Also for anyone saying I’m thinking too much or over analysing the Maria prison scene, think back to how much everyone hated Mary Elizabeth McGlynn’s portrayal in the HD collections new voices ? She does the EXACT same thing as what’s wrong with this one, she almost delivers every line of dialogue as Maria which isn’t what’s supposed to happen team silent said they intentionally made the voice flip back and forth between Mary and Maria, one being sweet and light, Mary and the other deeper and more seductive, that was the original teams intention with that scene, M McGlynn did every line almost the exact same and tons of people complained about that, this is the same problem, it’s not me being elitist or nitpicking, it’s integral to the story team silent wanted to tell, watch the making of SH2 and you’ll see them directly speak about this. Let’s please be kind to each other in these comments and stop assuming I’m just complaining for the sake of it, it’s just how I initially reacted to the video but trust me I’m still going to buy the game and play the hell out of it I’m sure, so there’s no need to worry if I don’t like it, I don’t like it, and if I do, that’s an added bonus 😊 I’m sure we’ll all enjoy the game, but I thought I’d give some further context about the above, I can even link the clips of people complaining about this back when the HD collection when it first came out, please watch this clip from 23:53 until 26:46 th-cam.com/video/TxYkNUyBhS4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=MPDUIiIOtq7gFk2R
@@jb2einziger you're explaining things that shouldn't even be explained in the first place caus anyone with an average IQ would see the blatant difference and how butchered the remake is in every way shape and form. people shitting on you are the kind of dudes who you can serve shit, and eat it just because its labelled silent hill.
Honestly? The original SH2's voice acting is serviceable for its time, but its only a step above Resident Evil Jill Sandwich. There's so much more nuance with what we've seen from the remake that I think one would honestly have to be brain damaged to have the emotional acuity of a sloth to not see the night and day difference.
@LIQUIDSNAKEz28 Because the opinions are stupid, plain and simple. Taking non issues and blowing them up to make it seem more problematic then it really is. When in reality, other then a couple lines from Maria. The characters look, act, and sound amazing. Even "Mary" sounds super close to her original performance. But oh no suddenly the game is in serious trouble because of some bad voice direction for like 3 lines? Fuck off. There's genuine criticism and common sense, and then there's people who make everything a problem. Get over yourselves.
Just for the record I’ll be pre ordering this and playing it/making videos on it and I’m really hoping that it turns out great ! I’m not a negative reviewer or lets player in general if you see my other content I’m always hyping loads of games up and saying how great they are, the comments don’t come from a place of hate they come from a place of love for the series, I actually comment in the video a good few times saying how great it all looks, environments, some character models, awesome to see all the familiar scenes like James in the hotel room, Angela in the burning stairway etc, I’m actually rooting for the game but there’s certain voice acting in that specific trailer that makes me worry they’ve missed subtle details that makes me think they don’t understand the importance of that to the overall story, I’m not just complaining for the sake of it, I’m sure we’ll all get it and all enjoy it, those are just my initial reactions and how I felt at the time, thanks for watching 👍
They absolutely *RUlNED* Maria. I know modders will fix her f4ce and outfit, but that souless, monotone line delivery is just *H0RRlBLE.* 🤮 Everything else looks fine. The game's beautiful visually. They nailed the aesthetics and actually made Eddie *BETTER* than the original, but what they did to Maria almost completely ruins the game for me.
Again that’s largely my biggest takeaway from this trailer is that the game looks amazing in terms of tone atmosphere graphics etc, but the voice acting and delivery of some of the dialogue goes so far to effect the story and our connection with these characters and world it’s a huge part of SH2 and not just a minor detail. Thanks for watching 👍
I think the voice acting is fine you all just need to get out of the og headspace and realize it’s different now and just because it’s not the way you remember it mean it’s bad
@@weepo2651 I definitely understanding where you're coming from, but there's nothing wrong with the original aside from the ancient game mechanics. I think the devs saw Capcom's success with the Re 2, 3 and 4 remakes, but failed to realize that the reason 2 and 4 got so much praise was because they stayed faithful to the original story and only changed what needed to be improved. The execution of the original story doesn't need improvement. I would argue that while films that are classic and perfect films don't need remakes, old classic games do because the technology has improved and we'd all love to play our favorite classics with better graphics, sound and controls. It's true that just because something is remade differently that doesn't mean it's bad, but with so many bad remakes in film and games, it's natural to compare them to their originals.
@@jb2einziger We knew from the start that this is not going to re-use the voice acting audio like MGS3 Delta does. So, it's bound to turn some people off. Then again, there's the camp of fans who disliked some of the VA in the original so there's that. I'd say the potentially bigger issue could be de-sexualization; Since the new gameplay trailer doesnt have Pyramid boy molesting the mannequin. Or maybe it's just not shown for the trailer.
