Probably not. John Lennox largely just makes emotional appeals because Christianity makes him feel emotionally comforted and existentially secure. The vast majority of his arguments boil down to “I believe in God because I can’t/don’t want to imagine a universe without God”

Sounds to me that Professor Dawkins is afraid to debate William Lane Craig.
Afraid is probably not the right word, but I certainly think he should be wary of it. WLC is quite skilled in the art of debate by simply using a reassuring voice and a lot of repetition and apparent certainty. I've heard many people pick apart his arguments, but that doesn't bother him a bit when on a debate stage, he keeps to his script, and for easily convinced people, that can certainly sound convincing. It's quite easy to pick apart the Kalam Cosmical Argument, for example, but it is a bit technical - and if WLC takes the stage after you and just claims that you in fact DID NOT pick it apart, but rather it stands, "as you all can agree", well then it might just sound like he won the debate.

This was to me the big cop-out for the representation of the New Atheism movement. I grew up as a teenager in the 2000's and I was addicted to watching videos of Dawkins and Hitchens, while never letting go of my Christian background. The great virtue of the Four Horsemen and New Atheism movement in general, I thought, was the desire to question everything and willingness to put their ideas to the test in debate. I admired these people for their courage to ask the questions most Christians I felt were cowardly to ask. However, when William Lane Craig appeared on the stage all manner of excuses suddenly appeared. Polly Toynbee pulled out of the debate, Andrew Copson the head of the Humanist Association made the bizarre statement on radio that he felt it was a waste of time to debate William Lane Craig yet encouraged atheists in the audience-to-be to challenge and put to task Craig's views. Dawkins himself was happy to meet with Young Earth Creationists and random American preachers for his documentaries, yet when a philosopher of religion came to his own home turf he backed out by saying Craig was too horrible a person to share the stage with. This in spite the fact that he very regularly spoke with people he disagreed with and people who shared morals he would call evil. In short, it was an excuse to avoid his objections to God being put to the test by someone he feared was potentially able to grill him.

Or… more likely, he simply doesn't care to take the time to debate Craig and his philosophical bloviating because Dawkins recognizes that you can’t philosophize a god into existence with word salads and blatant assertions built on more blatant assertions, which has pretty much been the entire point of WLC’s career after he openly admitted that the only thing that convinced him was “the witness of holy spirit”, which holds no merit outside of Christian circles and certainly holds no merit in academia. Craig is a professional word twister, and that’s why Dawkins won’t debate him; all Craig has are arguments without evidence

Well Richard is eight years older than Craig and he's getting weaker with age as everyone else. Second I think that arguing for deism (That there is an impersonal, meaningless intelligence holding the world together) and Christianity are two different things but they are often conflated and even if Dawkins has a hard time with some argument for deism it does not justify the teachings of Christianity but the audience would not necessarily see it that way. It is completely meaningless to me if I learn that there is a slothful intelligence behind the world's creation just like it was meaningless for ancient people not to know how the physics of gravity work. You cannot have a meaningful personal relationship with gravity or the law of thermodynamics or the way snowflakes are formed; those are simply explanations for banal things we see every day. Saying that there must be a God and even proving it is no different to me than proving that there must be some force keeping the blood pumping in my veins; it's nice to know but it ultimately won't change my philosophical outlook on life. The theory of blood circulation did not lead to new religions.
As for the Christianity thing more specifically from an atheist perspective it's no different than arguing for the virtuousness of a guy called Bob who lives in his mother's basement and allegedly has a rich criminal history. Bob never shows up when questioned and it's always his mother at the door answering questions for him. If Bob is so powerful why does not he get off his butt and at least prove that he's not skeletonized or mummified in the basement? It's intellectual masturbation where one guy is arguing for the Occam's razor type of explanation and one is wasting his intelligence on endless excuses for Bob; in the end nothing is changed; some people will keep joining Christianity for social reasons and those who don't live out those emotional moments never will because normally nobody is intellectually convinced by Christianity but many are intellectually deconverted. Some of these theology people are very bright and it's such a waste to see their intelligence being used to defend Bob instead of contribute to humanity and unlike atheism Christianity in the west has a very long institutional tradition of coming up with clever defenses of Bob whereas in my country we only had freedom of religion in the 20th century and the protestant church still enjoys massive privileges where theology programs are basically clandestine apologetics to benefit the clergy. Imagine if atheism or maybe more specifically anti-Christianity had such a long and forceful as well as forced tradition. I would not be surprised if there are people who can argue Dawkins to bits. It still does not make Bob get off the couch and prove that he's alive much less justify his indolence. A superhuman alien species could land on earth right now and make an incredible argument for some complete nonsense that even our brightest philosophers could not refute because of their superhuman intelligence but that would not make the rubbish real.

