I so wish there was a version that went all out on that crescendo... it's artistically perfect as it is, but it would please my little ears to jam to a heavily percussioned synth rock "chorus" in this song
Every time I listen to this, I cannot stop myself from imagining that Herzog's monologue is actually Captain speaking to Engineer while logging their team's mission progress during a rare moment of rest, around a charged teleporter. You can see other survivors in the background, preparing to go through - Commando and Sniper cleaning guns in silence, Mercenary meditating alongside an Artificer that is kneeling in prayer, all three bots welding and examining each other with a small hydroponics unit curiously poking around, Bandit and Miner looting Lemurian corpses while the Enforcer is watching with so much anger that it radiates through the helmet, trying his best to follow a direct order not to kill those two, at least for now. Huntress is barely visible, sharing a brief but suprisingly amiacble talk with Loader, who is stretching outside of her suit while she can. And if you can squeeze your eyes just hard enough, you can see a violet creature on a cliff, looking at the broken moon. Alone. Just like it wants to be. Update: [i?t ?s co?ing??]

"I love it, I love it very much, but I love it against my better judgement" - Me, looking at the Void Fields enemies get Shurikens for the third run in a row
I am FLABBERGASTED that chris uses the same quotes 6 years later ( "The trees here are in misery and, the birds are in misery, I don't think they sing, they just screech in pain." 2:37 ) he posted this exact same quote 6 YEARS AGO IN A REPLY TO A COMMENT IN HIS PREVIOUS OST "Werner and Klaus" OF THE DEADBOLT OST
Though, the Herzog monologue was about a rainforest, I feel as if it fits the entirety of the Void in this game, including the Void Locus in the DLC Speaking on how it's violent, and the only harmony that can exist there is the "Overwhelming and collective murder" suits the beasts of the Void (Reavers, Jailers, Devastators, Infestors, and the Voidling) so well "Even the stars up here in the sky look like a mess" almost perfectly describing the stars in the Void as they're being dragged into the singularity that you can see in the distance Absolutely astonishing track, honestly
This is my favorite track in the game. The attention to detail and the level of immersion it brings to the void fields is absolutely stunning. The 1st time I entered the void fields, I felt like a kid again, discovering a secret area in one of the games I would have played back then. The track brought a sense of wonder and mystery to the Void Fields, while also giving a feeling of dread and terror. I loved the feeling the music gave the stage and it all just fit so perfectly. The 1st time I cleared the Void Fields, the crescendo hit at the perfect time and seeing the landscape without all the darkness with the crescendo was a sight to behold. Another detail I always noticed was the sounds of bird calls in the track. I would point this out to other people and many would say they never noticed it. I would wonder what the inclusion of the birds meant, but I enjoyed hearing them because it added to the mysterious feeling of the track. Then when I listened to the track on youtube for the 1st time, and the Herzog monologue kicked in, the lines explained and analyzed the setting and themes of Risk of Rain so incredibly well, that I actually got emotional. When I hear the monologue when thinking of the context of Risk of Rain, it actually can bring a tear to my eye. I'm actually tearing up right now as I type this. The attention to detail that the monologue brings is just absolutely mind blowing to me. Then I searched up the original monologue in his documentary "Burden of Dreams" I was amazed to hear the same bird sounds that are buried in the track. Putting the connection together felt like another amazing discovery that I find this track to be, that the bird calls are remnants of the monologue that where not cut out in the games version. So while most people I talk to seem to claim other songs like "The Rain Formerly Known as Purple" (which is also an amazing track) as there favorite, I find my self here, "full of admiration, it's not that I hate it, I love it, I love it very much, but I love it against my better judgement."
The sound of the birds should also come from the documentary about Herzog's Fitzcarraldo movie. The interview is taken from the jungle where they shot the movie, you can hear the birds while Herzog is speaking!
