    As a 12 year GWoT (Global War on Terrorism) veteran, I can testify that Shikishima's PTSD and Survivor's Guilt is super-realistic. Nightmares, tremors, and hallucinations are a very real thing for many returning Veterans. It takes YEARS of therapy and help to recover from War. I hate War. I hope I am never forced to kill again. Support wounded Veterans, please!

    Godzilla is a territorial animal and only fights back when humans come in and attack him., but after being affected by an atomic bomb test explosion, he regarded all mankind as an existential threat and began to actively attack.
    This Godzilla has many connection to the first Godzilla(1954), both victims and horrors of mankind.

    Toho's Godzilla is not the Godzilla of Legendary's Monster-Verse. This Godzilla is not meant to bring "balance" to the Earth. You're confusing Godzillas. This version of Godzilla is the living manifestation of the atomic bomb, consumed by rage, driven to kill and destroy. It isn't the ally of humanity or the friend of other (future) kaiju.

    I love Shikishima's character arch: a failed kamikaze pilot returned home in disgrace, everyone dumps everything on him and he feels the extreme weight of his shame, meets Noriko and Akiko and starts taking care of them (while still dealing with the shame), and finally regains his honor and his life in the final confrontation (and shows what a fearless fighter pilot he really was!) and comes home with a real reason to live; Noriko and Akiko (who was soooo adorable, btw!)
    Like Shin Godzilla, ToHo brings Godzilla back to what he originally was: an enemy of Man. a mindless creature bent on senseless destruction; a metaphor for war itself, and for Godzilla; the threat of nuclear war. I thought Shin Godzilla was the scariest incarnation of him since the original, but I'm mistaken, THIS is clearly the scariest incarnation of Godzilla! maybe half the size of Shin as well as Legendary, but the power of his ranged attack... worse than anything else ever done!

    I love Godzilla's orgin and what the creature actually stands for: The consequences of using nuclear weapons.
    Godzilla originally wasn't a protector of anyone or anything. He was actually the terrifying result that people thought would happen if we all just recklessly used nuclear weapons. In the 1954 film it was the first Godzilla film and served as a strong reminder.
    Later films would then turn Godzilla into more of a protector or one to keep balance later (in my opinion because Godzilla became so popular)
    However Godzilla originally wasn't a protector. He actually was like this Godzilla and I think that played a big role into why Godzilla Minus One became such a great film. With amazing music and storyline it also followed the original origins of Godzilla.

    Godzilla Minus One (2023) is the best Godzilla film ever made. The film is a fitting, loving tribute to Godzilla’s 70th anniversary made by people with great reverence for the 1954 original. Godzilla Minus One is testament to the talent and dedication of director Takashi Yamasaki, his crew and wonderful cast. The film has great storytelling, visual effects and fine acting with characters that truly resonate with audiences. Performances by leads Ryunosuke Kamiki (Kōichi Shikishima) and Minami Hamabe (Noriko Ōishiwere) excellent. The film features the coolest and most terrifying Godzilla we have ever seen - an unstoppable force of nature that can annihilate everything in its path. Godzilla Minus One fully deserved every award it won, especially Best Visual Effects at the 96th Academy Awards.

      Meh. Good writing, great directing, but I just can't stand how goofy this version of Godzilla looks. From the moment he's hopping around on the beach like a big Pokémon to the the way his neck snaps back like a baby bird when he uses his atomic breath to how enormous his legs are compared to the rest of his body. I can't argue that it's a good movie, but I stand firm when I say this version of Godzilla himself looked ridiculous and not frightening at all. I almost laughed every time he was on screen.

    This movie was so good because unlike many modern Godzilla films, it's more than just a monster. It represents atomic chaos, the lingering effects of war, Shikishima's guilt and trauma, Japan's devastation and the aftermath of a ruling class that sacrificed ordinary people for 'honour'.
    It's a redemption movie on so many levels.