@@knot3d_ yeah I know it wasn’t going to be included and tbh before I saw that featured in the MGS3 in depth trailer I never even thought that could be done really but now I see it I think that would be a cool way of doing it, as it could still look brand new and have new game mechanics etc but still the original voices if certain people want that, don’t get me wrong I’m happy with new voices as long as it’s not too drastically different script wise and delivery wise etc, and I know what you mean about Pyramid Head and the mannequin, maybe it’s just not shown in the trailer but even in the making of SH2 behind the scenes they say two of the major themes to really shake up players is to involve sex and death in a lot of the themes of the game as it’s what humans are concerning everyday. These topics and uncomfortable subjects need to still be there I think
I completely agree with all the complaints and good finds. I will add: 1) in the original in the scene with Maria/Mary the lamp illuminates Maria's face from above, and hard contrasting shadows fall on her eyes, hiding her eyes, this adds complexity to James's understanding of her true intentions, and the facial manual animation creates all of Maria's internal text, but we read all of this only by body language and facial expressions, not by the eyes. + This to some extent repeats/connects the first frame of the game, where James looks at himself in the mirror, his eyes are hidden by hard shadows. Both of these moments work for the idea. And here, in addition to the fact that we see Maria's eyes, they play almost nothing with either her face or body. By the way, with her body, in the original she sat comfortably and spoke easily, here she froze in a strange pose on a chair. 2) In all Silent Hills, the protagonists had a chest flashlight in their LEFT pocket. I always thought it was poetic and symbolic: "the character makes his way through the chambers of the mind, illuminating its nooks with the light of his heart." Now (for some reason) the flashlight is in the right pocket, and it turns out that it is now just a flashlight. What was the purpose of this change?
Very well said 👌 and yeah now I think about it the shadows over the eyes is a touch they could have have included, especially with what we found out not too many years ago about James looking at the audience in the opening bathroom mirror scene but the darkness reveals the way his eyes are facing, and yeah again I didn’t even notice the flashlight
The original SH2 is up there as one of my favorite games of all time, this remake trailer looked amazing to me. Especially Eddie, they nailed the look and voice acting. Also, cant wait to hear Yamaoka’s new tracks.
Yeah the original is god tier, I love SH1-4 more than I can put into words, the only reason I’m critical of certain aspects of the remake is because I’m worried that it will taint the series in a way they may not be able to come back from and a lot of modern audiences may think this is the way it always was, I’m really hoping it turns out great as again I’d love to see the same treatment for 1 & 3, the RE remakes have all been really great I think, 3 was a bit too OTT and short length wise but I still love the RE remakes of 2 & 4 a lot more than I thought I would, so it is possible for these type of remakes to succeed 😊
@@jb2einziger Did you...did you not see short message and ascension.... And you're worried THIS would taint the series? What kind a take is that? Also I'm fairly certain you've never heard a women's voice in person before.
I do have a full in depth review available on this channel now if you’d be interested to know my thoughts on it further ? I actually really enjoyed the remake 👍
The scene of Maria in the cell speaking to James as Mary is such a crucial part of the story. It's haunting and uncanny and, even if you see the scene before you play the game and learn the story, it is mysterious and creepy so it reels you in. I just feel like they should have replicated the scene exactly because there's no way to improve it. I think that scene is perfectly executed in the original game. I also think that the uncanny looks of the characters in the polished cutscenes of the original are vital to the setting of Silent Hill as it's some sort of alternate reality, so thigs should look and feel familiar, yet oddly unknown. I am so curious and anxious to see the full game, but I think nothing will capture the whole aesthetic of the original game.
So I certainly share your concerns about the opening shot with Maria not sounding like Mary, for not only is it not faithful to the source, but it makes the scene make no sense. Why would James suddenly mistake Maria for Mary in that scene when she’s making zero effort to sound like Mary. I definitely think it takes the emotional impact of that scene away. That said I do love the scenes where she is talking as Mary, I think it’s very well done
Yeah exactly it completely gets rid of that mind game the original played so well, in the making of the team specifically say they wanted both voices to come out of Maria in that scene, it all sounds too one note from this trailer, however I hope it is better in other aspects, for example I think the game looks incredible and I’m sure there’s some great puzzles and set pieces or gameplay tweaks, I just hope the story isn’t impacted too much by certain decisions with the dialogue or delivery of the performances 👍
@@jb2einziger Yeah, it's saddening because I think that scene is one of the most mind-tripping and compelling scenes for the very reason that it fools the player (and james) into thinking "oh shit, she's actually Mary!" and doing it this way sort of loses that. At the same time, after watching it again and again I'm trying to be okay with the change. That its almost like Silent hill itself is talking to James, telling him that she can be whatever he wants, thus the sort of emotionless monotone in her voice. That's the only way I can reconcile it in my head.
