WTF, South Africa is a success story of FIFA. All stadiums still in operation and hosting many sports codes and events not to mention improve infrastructure. All the fancy editing and figures but your information is wrong 👎
It's only bad if you have to build the stadiums. If your a country like the United States you have a lot of football stadiums already built to host the world cup and the supporting infrastructure like hotels in cities to make due. I think this is why the world cup after Qatar was awarded to North America cause everything is already built basically.
It's a good look politically for FIFA if expenses won't go through the roof, as everyone knew the Qataris really wanted to flex their near-unlimited wealth. However FIFA also knew the vastly overbudget Montreal Olympics put a damper on subsequent Olympic bids. But eventually they'll have to go to another developing country (e.g. SE Asia) and they'll have to do the whole stadium building again. North America is oversaturated with pro sports and I don't see how another World Cup would expand the game in the continent.
@@Avantime I think the world cup is going to start be divided by countries in a region more often. There could be a South American world cup or a EU world cup. I think just giving it to one country with all the corruption allegations going on is a mistake.

it is crazy how this video did not address South Africa. South Africa hosted the best world cup and continues to benefit from the legacy till today. This video ignored that fact and did not bother to mention. So yes, i understand the content of this video but SOUTH AFRICA IS A SUCCESS STORY which deserved to be told.

It's a crazy vanity project, even more so than the Olympics because very few new host nations actually have a chance to do well, and only a select handful of countries have the talent to actually win the tournament. It doesn't look good at home politically if the host team crash out in the group of 16, or worse have them lose all their games. Qatar could do it because it has near unlimited money and it's an absolute monarchy that could afford to care more about international prestige than domestic politics.
As a South African can I suggest you guys do proper research. The two stadiums in South Africa you speak of have not in fact been demolished. ALL stadiums are used on a very regular basis.
As much I am not a fan of the WC at Qatar, the journalism are totally missing the point why Qatar is putting so much money into(getting) this WC. Most previous host had some type of infrastructure and stadiums already. Whereas Qatar has actual plans for all their stadiums outside of soccer and those infrastructures plans where already planned nonetheless to attract tourism. Some of the stadiums have been already used for other tournaments and will be hosting AFC Asian Cup in 2023 who also happened to be the current champions. On top of that this WC was meant to be creating a new portal and showcase the city on TV all over the world and attract tourism. It might not seem like profitable now but it will pay off later because Qatar is trying to not be fully depending on energy/oil money and make it a tourism spot like Dubai. Most places that haven been hosting were already attractive tourist spots already whereas Qatar, most people don’t even know where it is at on the world map.

The difference is of course, if you design a World Cup for 3 months, you will fail. When you design and construct stadiums, and 60% of the cost to construct it goes to contractors, you will see costs balloon. However, when you design a World Cup for 10+ years in the future, you will succeed. I'm shocked as a South African, I don't even know what you talk about!!! no 2010 built stadium has been demolished, one changed it's name and every stadium is still intact
In Qatar there was a brilliant idea, they have built many easy to assemble/deassemble stadiums. They will deassemble those stadiums after the world cup and donates it to countries in need for them. Qatar gained a lot out of this, it might not has the same effect with other countries, Qatar is now known around the world even though it's a tiny state, they will boost tourism in Qatar, make new relationships around the world, become Known by itself is a very important gain. So, if what they are saying in this video is true, it doesn't mean it applies to everyone, Qatar has avoided the negatives and gained all the benefits of hosting the WC.
Honestly I do think when it comes to huge events like these, including Olympics, they should just find couple profitable locations they rotate. And maybe add locations based on actual sustainability long term.
sounds boring. tourism money is good for developing countries, but maintenance is also a cost. building generates a lot of revenue for developers, but already having stadiums in use is a net benefit to everyone else.
Certainly no third world countries, Communist or Islamist countries should be allowed to host it (too many human rights violations, too low on human development index). USA is the most capable, the data has proven it, they should be permanent hosts of all Olympics and all World Cups, so either USA or another First World democratic christian-dominant country, such as in Western Europe or Australia. (Sorry Canada & NZ, can't trust you while Justin "Bieber" Trudeau and Jacinda "Burqa" Ardern are in charge)
It's not true Mane Garrincha in Brasilia, Brazil turned into a bus depot. It's not used on a constant basis, but it does hold a few matches per year. We could say it's more or less like Wembley in the UK.