  • @BigSplenda1885

    The reason Godzilla is so angry and destructive in this one is because he's a metaphor for the nuclear bombs after WWII, which was the origin of the idea of original Godzilla in 1954

    • @mattrasp1615
      @mattrasp1615 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      He’s not destructive because he’s a metaphor. That’s just wrong. He is destructive because he’s a massive predator enhanced by nuke testing and still has natural animal tendencies for an irritated species. Him being the way he is because he has to be is real short sighted perspective. While obviously the nuclear message is there in -1, he represents a different metaphor anyway for the story.

  • @RealBLAlley
    @RealBLAlley 27 วันที่ผ่านมา +6

    Godzilla starts as a territorial animal defending his home, which happened to be Odo Island (just like in the original Gojira from 1954, which you should watch). Unlike the original, here he's still just an animal who is later affected by atomic testing.
    The story takes place in Tokyo, where the destruction was caused by the firebombing raids in March of 1945. Ironically, those raids killed more people than the atomic bombs.
    Godzilla's movement is actually far more realistic compared to the other movies. He starts out small and agile, then in the first encounter he's much larger but he's still fairly capable, even using his arms. In his final form he's mutated to the point he can't really use his arms and is so heavy he can barely move while on land. One of my criticisms of the Legendary version is that they made Godzilla absurdly huge yet depict him as being extremely agile, which is anti-gravity BS (and forced them to make Kong just as absurdly huge).
    The Shinden fighter was a real prototype, as were the ships depicted. They did their homework. More than most films.

    Godzilla has always been represented as an iconic villain reflecting on the bombings of hiroshima and nagaskai in japan.

      That’s new to me, I only recently started watching Godzilla films and I started with the Monster-verse version so I thought it was just supposed to be good but causing destruction while trying to bring balance. But this movie gave me the “other” side of it. Also I was not aware of the symbolism of it as well and I’m glad I saw this movie because my eyes have been opened.
      I’m looking forward to seeing more of Godzilla.

      There are 3 main eras of Godzilla films, Showa/Heisei/Reiwa, and Big G takes on a different role in each era. Sometimes he is the protector of earth and humanity, sometimes he is the product of human hubris and disdain for nature, and many points in between. What Godzilla represents and how he is portrayed is very reflective of the state of Japanese affairs during that timeframe. He is an embodiment of the nations struggle, be it with nuclear bombs/testing, bureaucratic finger pointing in times of crises, and much more. Big G is so much more than just big monster fights, I hope you enjoy watching the classics!

    • @TherapyGel
      @TherapyGel 29 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      @@AffanReactsHonestly, I see it as she still didn't have a will to live. When she was about to give up before Koichi showed up, she never really shook that feeling. Idk, for her to think to push Koichi and then move back in the opposite direction shows intention to me. A film so carefully shot wouldn't leave in such a peculiar action by a character if it didn't mean something.
      Also I think Noriko was selfless when she did this. She knew the guilt Koichi carries. She knew that for him to achieve his ultimate goal would mean him dying. But she knew that if she died, Koichi would do what it takes to survive for the sake of Akiko. She saw it as; one of them had to die, and she couldn't bear for it to be Koichi.

  • @Airwolf515
    @Airwolf515 18 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

    There were a lot of emotional scenes in this film. Akiko losing her mother twice in her short life. Veterans trying to heal their scars from war and dealing with survivor's guilt, especially for soldiers or airman who were given the task to go on a one way mission to destroy the enemy and save their country and their "God" Emperor.
    When Akitsu "The Captain" and Noda-sama refused to let The Kid to go with them on the mission, I felt this was their, the old men, personal closure to the war. They had seen too many young men sent off on a suicide mission and die in vain. They wanted to at least save one young man. From what I remembered, the dialogue from the scene was great and hit me hard:
    Soundtrack: 🎵Pride🎵 playing
    Kid: Why won't you allow me to go with you? Because I'm not a veteran.
    Capt: (Kid) Because.......not having been war is something to be proud of. (Noda-sama & Akitsu start walking away)
    Kid: Please take me with you. I beg you. I WANT TO DEFEND MY COUNTRY!!!....We are a team aren't we! WHY ARE YOU LEAVING ME?!!!!...CAPTAIN! NODA-SAMA!
    Capt: We leave you......the future (speaking softly).
    Having the scene I mentioned above and the preceding scene where Mr. Noda was replying to a subordinate who interpreted his order for everyone "to spend time with their families" as "be prepared" for your death were heavy. The tune of the soundtrack "Pride" and Noda's soft approach in his speech set an emotional tone. He knows everyone in the briefing room had lost something and scarred by the war. He wanted to change the narrative and let them know this mission, although dangerous, was not a suicide mission. Unlike the wartime, they were armed with the right tools to increase their success and come HOME ALIVE.
    Mr. Noda: Come to think of it this country has treated life far too cheaply. Poorly armored tanks. Poor supply chains resulting in half of all deaths from starvation and disease. Fighter planes built without ejection seats and finally, kamikaze and suicide attacks. That's why this time I'd take pride in a citizen led effort that sacrifices no lives at all! This next battle is not one waged to the death, but a battle to live for the future.
    One last thing, the soundtrack doesn't get praised enough.

