Sears was not the Target of it's time, it was the Amazon and more. You could get your car repaired, get family portraits, popcorn, candy and seasonal craft kiosks. You really don't know enough about Sears to make this video, and I'm not trying to insult you, just educate you as a 3rd generation Sears employee. It was a great place to work, and we took that for granted. Thanks for shedding some light on this historic company.
I worked there 97-99 and it was a place you could make a day out of. They had potrait studios, hair salon, dedicated cell phone vendors, and even a tax preparation service. They would have reps from companies companies like Nintendo, Sony, and Apple come out to interact with the customers. I know times have changed but back then the store wanted to spend time with you and make sure you'd always come back. We'd help customers bring things to their cars and if they forgot a cable or something silly and they were in town we'd drop it off for them. If we were out of stock of something we'd sell the display at a discount. No one does that or cares any more. Modern retail makes you feel like herded cattle being rushed in and out.
I never once saw popcorn and candy at Sears except at a vending machine. You might be talking about a small minority of big city Sears or more than 50 years back. I think the Target or Kohls brand is closest to what they were the last several decades.
They took out the popcorn/candy counters sometime in the 70's. They had one in Roswell NM back in the 60's which wasn't exactly a metropolis back then.
Sears was also the lead anchor for all indoor malls, most of the other anchors were clothing stores with the exception of Montgomery Wards.
Such a slow and sad decline and failure of an icon. The Craftsman brand lives on, but it's just not the same seeing it in stores that aren't Sears.
I worked for sears twice, late 90's and early 2000's. I miss those days! I did shipping receiving, sales in electronics and loss prevention. Sears was the place to go for literally anything. One of the biggest business blunders in history. So many good memories and relationships made while working at Sears.
Sears catalogs were famous for having all kinds of stuff. It was a bit like a pre-internet amazon. I remember hearing stories about people buying houses by Sears catalog that were delivered by train in the late 1800s/early 1900s.

What a goldmine the Catalog sales department was! At Christmas time in the suburban stores, you actually had to wait in line in order to use the telephone ordering desks. My store in suburban Milwaukee must have had 20-30 red phones, with every current catalog on the counter in front of you. You would page through it, pick up the phone, and talk to a representative in some central location that knew how to give proper service. And it was so efficient. In less than a week, your item(s) were either delivered to your home for a fee, or picked up at the catalog desk for free. They had warehouses all over the country...much like Amazon has built. So stupid that they gave all of that up. It was the same at Penney's.
My mother worked at various SEARS locations for many years. SEARS was my fantasy wish-list company in the 60's and 70's.
I miss Sears so much. I treasure every made in USA Craftsman tool I have.

So many of the iconic stores are gone now. Sad to see this happen. I can relate to the jacket. I still have a hoodie i bought at k-mart 20 years ago. I still wear it all the time.
Now all we have is Walmart. Atleast in Canada.
I’ll miss Sears. The one local to me growing up (Watchung, NJ) closed about 5 - 6 years ago. It was a free standing location along a major highway in my area. The spot has been redeveloped with other retail stores. If Eddie Lambert was really interested in the company he could have made it into an Internet retail giant like Amazon. Their “wish book” catalogue could have been a year round site on the Internet plus they could have kept a fraction of the stores open to support the internet site. It’s sad that didn’t happen.
Oh, Lampert was definitely not the tipping point. Sad to see this Sears close down, because most of our household items were bought from there. Well, at least some tradition is being kept. Craftsman tools are being sold at Lowe's and Ace Hardware, while Diehard car batteries are available at most auto parts stores.

I was at the Sears in the Florida Mall just over a week ago and that one is still hanging in there. Florida Mall is actually a fairly healthy mall (they have an Apple store, a Tesla showroom, many specialty stores, and even a hotel), and while the Sears was fairly well stocked, it was definitely showing signs of Eddie's poor leadership - notably half of the second level was blocked off

As someone whose family parked near the Sears entrance at our local specifically so that my dad could check out all the tools , I get a tiny hitch when I see those stacks of Craftsman tools.
My first job out of HS. Westminster Mall Westminster California. And last retail job as a manager at Sports Treasures. Movies,food court. RIP. Loved it.
It’s sad to see what has happened to Sears. Especially since they are no longer in many iconic places in our country, and now they’re basically no where.
Sears didn't fail so much as it was systematically butchered, to the point that it's owner deliberately was killing off locations with such tricks as selling properties to his own third party company so he could liquidate it faster, turning ownership into leases that shoved operations costs up further.

