    Good video.. Important to also keep in mind the ability aspect and academics. You could do all the things you mentioned in the video but if you're say a pitcher throwing 77-83 with decent command, it's going to be really really hard to play DI ball... and if you don't have AT LEAST a 3.0 gpa / 80 average in high school... forget it.. But that being said, don't fall into all the hype on D1 schools. There are plenty of great D2, D3 and JUCO schools that would sweep mediocre D1 schools in a series anytime. Play where you can get playing time and will develop as a player.. a bunch of mlb players who went to college didn't play at the D1 level

      first round pick for the Cubs Brendon Little went to North Carolina for a year and transferred to a JuCo. So you're exactly right, it's not where you play it's where you get playing time and make yourself a better player

    Speaking straight facts, my D1 dream actually ended in football out here in Cali I played a lot of D1 guys and reality hit me of what it really takes

    Love this. My biggest challenge as a coach is communicating this exact message. I've come to realize it's mostly young ignorance of not really understanding what it takes to play at the D1 and/or pro levels. As much as I try, I can teach my players the skills, but I can't give them the make up.

    Great advice. I know a kid who got cut from his high school team when he throws 90. His attitude was so poor the coaches didn't care about his speed at all.

    My dad always said, “you never know who is watching”. You always hustle and give 100% every time you step in between the lines. My three brothers and l got college baseball scholarships for a reason. We put in the work and my Dad would find us the exposure.

    Have never been truer words spoken! My son now a sophomore at New Paltz University. He is only 5'3" but the 3 schools that wanted him couldn't stop talking about his work ethic. Busted his but for play. Never brought a bad at bat on the field with him and always picked up his teammates. Nothing like a great attitude and work ethic to get coach's attention .
    Great vids BTW -Joe

    Had to comment and give props. Having been through the travel ball world myself I can say you won't get this much honesty from anyone else. Especially from coaches which just want to take your money and fill a roster spot most of the time. Kids listen good, use baseball as a means to get an education, any education. Don't let baseball use you, and walk away with nothing to show for it. You have statistically better odds of being in a plane crash or terrorist attack than making any substantial living in baseball. I know I know,. You'll be the exception to the rule and I sincerely hope you do. But you almost certainly will not, as sure as death and taxes, be a mlb player.

    Well said....I played in a D1 school in Florida in the late 90's early 2000's.....what you are saying is 100% true. My freshman year 1998 we had over 50 guys on the team. Only 25 dressed. Even if you are a stud at that level you have to do the small things right and be a good teammate or you'll be a guy checking the travel list every week. Great advice.

      Ian McManus me too. I'm good but no where near the best in the state let alone the nation. However, I make very good grades and love the game to death. I'm going to one of the best baseball high schools in the nation and I'm going to work my ass off to get my ability up there too. My goal is to play at Notre Dame and eventually go on to the MLB, and God-willing, have a great career. Best of luck to you.

    Moved from NJ to Texas three years ago not to play but to coach, and I instantly saw the difference in talents. Guys up north have to work twice as hard than guys in the south. They are out here grinding every day. Also when it comes to guys wanting to play college ball, first thing they have to be is realistic with themselves. How do you compare with the guys committing to D1 or guys playing at that level? That's something most don't do.

    As I rewatched this video, there are several other questions that need to be considered:
    1) The decision whether to sign a contract with a major league team or play college baseball. I have had a couple of friends sign immediately after high school (and be wise enough to ask for college money at a later date.
    2) Do you really want to WORK TWO FULL-TIME JOBS in college (baseball and school)? When I worked trying to keep Div I athletes eligible, some of the schedules were pretty horrendous, especially during the season.
    3) How will playing baseball affect my future career aspirations? For example, playing intercollegiate sports will put you a year or two behind if you plan on attending medical school as fitting in labs during the season are pretty difficult. Also, you will not have the experience in the medical field that is expected for medical school applicants.
    4) While I like Division III Sports, you do need to remember that MANY of the schools at that level use sports as a means of recruiting applicants to the school.. It costs them almost nothing to keep a large roster around and you are generally paying serious $$$s to attend some of the smaller private college.

