work with are Indian. Man, it was a rough first few months. But now I've finally picked up an "ear" for the accent. Like Jonathan, I kept at it. That's good because now I could listen to, understand and appreciate this very good review, whereas before, I might have just stopped listening.

I should appreciate your effort. But you have missed the point. This book teaches you to find the spiritual you. Look at statements like "No Jonathan there is no such place, and it is not a time. Heaven is being perfect." .....then .. "You will begin to touch heaven, Jonathan, in the moment that you touch perfect speed. And that isn't flying a thousand miles per hour .....any number is a limit and perfection does not have limits. Perfect speed my son is being there. Well, this can differently be said as "being perfect is being everywhere and everywhen."
That is being Omnipresent in time and space.

Nicely reviewed. The message in the book is quite is profound and pity those that don't appreciate it's significance. Unfortunatey, I guess, not averyone is meant to soar above life's garbage tip.....even when the message is placed in front of them.

I just finished this inspirational book. I am so happy to have picked up this book. Apart from the lesson that one has to be a go-getter and many lines similar, the biggest appeal for me was 'give the knowledge back to society' as you have said, 'use your experience to teach them what you were taught earlier'. This message sets this book apart from any other inspiration book. Thanks for your review.