@@electrodynamicorb6548 Sears is a rather unique story- it was bought and deliberately "failed" in order to convert it's assets to cash. It was rendered uncompetitive, inefficient, and shoved out of its own established markets...by itself.
By capitalism standards, Sears did exactly what NOT to do, ending up zeroing out it's market share, production, and function as it was dismantled and the remaining small gobbets left to rot.
It is sad when some things come to an end. I had nice memories visiting Sears in LA when I was a kid. I live in east LA and that building was iconic, it always felt special going there cuz we were kinda poor. It would be full of shoppers and was the first time I ever got on an escalator, that always stuck with me. And escalator was so awesome for a kid. Its a shame they are gone.
This is a complete tragedy for Newport Mall. They're actually going to let them go.

man i remember when my brother saved up a years salary working at fedex to buy a bowflex from sears, aw man great memories. i actually still have the maytag washer/dryer my parents bought in 2009, when they seperated in 2018 my mom gifted them to me, funny enough her samsung has had more problems than these two ever had. i actually called maytag about 2 years ago for a new thermostat and they sent it for free

Sears was the juggernaut as late as the 70s and 80s. Unfortunately, management did not foresee changes in consumer tastes and buying and fell behind in relatively short order. I still have many Craftsman tools from the 80s and Kenmore appliances still going strong. It's a real shame, given what we have in its place today.
That mall looks huge! And tall 1:03! Encouraging how busy it is. The Sears “Store Closing” advertising/graphics are actually very impressive (professional) looking!
Hi Ray. Sadly this going to happen more and more. I give that mall another two years and it will be a ghost town just like all the malls across America. With all the on-line shopping and people not making the money they used to and the high prices, it's a wonder some places stay opened. I know you took a tour of Brass City Mall and I was so sad. The money, time, and man hours put into that mall had me in tears. It's a wonder if big malls are going to be a thing of the past. Hi Marie. I don’t know anything about this particular mall but I don’t see why it would necessarily become a ghost town since it’s so lively now. My local mall has been absolutely thriving thankfully. It’s definitely not completely over for malls! Sadly, it does seem to be over for sears.
@@sheriboudreaux9078 well the Brass City Mall here in Waterbury used to be one of the busiest around. Every store in this mall was busy. It took only two years and now I think there is maybe 10 stores left. This mall was huge too. At any given time you couldn't find a parking spot but now you can with a handful of cars in this lot. We have another mall that is non existent going towards Boston Mass. We have the Danbury and Meriden mall that brought in people from different states and again maybe 5 to 10 stores remain opened. Even my friends shop on line and they even say the malls are something from the past and I'm almost 60. I hope your mall continues to thrive
The way they built the mall was suburban style in an area that is highly becoming more and more urbanized. I do see this entire mall eventually demolished but replaced with a development similar to Hudson Yards since Newport is an in-demand neighborhood and it would include a version of this mall but probably as part of a future skyscraper with high end with retailers such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and Prada (maybe an Apple Store).
@@97nelsnDo you know the mall I'm talking about? They built in a area that is high in crime. If you ask me the people killed this mall. A month ago someone was shot. It is almost in the downtown area and like I said at one time it thrived

Sometimes liquidators do bring in leftover merchandise from other liquidation sales. They also raise prices to the full price and then gradually lower them as time progresses to the end of the sale. Often these closing sales are run by an outside liquidation company, and not Sears (or whomever is going out of business) and the goal of the sales is to raise money for the bankrupt store's creditors.
That's what I saw at the last Kmart, I'm not sure if thats what was happening here
The same thing happened when the local supermarket chain was liquidated. Huge signs on the windows promoting huge discounts, but when I went inside, the prices were higher than before they filed for bankruptcy.
@@RayOutThere Some tips for shopping at liquidation sales:
1) Know who is running the sale, is it the store or an outside liquidation company. Many store closing sales are run by outside liquidation companies. Some of these liquidators include Gordon Brothers Group, Great American Group, Abacus Liquidation, Hilco Merchant Resources, Tiger Capital, and others.
2) Make a list of the items you plan to buy
3) Compare prices elsewhere. Write down on your list the lowest price you found elsewhere to see if the liquidation sale is cheapest or not. If only part of a chain is being liquidated or closed, compare the prices at ungoing stores run by the company with those at closing stores run by the liquidators.
4) Always ignore previous prices or percentage off signs at these sales. Sometimes these are inflated or taken from the MSRP as opposed the previous price the original retailed charged prior to the liquidator coming in.
5) Inspect items before you buy them. Avoid items such as reconditoned goods, open box items, items that look incomplete, etc unles you know what you are doing or plan to fix them yourself.
6) If possible, pay by credit card. This way you will have more protection if you get screwed.
7) Don't buy extended warranties unless you verify that the company that provides the warranty is not involved in the store bankruptcy.
8) Remember, the prices will be higher at the start of the sale and gradually lowered as the sale progresses, keep in mind that the selection diminishes as time progresses. So it is a trade off when shopping at these sales.
9) If you have any gift cards, coupons, etc for a retailer going under, use them immediately when you find out the retailer may be going into liquidation. There is usually only a small window to use these before they become void. It is common for liquidators to stop accepting the store coupons once liquidation starts.
10) It is common for liquidating retailers to close service departments within a store earlier than the stores closure date. So if you had anything pending like pharmacy, layaway, rental items, repair items, etc, ask immediately about the status of these if the store goes into liquidation. Unpaid layaways may be lost entirely and you may not get your money back either.
11) Once a liquidation sale starts, you will have only a very small window to make returns of items you made previously before the liquidation sale at best.
12) When a liquidation sale starts, the policies for the store's branded credit card can vary. Sometimes they will be accepted, and other times the liquidator will not accept it. Often the liquidators will not offer special finance rates.
13) If you have ordered any items that you have not received yet from a retailer that is liquidating via online order, catalog order, mail order, or the like contact the retailer immediately to see if your order will be shipped or not. If your order will not be shipped, see if the retailer will credit you back. If not, file a dispute with your credit or debit card company immediately.
14) Remember at going out of business sales, ALL SALES ARE FINAL.