I'd even take it a bit further... for me the monologue represents climate change. The struggle of the planet for survival, our planet. But it is true it describes Petrichor V perfectly. And Idk why but the bird sounds were dolphin chirps for me at first. But yeah for me the whole track is just the soundtrack of the climate crisis... like c'mon the fucking title already says it all! Especially the "And Don't You Listen to the Song of Life" - trying to disassociate us from the problem at hand, to ignore the problems the world faces... and then ""the Song of Life" pulls you in - back to reality - to wake you up. And then the crescendo and payoff at 3:42; like a part of a glacier falling into the ocean with a great splash.... Just for you to understand what Herzog is saying and letting you start to admire "the anger of god" if I can put it that way. I think we as conscious creatures also have a kind of fear and respect towards nature. It holds mysteries for us that we can't understand anymore because we lost the connection to it a long time ago... that's why Herzog says "I love it against my better judgement" because it's a kind of a call of the void he's answering by loving the unknown, by going into the jungle where civilisation ends. Oh yeah and the metronome-like synth that comes around oddly sounds like water dripping from ice onto the ground, making that beautiful glassy sound, but because of its constancy it also has the purpose of symbolizing a clock, ticking down to disaster. Hope these random thoughts are not fully out of sync and kinda understandable... Peace! I love this track
This music sends chills down my spine every time i enter the Void Fields. It's so... Mysterious and relaxing, but it also causes a certain... Existential dread as it goes. And this version with the Herzog vo just makes it even more intense. I fucking love this. Chris, you are a damn genius.

When I listened to your earlier upload of it, I heard the Herzog bit for the first time, and it made me listen over and over again. Now I can't help but hear it when I'm playing. I remember first entering the Void Fields, thinking, “wow, the music here is really creepy: I’m not a big fan of this area”. Then he crescendo hit and I had a similar reaction to the epic ness of con lentitud poderosa. A while later, I come back, remembering that I liked the song: but not what it sounded like. Once again, I was creeped out: and once again I was inspired by the crescendo. It is the perfect piece for the Void Fields, thanks for all of RoR2’s music Chris. And RoR 1
The Void Fields soundtrack always instilled a sense of loneliness and fear as you desperately find the next cell vent and fight ever increasing odds. And then I discovered its name.
I first entered the void fields by accident without knowing what they were and this set the mood perfectly. In the middle of the run when the crescendo hit it just really hit me hard and I instantly fell in love with the setting. I didn't expect the intensity of that moment but it just fit so well and I loved it
At first I didn't like the Werner Herzog monolog included with the track. But it grew on me. Then today, when I saw a new upload of the track, I was worried it would have been removed.
Your composition combined with the Werner Herzog voiceover provides a level of world building I've never heard in a song before. I'm listening to this on repeat, I'm in awe.
I wish there was a way to have the version with the Herzog monologue play in-game. Optional, of course, as it might be disruptive for coop play, but still. It adds a lot to the mood.
this song is so haunting, just hearing it in the void fields with that emptiness surrounding you is just amazing. Probably my favourite track on the soundtrack, right up there with coalescence and petrichor V.
Im usually not one for monologues in music, but this track has made me appreciate them much more. The atmosphere created with just this track alone is phenomenal, and while it may not be as action packed as the rest of the OST, i still regard it as one of my favorites and an absolutely beautiful track. Great work, Chris :]
This, and the Rain Formerly Known as Purple are two of my favorite songs in this game, but this track really hits something when I hear it. It's so calm, but just a little unnerving, kinda like space itself, at least to me. I still love that I found this area in the game completely by accident. I wasn't even aware it existed, since I didn't keep up do date with things, nor do I try to look into secrets immediately.