Sure, he uses rhetoric after to cover the fact that he is making an extremely arrogant/pompous statement, but that doesn't fix the arrogance. Then he doubles down on it saying that Craig has structured debate but that's all that's impressive, etc.
Dawkins, in all his public lifespan, has always been a pompous, arrogant person. I'm not religious but I can't stand the dood.
Also, I appreciate Alex pressing this question and maintaining integrity based on what have been two very positive interactions between Alex and Craig (the two make a great discussion pair).
Alex is, by far, the most fair minded, and well read atheist in the realm of genuine Christian theology.
Although I'm not exactly sure why, if he doesn't believe in God, he spends so much of his time labouring on this subject. Probably because he makes money off having such a successful TH-cam channel. But really, if you don't believe in something, why spend so much time talking about it? There's plenty more to life that he could be enjoying spending time on.
I'm a Christian man and, while I enjoy reading my Bible, praying, going to church and reading theology, I think Alex spends more time on God than I do!
@@user-kc7xk6wy2z when a scientist has a hypothesis, they don’t go find reasons that it works and call it good. The only way to gain confidence and be academically taken seriously is by attacking your own beliefs and trying honestly to disprove your own ideas. You do this by partly by honestly and rigorously studying counter arguments and alternative explanations. If he didn’t take the time to learn about opposing views so deeply, he wouldn’t be anywhere near as convincing and his arguments would be much weaker. I’d encourage you to try challenging some of your own deeply held beliefs as well, it’s very rewarding.
@@user-kc7xk6wy2z Alex has said before that he wants to be a Christian and that he is in a state of "non-resistant non-belief". Thus if God reveals himself to Alex, he would happily believe. To him, it's the hiddenness of God that makes him fairly sure that God does not exist.
@@euclid9492 Spot on. I struggle when I hear Christians and other theists talking about how their faith has been challenged. It nearly always seems to mean that they have had to work at convincing themselves they're on the right track.
With good science, having your views challenged by evidence or reason is exactly what you're seeking.

@@adriansims9770 that is one of the reasons I appreciate him. I have a Master of Divinity and an MA in Philosophy from a Southern Baptist seminary. It was when I wrote a paper on the Hiddenness of God that I realized how to explain what my real concerns about God were.

WLC is fundamentally flawed on objective moral values - as Alex has proven, a theist has no choice but to be a moral relativist regarding the Bible. There is a lot those people did, under what they believed was a divine mandate, is intolerable in our day and age
Or it could be that a belief based on unjustified belief is a bad argument? Would it be arrogant for a person who debated flat earthers to say there are no good arguments for a flat earth?
While I think it's wrong to avoid conversations, it's a simple fact that all major arguments for god are illogical and their logical errors have been explained to theists for years. So in that respect it's definitely true nobody has any compelling argument. I just think it's still worthwhile to keep having the discussion, as there are still millions left who haven't heard the reasons that believers' reasons for believing are illogical. As long as _some_ still have these conversations, that's important (at least until religious belief falls below 5-15% or something, where it's so irrelevant that debunking it isn't as important).