I think Sears could have had a fighting chance of succeeding if their leadership was different. Eddie Lampert ran the company into the ground and turned it into real estate flipping hedge fund type operation and not focusing on its core business which is retail. Pretty sad.

Wow , growing up in the 70’s my parents bought everything at Sears , clothes , auto repairs, washing machine, insurance they were the Amazon of the 70’s ! Everyone wanted a Sears credit card and a Amaco gas cc! If you had those two you were styling then add an American Express was tops ! And with Sears and their wish book! And we had Jc Penney upgrade with Montgomery Wards ! Now it’s Amazon , Walmart and Target ! Sad to see Sears gone they had a guarantee satisfaction guarantee or your money back their tools were the best ! Times change

Sears has been at this depressing level of "are they gonna make it another year or not" for about 6 years, and it is just depressing. I don't think it deserves to suffer like this. I'm wondering once they get down to one or two stores, if they will become like Blockbuster where it becomes kind of private and sort of a tourist destination. Enjoyed the video as always, Ray!

I lived in the US with my family 1982-84 in NJ. I liked Sears - quality items well displayed - but even then it was clear that it had problems - more salespeople in the store than customers.
2:23 having tube security camera tvs in 2024 is crazy
The sad thing is that this store was going to stay open as a 1 floor store with primark on the 2nd floot and sears was going to get a proper remodel. At last minute Dave and Busters asked Sears for the first floor for lots of money and thats why the remodel signs were taken down at last minute. That's why there is tons of new paint around the first floor of the store.

I'm not even that old but "Soak Up the Sun" playing at 7:38 while you walk the old aisles and the lines of unopened appliances makes me feel oddly nostalgic. Reminds me of a warm summer day during childhood, or something.
We still have one in our mall. They don't even have the heat on very much. As soon as you walk in it's colder than the rest of the mall.

Dad used to buy Craftsman tooks there back when they were American made and quality. Did school clothes shopping. Even occasionally used their car mechanic service.
I used to inventory Sears stores with RGIS about a decade ago.
These stores have not changed since my childhood in the 80s. Sad what their management did to the company.

My wife and I went to a Penneys closing sale. You had to be quite cautious in shopping to get quality at good value. A lot of the merch was really low end production but massively marked up so it could be 50% and 75% off.
Bedding obviously only worth $50 on its best day was priced at over $200 then marked down.
I bought a couple items i regretted after use. Some socks that had no elasticity and skimpy cut...like a smaller size in the wrong package. A couple shirts that barely made it past a wash or two.
Appliances were probably the best deal, and they were slow to discount them more than 25%.... Which is what you can typically negotiate off a price at a furniture or dedicated appliance store. The discount initially brought them down to Lowes prices but as cash and carry floor models

My grandmother had good cridet at Sears all her life. Every time she needed a new color TV she always went to Sears. when she got old nobody else would give her cridet. Most cridet card companies want to make sure you will live another 20 years to pay them off. 😂😂

You are correct! In retail, when a store is closing and prices are heavily discounted, unsold or excess merchandise from other stores will typically be sent there because there is a good chance it will be purchased when people know their savings will be significant. I've closed an Aeropostale in a dead mall years ago and the volume that store did in it's last month probably surpassed the sales of others for an entire year. Everything is heavily marked up to begin with so it's good business for the retailer to have excess inventory sent there to be liquidated.
I worked at the Sears store in Greensboro, NC until January 2023 (They began liquidation in April 2023 and closed in May). We used to rent a UHAUL when nearby stores were closing to load up on the good merchandise and various office supplies; we would bring them our clearance merchandise that wasn't selling. This no longer happens because there are no nearby stores; there are 12 full line Sears stores in the country.
There is an abandoned Sears right where I live in Leesburg, FL. My mom would always go to get us clothes and mainly suits. Man I miss the old times 😢
I know at least those Pelotons (Essentially smart exercise equipment) boomed during the pandemic so people definitely do work out at home.