You don't host the World Cup to make money. You host the World Cup because you love the game. Thats it. This is NOT difficult to understand. Very simple.
The slave labor used to build the venues and infrastructure was a human rights violation. Qatar had foreign work force that were paid pennies for their hard labor and were forced to live in subhuman conditions!!
Many top media reported More than 6500 lives were lost from the time construction work for stadiums. Karma is a boomerang. RIP to all the poor and migrant workers exploited by the corrupt.
USA, UK, France, and Korea Republic are the only country i think that has a capability to host many sporting events without needing to build a new stadiums
It's probably better to build the necessary infrastructures in 2 or 3 countries and allow the countries to host the event in turn... This can work for both the World Cup and Summer Olympics. I think it will be meaningful to host the Summer Olympics in Greece.
229b is probly under reported. They might have ended up spending over 500b. And despite all of that, they still didn't pay their workers who built their stadiums. Pathetic.
Everybody is saying that South Africa benefited from 2010 world cup South Africa invested 3.6 Billion dollars as host and never recovered it The south African economy is stagnant Violent protests , poverty , crime is on the increase One of their major cities had a water crisis recently This is south Africa assumed as a developed country in African continent Hosting the world cup is a complete bad idea as hosting rights on everything that could be monetized everything went to FIFA and not to host countries That's why FIFA wanted world cup every 2 years
I think the World Cup gets it right by having different cities host the games in the same country. The Olympics should follow suit rather than try to cram all their events into one city. So have Chicago host but have some events in Milwaukee and Detroit. It would also give more cities a chance to host an Olympic event that could never host the entire event today.
New world class stadiums need to be build. The world cup is a prestigious sport, the biggest single sport event in the world. So you can not host the world at an nfl stadium or some average looking stadium nope. It has to look beautiful
The Olympics & World Cup should have a permanent host country--the USA. You've got infrastructure not just for every team, but for every athlete. There's stadiums big and small spread out across 3,000 miles in 50 states, for every one of them and their trainers & staff too. What's so hard about this? Put it here, problem solved. USA all the way
I'll never forget how fifa insisted on it's big game playing out of sight of poverty and underdeveloped areas.. If a stadium is fit to play.. the surrounding shouldn't matter, if most doesn't have a fortune to build luxury home they shouldn't be discriminated from having a match near them in favor of the rich neighborhoods
I stopped watching at “…South African government demolished two stadiums” South Africa is a soccer, rugby and cricket crazy country. Yes stadiums in Port Elizabeth, Rustenburg, Nelspruit and Polokwane are under used. These are small cities with no regular major events, be it sports or concert.
Proof that this is a lie. South Africa is a BIG sporting nation and we still use our stadiums constantly. We have some of the largest gate entries in the world.
You cant put the price of world up on a spreadsheet. There are all sorts of unintended benefits. Loads of people/businesses set up shop there. Have their feet on the ground and make decisions to move there or open up shop at a later date. Qatar is well placed because they have an airline and in transit area for the whole world. They do need to differentiate from dubai though.
I'm Qatari, the price tag is poorly misunderstood. It includes many multi billion dollars development projects that was planned for way before we won the bid in 2010. Like building new airport instead of the old (single runway) airport. Or new sea port to export more of our petrochemical products ( notice how completely unrelated to sports) Or modernizing and extending our roads to combat traffic (in a country where cheap petrol prices make people drive more instead of using public transportation)…etc. Along the way, the conditions of foreign workers have improved significantly. Some parts of the labour system were completely overhauled. The Kafala system was scrapped. Their accommodations were improved. Even FIFA acknowledged the reforms. I'm sick and tired of this anti-Qatar BS. Some just want to condition social and cultural changes to host such events. That's nonsensical, as it's unrelated to any of the qualifications in the bidding process. You can't just transform a socially conservative this easily. Some exceptions will be made for alcohol consumption in public during the tournament. (You can drink in Qatar but only in your house or in hotel bar). But even a guy like me who is fairly western minded, see a benefit of our way of life. We don't have to worry about drunk drivers while we are driving, or deal with violence caused by alcohol. You are all welcome to Qatar.
There's often two Agenda's involved in these massive projects, the first agenda is the one that sounds good, e.g building infrastructure, showcasing the country, creating 'good, well paid jobs', and of course Legacy (whatever that means). The second agenda is the real one, and it usually involves MONEY, lots and lots of MONEY, for just a relatively small number of people.
06:44 Yo South Africa hasn’t demolished ANY WC stadium. They’re used for football, rugby and concerts to varying degrees but all still standing. ZA hosted AFCON 2013 in 5 of those venues. As to the inflated construction costs that’s partly attributable to collusion.

They want to be like Dubai, a tourist destination. The actual cost of the stadiums are around $7billion. And they could have hosted the world cup without spending the extra $222billion. But they wanted all the new infrustructure and cities to be ready even before the world cup, so tourists and fans can come and experience it. That will make them come again in the future.

You can develop infrastructure, you get more people participating in football related events, you can create jobs for the future. Russia 2018 creates over 100,000 jobs in the country, hospitals, and improved ambulance routes. 1994 USA is one of the main reasons why the United States has a competitive football team and a professional league. Qatar 2022 is why Qatar’s population has been increasing at insane rates. It’s not just about the tournament, it’s for what’s next. What comes next for Qatar, is a national team inside of the top 50 in FIFA World Rankings, the defense of their Asian championship, their clubs competing in the Asian Champions League, one of the most visited countries on earth, hundred of thousands of jobs creates, improved diplomatic relations, and international recognition. The World Cup isn’t as one dimensional as most people look at it, clearly shown in this video that most people don’t look at the other side properly.

In other words you get mad when anyone that is not the US hosts it right
The problem is every country would want to be in that rotation, as the games would come back regularly and worth the costs to build everything.

Certainly no third world countries, Communist or Islamist countries should be allowed to host it (too many human rights violations, too low on human development index).

The World Cup is a planet party. Who makes money when hosting a party?
This is just about the joy and love of the game.
Can you guys make a video highlighting the current state of Iran and how Iranian citizens are being held hostage?

I’m surprised that when bringing up Brazil hosting the World Cup back in 2014, they didn’t mention Manaus. That’s a stadium built solely for the tournament in a city in the middle of the Amazon rainforest. Beautiful looking stadium, but there’s no professional soccer team in that area to sustain it, there are no roads leading into the city, you can only fly in, and the area is an impoverished area of mostly indigenous people.