I remember, when I first unlocked acrid, I was engineer and we had a captain, loader, and a MULT I had lens makers, runalds band,Karo band, dio best friend, had all been integrated into the cell. They all died to a Kjaro band proc from a imp, and I was the only one left. I had some bungus,a tougher times and I remember that they were calling hacks as I was somehow surviving and I somehow survived by circling the imps ,lemurians, wisps and beetle guards and then 3:43 hit. And then the final cell charged. Everyone was screaming WTF and HE DID IT HOW, and I was screaming HAHA TO BE LEFT ALONE LOL . I proceeded to win that run, with the 4 resonance disks I got, and at that moment I felt like the king of everything, and I just wanted to share this with you Chris, if you read this
I love this track. It has personally made me cry. Herzogs monologue is such a great analogy about the game but also about life. Chris, you used it in a way that genuinely describes how life is. There is this misery all around us that we cannot get rid of, and it is a curse. But we love it against our better judgement because of the good parts of life.
To be honest, best track, hands down. Finding a lost portal to enter the void, to overcome increasingly awful odds, to save Acrid who was shackled inside... Pretty damn inspiring when the music really picks up as everything is crashing down.
as a person of youth I'm gonna have nostalgia about finding this level and me and my friend just jamming out to this theme as we explored such an amazing environment. this game is really just such an amazing piece of work, I love all the extras and secrets it just feels so big. nonetheless this song is great because it helps along the lonely desolate feeling the area gives off I love the atmosphere it gives off. this is one of my favorite creations of yours.
Every time I listen to this I end up tearing up. Ever since the first time I heard it in game. There is something with the way the music compliments what the guy says. It just works so well that... even whilst playing, my subconscious listens in and tells my tear ducts to start watering. If I had to describe this song, id say it’s a mess. A beautiful mess, perfectly orchestrated.
The first time I listened to this song I was in a car on my way home from a holiday, pretty much blacked out from exhaustion. As soon as 3:43 hit I felt my soul leave my body holy shit
I have never played ROR2, I was just listening to this while playing Elite Dangerous, and suddenly I heard the voice of one of my favorite film directors. I'm definitively going to play ROR2 now.
I love that sound that plays at 1:48-1:50. idk why but it feels like outer space. Like being near a black hole or something. It’s a really short part of the song but it feels like it has a lot of emotion. was that the intention idk but it sounds real nice
Just stumbled on the original monologue and instantly remembered your song. This monologue with your music, such a beautiful association. Some kind of "peaceful violence" I could say. Thanks for such amazing pieces, I love it. I love it very much.
This song, combined with the void fields, the way it all clears up and becomes isolated when you win, and the achievement name 'to be left alone' made me feel some sort of sadness, fear, and confusion all at once Why the hell does acrid have such a creepy unlock path

I can't believe how good you are with music, this style is so much different than the first game and gives off a completely different feeling but still it fits this game so well! Good shit man.
"Choking and Asphyxiation, and fighting for survival." I didn't understand why you included that specific line until now, it honestly should've been obvious to me. But it fits so well with where this song is associated with
I played my first full playthrough with friends who had already beaten the game 100%. I still remember, as Engineer, how fucking terrifying the Void Fields were to me the first time I saw them. Health withering away the moment I stepped out of the capsule thingies, the odd crystals that wobbled, this wonderfully crafted soundtrack, how drk and foggy it was... We were playing on Drizzle, yet I still felt like I shouldn't have gone through that secret null portal. I no longer feel that terror as I have already gotten a victory in my first solo Monsoon playthrough... But this song brings me back to that very moment where I feared for my character's life, whether it wasn't as dangerous as I thought or not.
God I recently started playing ror2 with a friend and the first time I entered the void and heard this song I was filled with such a new mixture of excitement and dread at having to make it through waves of enemies. And when the music hit its crescendo the whole experience cemented in my brain forever.
Playing through the void fields for the first time was frankly the best experience I've had in the game purely because of this song. But listening to it here with Herzog truly solidified it as my favourite song in the soundtrack, closely followed by rain formerly known as purple
When me and my friend are in the void fields we always recite Herzog's monologue. It feels wrong not hearing him speak about the obscenity of the Jungle
Such fitting music for the void fields. I can't wait to have the console version get the update so we can see more of the game and hear more of this amazing music. Thank you for the amazing soundtrack, Chris!