    I love the foreshadowing of the deep sea fish coming up to the surface too fast so their stomachs explode out of their mouths because of the pressure.
    Similarly, they concoct a plan to use the force of nature against Godzilla who is also a force of nature. But also an unknown element. Born of nuclear energy. Will the pressure of nature's force crush him? Great plot!

    Godzilla in his original Japanese iteration is the analogy for war and the atomic bomb. He's purely destructive and chaotic, causes endless suffering and there's no way to get rid of him for good. He always comes back. Just like wars. All this balance and Gozilla being a good guy crap came from Hollywood. That's not to say the monster verse movies aren't fun, but that's not really how Godzilla was conceptualised. So, when you ask why he's doing what he's doing.. Why do we drop nukes and start wars with one another? Territory? Resources? Dominance? All the things Godzilla and every other animal fights over. Just not as destructively as humans. Japan came up with Godzilla as a way to deal with and rationalise the aftermath of WWII.
    As for his movement, it's perfect. Again, you've been spoiled by Hollywood lol. This movie is a love letter to the original. Godzilla's size would account perfectly for his cumbersome movement. He waa much more agile at the beginning when he was smaller. However, Godzilla's movement is the embodiment of the slow but inevitable march of war.
    As for the deep sea fish. They've been killed by Godzilla's radiation and movements underwater. They've risen to the surface so quickly that the decompression forces their stomachs out of their mouths.

    The Film and Character has often been branded as an imitation of Godzilla. Godzilla has been considered a filmographic metaphor for the United States, as well as an allegory of nuclear weapons in general. The earlier Godzilla films, especially the original, portrayed Godzilla as a frightening nuclear-spawned monster.

    This film has stayed with me. I fell in love with all of the human players, Norda

    Fun fact: Takashi Yamazaki the director of this film is a big fan of Godzilla, he also featured Godzilla as cameo in "Always: Sunset on Third Street" on 2005 and he is the director of "Godzilla the Ride: Giant Monsters Ultimate Battle" which have same design for Godzilla in this film

    Such a great movie. Takashi yamazaki took what made the 1954 Gojira movie (you should watch it) and made it even more amazing. Also the second inspiration to this movie is Godzilla Mothra and King Ghidorah giant monsters all out attack. (You should watch it). 5:22 they were on his territory. 25:43 it's obvious why Godzilla is attacking people cause he was hit with a nuclear bomb. 25:48 that's the Monsterverse Godzilla thing not ToHo. Don't mix up their motivations

      This is a really good film.
      I’m mixing stuff up obviously cuz we saw Godzilla being hit with nukes to be charged up, so I just assumed Godzilla liked that cuz it needed the radiation. I thought it just came to this region for the radiation cuz that area was hit with nukes. So this Godzilla is just an evil monster?

    What you don’t understand is, the first Godzilla movie was 1954 barely a few years after the atomic bombs were dropped on Japan. Godzilla is a symbol of nuclear war, nature enraged by what humanity has unleashed on itself. In the American Legendary films, he is a protector of the world, but the original Japanese concept of Godzilla is that he is the embodiment of nuclear devastation.