It’s sad that they couldn’t even afford to hold out one store by the New York City area in Jersey City. This one looks like a really nice sears too. I have been in them before a Kings Plaza shopping center but we would never really buy appliances there and would go to Lowe’s.
Really sad to see Sears go. My local store (Rockaway, NJ) closed maybe 6 years ago and was used as a vaccination center during the height of the coronavirus - that was weird. That denim jacket is too cool!
I've got a old Sears fixture. A shelfing display they placed in the racetrack for trinkets or pillows or whatever. Still has a Sears insert in it. Also have 3 Sears baskets and a large power strip they used in Electronics. We lost Sears in my state, and I don't think there is one within 500 miles from me. It's sad, but retail is in constant change.

Used to work in the one in Livingston NJ back in 2011. Visited it about a year ago and it's empty. Was at the end of the Livingston Mall.
Interesting, Thanks for showing this. There have been no Sears in this state for several years. When one considers Richard Sears began in 1892 selling watches to railroad agents, was joined by Alvin Roebuck , grew to be the largest retailer in the world until the 1980s ( Where America Shops/ Solid As Sears) sad to know it exists for all intents and purposes as part of history. Although there were Sears brands like Coldspot, Silvertone, J.C. Higgins, Guardsman that had been discontinued, some others survive like Craftsman, Diehard, Kenmore , owned and marketed by others. Allstate Insurance and Discover card were also started and operated by Sears. A case could be made that this is the largest US business failure.
There is still a Sears in the Las Americas Fracciones Plaza in Ecatepec de Morelos, México, (nearby México City)🇲🇽. I was so surprised and excited about it when I was there I had to go buy something 😂

Sears portrait studio took me and my wife’s pics before we got married and I look at those pics every say. They cut my hair. Fixed my car. Sold me my first gas grill. Lots more memories.
yes, there is extra merchandise brought in from other non Sears stores that are brought in to make the store look more full then if it only had remaining merchandise

I visited the SEARS at Florida Mall when I went in November. Only one I've ever visited.

They still have a Store in Puerto Rico and they sell pretty well also they have Sears Hometown Stores that you can find appliances for house and lawnmowers ect. But it’s sad seen another Icon store going away.
We still have a store down here in NC if you can ever make it down here. Raleigh, Durham, and Louisburg all have one.
No they don't. Greensboro store was the last Sears store in NC, and it closed in 2023. There are 12 full line Sears stores open in the US as of now.
Our Sears in Fairbanks Alaska closed right before COVID and Ironically it was located right next to KMART which closed In The early 2000’s right after Kmart declared bankruptcy. The old Sears building got bought by U-Haul a few years ago.
12 to 16 weeks is the time frame. Been there done that. Nothing in the store belongs to sears anymore. Everything belongs to the liquidators. They buy the entire inventory. Fixtures will be sold when the store is nearly empty or special days after. Not sure of the Kenmore name but the Craftsman name will live on for some time in places like ACE Lowe's and others.
A two floor Sears opened in Burbank, CA in 2023. This is one company I can see coming back. Not to its previous dominance, but having a store in every major city.
I don't see it happening. The two reopened stores basically look like they did before they liquidated. I worked at the Greensboro, NC until January 2023. We would get merchandise twice a year, and it was very poor quality and usually out of season. It got so depressing and boring that I left. It was liquidated by the end of May 2023.
They do bring in merchandise from other stores to liquidate. I was at the Harper Woods MI. store when it was being closed, they brought in tons of coats and jackets from other stores as far away as Illinois, as well as other merchandise.
Kmart is in the same shape. They should have never merged. That’s when both companies started to really spiral downward. It’s sad. Thank You for the video!
From what I understand, whatever warehouses that still have inventory and other stores that have closed, they push what remaining stock they have in the still open stores.

If your at a flea market or antique mall, pick up a Sears Roebuck catalog, 1920's-1980's and look at the wealth of merchandise available for pick up of home delivery. Most of the items were made in the USA with few imports. I worked at the Sears in Columbia Mall in Maryland in the 1980's. I was in the catalog department. The company was badly run then.

The videos I have seen of other Sears that are still open, they look just like the ones around here before they closed. Very little inventory to sell. That looks like a lot more inventory than the recent videos of the couple of stores in CA that are still open. They sold Kenmore and Die Hard batteries but I don't remember who bought them
Sears was the number one place to shop for any thing in America. 1960-2008.