I don't remember from which game but because of they used the same birdsong sample in this song in that game, the birdsong fills me a sense of loneliness but wondrous exploration. I can't remember where it was from and I'm going to lose it.
Chris if not for my friend getting me addicted to this game I would have never found your music and that is just something I could not live with. One of my favorite composers 👍
i think ror is nothing without the soundtrack, imagine how good your job was to make the soundtrack be better than the game thx for this exiting experience!
Knowing the lore of the void, the voiceover made this whole song more eerie to me. We're not in some place to collect items. We're almost in the void. And that's terrifying. (Also Acrid looks fucking adorable on the image)
The Void feilds are probably my favorite place in the game, the dead void reavers buried some in the ground, the strange deep ocean like environment, the way the void like a real ocean has a crush depth or maybe its just hostile to anything out of containment that hasn't been specifically realised from their prisons, the way if you look around you see its a endless ocean of purple and unknowns, the prison for beast such as acrid, its so mesmerizing
Imagine having to tell someone your favourite gaming song is call "a glacier eventually farts"

And then the final cell charged. Everyone was screaming WTF and HE DID IT HOW, and I was screaming HAHA TO BE LEFT ALONE LOL . I proceeded to win that run, with the 4 resonance disks I got, and at that moment I felt like the king of everything, and I just wanted to share this with you Chris, if you read this
I recently started listening to the ost with headphones instead of just through speakers and oh my God all the songs sound better.
I listened to the song of life Chris, what are you going to do now?
I love this track. It has personally made me cry. Herzogs monologue is such a great analogy about the game but also about life. Chris, you used it in a way that genuinely describes how life is. There is this misery all around us that we cannot get rid of, and it is a curse. But we love it against our better judgement because of the good parts of life.
Though I don’t listen to it often, this has got to be my favorite thematic track of the game. Simply genius.
Man I really love the monologue during the song. It holds a great story bit for the game. Great
we need more musicians like you
There can be only one.
@@AstronautDown fair enough
2:42 echos through my head when my run is ruined by vultures in the void
But all in all
The lyrical part is a mood and i love every part of it
To be honest, best track, hands down. Finding a lost portal to enter the void, to overcome increasingly awful odds, to save Acrid who was shackled inside... Pretty damn inspiring when the music really picks up as everything is crashing down.
I understand the song of life part now… sots album
I’ve listen to the song of life
You are truly a complexe and intelligent person
as a person of youth I'm gonna have nostalgia about finding this level and me and my friend just jamming out to this theme as we explored such an amazing environment. this game is really just such an amazing piece of work, I love all the extras and secrets it just feels so big. nonetheless this song is great because it helps along the lonely desolate feeling the area gives off I love the atmosphere it gives off. this is one of my favorite creations of yours.
I allways thought that melody sounds "peacefull" and "happy" But the monologue gives me monkaS for the entire song ever since
Every time I listen to this I end up tearing up.
Well, prepare to be disappointed because Herzog is not in the game :)
3:42
When this part hits I feel like I just obliterated, it blows me away every time
This place has such a mysterious and depressing and almost creepy atmosphere, the herzog bit goes perfectly with it
I love that sound that plays at 1:48-1:50. idk why but it feels like outer space.
This song, combined with the void fields, the way it all clears up and becomes isolated when you win, and the achievement name 'to be left alone' made me feel some sort of sadness, fear, and confusion all at once
Why the hell does acrid have such a creepy unlock path
The track is already deep but the voiceover makes it so much powerful, also in context of game.
For me making this track was probably the most fun I've had with any track I've written because I love Herzog so much and this was such a perfect fit.
there is no way you planned it all 😭
🤔
Man, once you complete the event, this place is so serene. The music, the giant kelp stalks sticking out of the strange ocean rushing past far below.
Time stands still, you can just sit there meditating for a while

I can't believe how good you are with music, this style is so much different than the first game and gives off a completely different feeling but still it fits this game so well! Good shit man.
