I like the format and editing, interspersing the field video with the studio footage. This was a refreshing, first hand analysis of a shoe for which there are many online reviews. Most of the other reviews do not address the in-town use experience, which is what many runners are interested (running to the trail areas). Very helpful video!

I'm a heavier runner (215 lbs) and am new to the sport. I run mostly rocky and sandy desert trails. I absolutely love this shoe, especially because of the grip both uphill and down. It's really confidence-inspiring.

Just ordered a pair of these , had a friend who has bought multiple pairs and swears by them , especially if you’re in an industry where you’re on your feet a lot .

I do alot of Spartan Races and my favorite shoe for that is the Hoka Mafate Evo 2. It looks like the Evo line is gone or on a hiatus, which is a shame as they drain very well and we need that in OCR. I am looking into the Speedgoat as a replacement. Would love to see in some of these reviews how well the shoes drain and/or hold water. I know most trail runs you don't get them that soaked, but would love to see that added in on some of these tests!!

Great review. Been thinking about trying some Hoka Speedgoats and I see they now come in a wide version too, which should be better for my feet!

I just finished running the Cascade Crest 100 (23K elevation gain/loss) in the SG4s. It was my first race in HOKAs. I really loved the shoe. Did not know how the SG5s drain when going through water? The SG4s handled water drain really well. I am curious if the 5s drain as well. And agree with you on the shoe tongue. I saw that in the SG4s as well.

I wish Hoka would cater for wider feet. I'm a 12.5 US, 4E. Even the 13R US aren't wide enough.

The problem with the complete redesign of the Speedgoat is that it makes it a Speedgoat in name only. The Speedgoat 4 is so superior. The lockdown eyelets on the 5 will leave the laces on your foot, surpassing the too small tongue. The Speedgoat 4 were great on my section AT hike while the 5 were promptly returned.

So disappointed with this shoe. It gives zero grip on surfaces that are even slightly wet or sandy. If you running on technical trails like me, please avoid the speedgoat 5.