    Another heavy scene: Akitsu was angry at Shikishima for not marrying Noriko and now he wanted a plane so he can just avenge her and die. After Shikishima explained his burden, Akitsu, who was ready to punch or physically hurt him, backed off because he understood that no one can force Shikishima to come to terms of his burden.
    Akitsu: You just want to avenger her (Noriko)......You should have married her before. You knew how she felt.
    Shikishima: Don't you think I wanted that?
    Akitsu: Then why didn't you?
    Shikishima: Because... my war isn't over yet

    This film can be said to be a remake that follows the theme of the first Godzilla film from 1954. And after the war, Director Tsuburaya created Godzilla, a kaijyu, a creation of God, to represent the threat of nuclear weapons and nuclear bombs. So he is not a saurus or a monster, but a kaijyu born of God. This film is a drama about the threat of Godzilla, who became the embodiment of nuclear weapons, and the struggle of humans desperately trying to survive after the defeat. Director Yamazaki has brought to life the passion that Tsuburaya put into Godzilla in a drama that returns to Godzilla's origins, in which Godzilla attacks (-1) a defenseless Japan (0) just after the war. The theme of this film is to live no matter how hard it is. In Japanese, it’s called "生きて抗えIkite agarae".
    When we talk about Kaijyu Godzilla, which was born in Japan, I hope that we will remember that he is a symbol of nuclear terror and war, and that he will be passed on to future generations. thanks from🇯🇵 Sorry my bad grammar 🙇🏻

    I think the large Gojira's walk was intentional. If you recall, when they were small, movement was rather smooth. I think the size/weight increase, and how its limbs evolved, made moving on land tricky. Have you not seen the 1954 film? That was my fav, and none came close, until this one.

    This Godzilla is an evil, pissed off monster that wants to inflict as much destruction on humans as possible. The reason is; it knows humanity is responsible for the bomb that changed him to what he is. It was excruciatingly painful, making his body grow far larger than ever designed for.
    So now he is in constant pain, and yes, his own atomic blast severely injures him. So, for all the pain and misery we inflicted on him, he has a grudge against humans.
    This one also has nothing to do with any other Godzilla movie ever made. But it honors the original 1954 movie where Godzilla was evil.

      @AffanReacts That's the cool thing about this franchise, it literally encompasses the crazy and silly, to the dark and terrifying. The original 1954 movie "Godzilla," was very dark, very serious. Later in the 50s, it was re-edited for the US and called, "Godzilla: King of the Monsters." It was kind of dumbed down for US audiences.
      Then, the very next movie started the turn to the silly Showa era of the 60s and 70s where Godzilla is a protector. Basically made him kid friendly. This is where the Monsterverse takes its queues from. Started out very serious in 2014, now we get the insanely fun ride of GxK, PLUS we get the epicness of GM1 too.
      It's like apples and oranges, they're both fruits, both Godzilla, but both are very different, while both being very good.

    In my experience watching every Godzilla movie, I've found there are only 3 truly good ones. The original 1954 Godzilla (the original japanese cut), Shin Godzilla, and Godzilla Minus One. These three are the must watch entries in the franchise. The rest of them are varying degrees of silly and stupid, sometimes fun, often dull. One exception is Godzilla vs Biollante, which is definitely stupid, but VERY fun. The Hollywood films, including the recent "Monsterverse" entries are quite simply dog sh*t.

      I agree monster-verse doesn’t come close to this one and am very much looking forward to seeing Shin Godzilla and Original Godzilla but I must add, monster-verse does serve it’s purpose, a lot of people go to movies simply to escape this world and the problems that come with it and experience something fun and crazy. Monster-verse provides that, so not comparable to this but it has a place.

If I remember right, Godzilla was originally the symbolism of the atomic bombings, the feeling of helplessness etc. after the war. As there was nothing they could do in reality, these characters can do nothing against Godzilla. He was neither good nor bad, just a force of nature like a hurricane. Great comment about how the movie makes you care about the people. It's a wonder Hollywood can't seem to do the same.

      Wrong. The movement is slow because he is hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of thousands of tons of meat, bond and flesh. Physics doesn’t allow that amount of mass to move quickly. In the city he turns “fast” because he is pivoting. He’s faster in the sea because he swims just like some South American lizards do in the ocean when they chill underwater for 20 minutes eating plant growth off of rocks, They swim exactly the same.
      They took reality of our world and physics into play.