0:25 that chillin vibe from the beginning always gets me
"Choking and Asphyxiation, and fighting for survival."
I didn't understand why you included that specific line until now, it honestly should've been obvious to me. But it fits so well with where this song is associated with
The first time I visited the void fields I was so creeped out due to this music, it made the area feel alien and wrong
But this song brings me back to that very moment where I feared for my character's life, whether it wasn't as dangerous as I thought or not.
that one note on 3:43 is like a glittery bowtie, a cherry on top of a really moody and gloomy/mysterious song, absolutely fire.
when i first heard this i instantly wanted to constantly do the void just for this song
God I recently started playing ror2 with a friend and the first time I entered the void and heard this song I was filled with such a new mixture of excitement and dread at having to make it through waves of enemies. And when the music hit its crescendo the whole experience cemented in my brain forever.
Absolute madman- getting away with this - high art atop high art atop high art - gorgeousness and gorgeosity made auditory. Phenomenal.
Playing through the void fields for the first time was frankly the best experience I've had in the game purely because of this song. But listening to it here with Herzog truly solidified it as my favourite song in the soundtrack, closely followed by rain formerly known as purple
There aren’t many artists that truly, genuinely intimidate me.
Chris is at the top of that list.
Boo!
@@AstronautDown AA.
When me and my friend are in the void fields we always recite Herzog's monologue. It feels wrong not hearing him speak about the obscenity of the Jungle
This song inspired me to learn the Herzog monologue. Absolutely bone-chilling, and my favorite song in this phenomenal soundtrack
Every music video has its own editing! I love it! Chappeau Chris!!!
I admire all of what you do quite a bit. Definitely my favorite song of which you've made!
Me and my wife screamed in the car listening to this, we geeked out SOOO hard. this is one of the coolest listening experiences I've had in ages.
What a beatiful song. Forever and always, Christodoulou
Everything about this track is perfect
Such fitting music for the void fields. I can't wait to have the console version get the update so we can see more of the game and hear more of this amazing music. Thank you for the amazing soundtrack, Chris!
I don't remember from which game but because of they used the same birdsong sample in this song in that game, the birdsong fills me a sense of loneliness but wondrous exploration. I can't remember where it was from and I'm going to lose it.
If I knew how to mod games all I would do is make this the in game version, the Herzog monologue is so impactful.
Chris if not for my friend getting me addicted to this game I would have never found your music and that is just something I could not live with. One of my favorite composers 👍
There this tightness, this grip it has on me. Against my better judgement I love it.
Bro, keep doing what you’re doing. Best music ive heard in a video game
The void reminds me of the ocean, a vast desolate place, seemingly lifeless, but if you look close enough you can see life, in places most unexpected.
you know what? i WILL listen to the song of life! you can't tell me what to do!
That's the spirit!
i think ror is nothing without the soundtrack, imagine how good your job was to make the soundtrack be better than the game thx for this exiting experience!
Can't wait to listen to (The Song of Life)
It was beautiful
10/10 track, would listen to again personally.
My fav track hands down. The drop raises my hair
3:42 that one chord hits hard, man
This makes the Void realm perfect
Knowing the lore of the void, the voiceover made this whole song more eerie to me. We're not in some place to collect items. We're almost in the void. And that's terrifying.
(Also Acrid looks fucking adorable on the image)
great song, i get to listen to it pretty often too with how much i like to rush void fields stage 1 for an early headstart
i was listening this ost, while doing homework and on 3:30 i finished and hear an epilog, then, i cryied
This track is so calming but freightening at the same time
Your music is truly a work of art. I hope you grow very well known.
Ah yes, the V O I D
I've always wondered why this is the only song in the OST to have an Explicit rating.
Have you heard the narration? That's not appropriate stuff for children.
@@AstronautDown Oh, I have heard it. Many times. Was just a random thought I had.😅
Listening to this while reading the description of the Ritual Daggers hits different