I can't really say the same of Mr Dawkins. There is literally 0 usefulness from debating Mr Dawkins on anything as he's already admitted that even if "God came down to show Himself to me I would not believe in His existence."
Dr Craig is far more than just a "professional debater" and the way in which Mr Dawkins speaks comes off more that he simply just doesn't want interact with someone who actually challenges him from the perspective of being persuasive to the audience.
Never heard that. Have heard him say he's not 100% atheist as it's not possible to completely rule out there being a God, but he hasn't seen good evidence for one.

@@Navyfrog22 His version of the Kalam Cosmological Argument - basically everything must have a cause, so the universe must have a cause which is in itself causeless, and so that must be god because god doesn't have a cause (even though everything must have a cause). And then to stop the argument ceasing at Deism he makes this god a personal god because the wheels set in motion would lead to us (as if that even slightly matters). It's wall to wall bullshit. Hitchens struggled a little because his strengths are not in cosmology, but essentially beat him handedly by calling out the internal inconsistencies in WLC's claims.

It's funny because it's how easily Dawkins and the rest of the new atheists absurd arguments are shown to be fallacious or poorly designed. Dawkins flat out can't debate or produce compelling arguments for his position. That's why he has said he won't debate and says there is no evidence that could ever make him a Theist. He is willingly ignorant. Peter atkins and others have said the exact same thing. This is why the new Atheists have faded into obscurity they are irrelevant.

WLC employs logical arguments when he debates. I mean logical argument in the strict technical sense of the term. That's very rare in a debate. To those who haven't studied logic however he may sound like he is talking nonsense. They don't have the intellectual tools to follow the detail of what he is saying.
Calling a logical argument "pompous" is not a refutation of anything. RD makes himself look very weak here.
Using formal logic does not prevent one from talking nonsense. A skilled sophist will happily couch an unsound argument in seemingly valid terms.

He even knows that there’s no convincing evidence for God so he relies on argumentation to “prove” that God exists, which I’m sure he’s aware that you can’t philosophize God into existence. A deductive logical argument can be incorrect in two ways: It can be invalid, meaning that incorrect rules of inference were used, or unsound, meaning that it rests on untrue premises. (Or both.)
In what way does WLC get it wrong?
@@dgphi It's not specifically a WLC problem, more like every single argument for god depend on unverified premises, that's why they're unsound, but WLC is skilled in expressing them as logical facts. They're not easy arguments to analyze so in a quick debate the one using such a trick has the advantage.

In the Christian belief, God doesn’t “come from” anything. God is a preexisting entity unbound by our observations of the constraints of space and time, as, of course, a creator of said concepts. God always has, and always will exist, the beginning and the end.
As for why I believe, it’s ultimately personal. I did grow up in a Christian home, so you might discount my beliefs entirely, but over time, I did my own study into the subject. I found that, in reading the Bible and in meditative prayer, I would feel a divine peace come over me. There were times additionally where I felt a stirring in my heart for something greater, and God was there.
Whether you believe or not is your own choice, ultimately. However, I would encourage you to explore the religion for what it truly is, asking theologians and priest questions to obtain a fuller understanding of the belief system rather than the views of exclusively other atheists. As a Christian, it is well worth it for me to understand my own beliefs deeper by seeing atheist critiques, and I believe it has only made me a more devout believer. On the flip side, I was surprised that Dawkins suggests that Christians should say that unsightly OT events simply never happened. That would be disingenuous. If they hold to the veracity of the OT as a historical text, they absolutely ought to wrestle with the ramifications. Seems like Dawkins is using something WLC said about the OT as a smoke screen to hide the fact that he was afraid to debate him. I think it would be a waste of time debating WLC anyway, as he constantly trots out the same time-worn arguments for god's existence. That's why I loved Hitchens' debate with him at Biola, where Hitch goes off the debate format and starts to throw various faith-challenging scenarios at him. You may have found WLC a nice guy Alex, but you stayed within comfortable boundaries and didn't challenge him. Whether you’re an atheist or religious, to say that the other side has no good points is just dishonest. I found Dawkins response just distasteful, and Alex rightly pointed out his hypocrisy by the fact he’s debated people like John Lennox but won’t debate Craig.
In fairness, Dawkins said whatever evidence he saw for himself, even if god spoke to him and proved existence, he'd reject anyway.