    Bingo! We'll said. If you're worried about looking cool vs playing well dont worry about playing college BB. You need to eat breathe and sleep baseball to have a chance at a D I school. Baseball cant be a maybe i will work on it today thing for you. I played D I and minors for ATL for 2 years. I still have dreams about baseball more than i do anything else. Driven is a word that comes to mind as well. If you need someone to motivate you...dont bother. Self motivated, positive attitude and a hunger to learn is a good start.

    You should have also mentioned two other factors:
    1) Off-field conduct. Most coaches don't want to see a police record as those maturity issues only get worse in college.
    2) Academic eligibility - What good are you to any coach if you cannot get admitted to the university or maintain eligibility at the college level?

    I'm a freshman, and by no means am I the best player on my team, but I'm probably top 2 or 3. I've played since I was 6, and I hope to play college ball, but I can't seem to stay consistent or find a position I like playing, while also being good at it. I'm a tallish, athletically built player. I've played everywhere besides catcher. I know 3rd is probably where I'd play more, but I just don't like playing it because I'm not good at it. I love playing first, second, and pitching but I'm not very consistent. I'm right handed and I bat left handed (I'm working on switching sides because I have much more power from the right) can you make a video on how to stay consistent please? Thanks. Keep up the good work.

    I know I’m late and I doubt you’ll respond to this, but I got really screwed over with my high school baseball experience. At my school, since it’s small, they allow eighth graders to play for the jv team. My eighth grade year I played and I was our go to pitcher, but my coach hated me so I never got to bat or play any other position. Meh whatever at least I got to pitch. Freshman year I didn’t play at all even though I thought I had potential. Sophomore year was the beginning of covid and there was no season. And no season again this year for my junior year. I have no idea what I need in order to get out there. I mainly pitch but I think I’m a decent hitter too. I throw low 80s fastballs and have great off speed stuff. Are college showcases a good way to go? And what does my future after college look like if I go to a d2 or d3 school?

    If i am not a great player and not in a great program but can feel I have potential and am 100 percent willing to work for it what are the stepping stones to become the best I can be? Serious question, am 15 years old

    Realistically if I'm left handed and I can throw 90s can I at least make independent ball?

    • @haroldgilbert9202
      @haroldgilbert9202 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sauce Boss Not enough information. Control, command, and break of several pitches is also very important

    • @collindoyle7569
      @collindoyle7569 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're a lefty and can throw in the 90s there is no doubt you'll get a shot in indy ball. Harold is right about the control, command, etc. but that can be achieved easier than high velocity. In other words they can teach you that stuff/ help you improve that stuff.

      Thanks guys for the feedback i really wanna play at least to that level or even minor league my fastball still has the tailing/running movement that would miss bats

      Sauce Boss Do you have any secondary pitches its going to be hard to have success in pro/semi pro ball with just a fastball

    What about a if you're on the bench like what can you do if you're not playing in that game to get a college coach to like you a little bit more

    Biggest thing you have to do besides all of this is market the shit out of yourself. Get to every tryout, workout, and anything and everything that will get you exposure. Write to these college coaches. Show up at a game. Who cares? No one else wants you to make it as badly as you do, so therefore no one is going to push as hard for you. Do it yourself because truth be told, you could do all these things but if no one’s there to see it, it doesn’t matter. Pitchers can all throw 95-+ and hitters can all hit it. The game has evolved to a ridiculous level, therefore you gotta do a lot extra to separate yourself from the pack.
    Sincerely,
    Nobody special

    Hello sir my name is Jordan Newman and just had a quick question for you. I played baseball for 14 years growing up and played 2nd Base in Yale, OK for high school ball. After high school I joined the army but never stopped loving the game. My question is how would I go about getting back into baseball and playing for a college team? I'm 21 almost 22 and have been out of high school for 4 years. Do you have any pointer's on where I should start?