For all I know, theres a flying pig underground on mars. From a science perspective, we arent really gonna consider that, because its not testable. And deism here isnt testable, so its not worth considering. If someone were to believe in something without sufficient evidence, thats where the logic is faulty

WLC is definitely more adept at philosophical debates than Dawkins, but he really dropped the ball when he recently claimed that he "lowers the bar" for Christianity. He has also claimed that if he had been told that Christianity offers a 1 in a million chance of being true (or something like that), that he could not pass up on those odds. Basically, WLC admits that he's only a Christian because Christians got to him first before Muslims, Jews or other religions that would offer similar or better odds.

I'm sorry but please cite where WLC claims/indicates that he would have been Muslim or another religion if they got to him first. That does not at all align with his personal testimony, his doctorate studies, nor his catalogue of authored books, speeches, debates, and so on.
One of WLC biggest theological claims is the shock and extensive evidence he found for Jesus' death and resurrections while doing his doctorate studies. The Quran denies Christs death on the cross and resurrections - two claims that WLC defends vigorously and claims have strong historical evidence among both believers and non-believers.
This does not sound like a man who based his decision on a first come first serve basis or implied odds but I am willing to be corrected here.

Same podcast where he mentions that he lowers the bar for Christianity, which you conveniently chose not to address. I've heard WLC speak plenty of times and I was not comparing the evidence of one religion vs another. I was addressing two rather weak arguments by WLC.
You might find it helpful to listen to WLC’s follow up responses after he made those particular remarks you’re referencing. I felt it provided sufficient clarification. I’d shy away from viewing only rationally rules content on the matter. Best to hear from the direct source. WLC most certainly has not admitted he’d just as likely believe any of the other religions you mentioned had he had exposure to them first. If he has, provide sources.
After deflecting about why he won't debate William Lane Craig and giving every miniscule reason, it would be funny if Dawkins then simply said, "Well, to be honest, Alex. . . I'm afraid William Craig will kick my butt--that's the bottom line, I guess."

Craig is good at exactly one thing when it comes to debates like this - to bamboozle people who only have casual knowledge about the topic. He is really good at making his stance _appear_ to be oh-so-educated and valid by employing various debating tactics that are _only_ good for exactly that.
Hell, until I started to actually look into these things a good bit deeper, I couldn't find any fault in his _arguments,_ I only had a bad taste in my mouth about his methods, without being able to point at anything in particular that was actually bad or faulty. I would _absolutely_ have lost any debate against him, simply because I couldn't see through his tactics. Hell, I'm pretty sure that he'd still be able to pull _some_ tactic out of his bag of tricks to run me over. But that still would simply be that - debate tactics. I'm suprised he didn't mention the fact that Craig is a master of the gish gallop technique. Which in a timed debate is perfect for him. He simply overwhelms the audience and his opponents with so many half-baked ideas that rarely i) argue his opponents argument directly or ii) fit as a cohesive argument to the debate question. Is he hard to debate? Yes. Does it mean he has good arguments? Not in the least

It's easy to demonstrate that someone (including you) cannnot just choose to believe something. Could you choose to believe the moon was made of cheese? Of "no", then why not? What if you try really really hard to believe it. Then can you?
I'd need to know the full context of Dawkin's comment, and what his EXACT words. In "The God Delusion", he said the opposite of what you assert, so I'm skeptical of your claim. Are you sure he didn't say that he doesn't believe there is any evidence that COULD convince him, because if so, then that is just him offering an honest opinion of the existance of sufficient evidence.
I also don't believe there exists any evidence that COULD convince me, but if I am ever exposed to sufficient evidence to convince me, then (by definition) I will be convinced. While I got your attention, let me ask if you have any convincing evidence that one or more gods exist?