@@LightsFuzzy yeah I see what you mean I think I saw another comment saying the same kind of thing, like because Maria is a creation by the town for James that it’s just speaking to him through her in a way etc, but I did get a lot of comments on this video saying I was being way too critical of the voice acting, but when you think about it the story of SH2 is what makes it a fan favourite of the series, it’s so important to still capture a realistic and believable performance from the small cast involved in order to keep you invested, even Masahiro Ito said when the HD collection came out with the new voices that he thinks the performances etc will completely disconnect the player from wanting to actually find Mary or sympathise with James in any way and that’s such an important point is to make us side with James until the end when we learn the truth, our only knowledge of Mary is through James’s memory, if this new voice actress just delivered all her lines very monotone and just like Maria, then we won’t feel that same connection that James did, it’s her responsibility to make us want to like James memory of Mary, but yeah other times in the trailer the voice acting for Mary sounds great so I’m sure hopefully fingers crossed it will still turn out well 🤞 thanks for watching !
Yeah like I said I think the game looks incredible in terms of graphics, tone, environments etc it’s just some of the acting seems strange to me but that doesn’t necessarily mean don’t give it a fair shot, I sure will be
@@jb2einzigerI mean mates, original is weird as fuck when it comes to actors. It has some of the most stiff dialogue action, and animations. (Not all the way through, but it still would be considered mid through most of the game)
I had the same feeling. The distinction between Mary and Marie is crucial in one of the most important scenes in the entire game and we should hear a character switching between these two. The city looks awesome, Eddie looks great, but i just think the direction for voice actors wasn't good.
To me Maria sounds like shes talking down to james like she’s being sarcastic or rhetorical. I kinda like that actually. She sounds as if she’s bored of him which is an interesting change of pace. It’s definitely different from the original but I don’t know if thats necessarily a bad thing. For me personally I think it works.
Yeah now you say that I can definitely hear that in the delivery, I’ve praised the game in a lot of ways regarding the character models, environments, gameplay etc, but I guess when I first saw this I was quite worried about the voice acting not fitting etc, I just hope there’s no dramatic changes to the dialogue or way the scenes play out etc but I’ve heard both gamespot and IGN say it’s extremely faithful and sticks to the original very closely so I’m quite excited to play !
The maria in prison scene is the most iconic scene of the game and omg what the hell is this? She sits like a robot talking like she is here only to do her job as voice actor
That’s cool then I’m still buying it and am looking forward to it I think the gameplay overview looks great ! Just a couple scenes here threw me a bit when I first saw them but like you say it’s nothing major
I’ll prob like some stuff in the game and feel let down by others (same with RE2 remake which while over all good coulda had everything from the original so it was a missed opportunity) But I have the original game, my ps2 and a CRT tv so I can play it properly still until one of those breaks but hopefully I’ll be able to find a replacement. I wish everyone else were as lucky
I think they're doing a lot right and the visuals looks incredible, but somehow they're fucking up in areas that should be easy to get down. Why on earth would they change Maria like they have? This isn't some minor aesthetic thing, her appearance and line delivery was relevant to the story. If they do this in other areas of the game, I'll be more disappointed.
Well that’s my main thing about this trailer it’s not me just trying to hate on it for no reason, there’s subtle changes made to Maria here both delivery wise and other that effect her importance or our connection with James towards her etc, it goes as far to effect the story it’s not just nitpicking like a lot of people are saying. Thanks for watching 👍
I think Promise significantly changes the vibe of the characters in the story trailer. If you’re interested, check out the trailer I’ve uploaded. I replaced Promise with Silent Heaven by Yamaoka and the atmosphere and depth of the characters is completely different imo & it really builds the tension
The line delivery of many scenes just sucks. Take the scene of Maria in the labyrinth for example, she is just glued to the chair she lost all her body language and playfulness she had in the original game. I'm saying this as SH2 voice acting was very unique due to their weirdness and feel as when you listen the dialogues, it's sounds just like normal people not actors and that weirdness made the game special in that regard. That unsettling weirdness of the characters confusion and expression. The VHS footage looks like crap too, have you ever seen a HD VHS? They don't exist by the way, and the transitions are like those cheap effects you can buy from the internet. Even WallpaperEngine has better VHS effects that the ones showed in the game. In part is understandable as probably no dev from Bloober Team have ever touched a real VHS before.
Yeah the VHS effects look a bit strange especially the transition to it, and yeah I guess the voice acting for Maria in that prison scene just caught me off guard so much I wasn’t paying much attention to her appearance or the way she was sat but yeah the playfulness seems definitely toned down and very robotic, thanks for watching 👍
You're complaining that a different product is different. It's ludicrous. By all means feel free to complain about whatever, but if the remake was identical to the original, it wouldn't be remake. It would be the exact same thing. We already have that. The discourse surrounding this game is completely insufferable.
I’m still buying and playing this game and am excited about it as I say in the video but certain things are putting me off about it, I wouldn’t want it to be identical but like the MGS Delta remake of 3 they’re taking into consideration the core fanbase by including the original voices and a game style called legacy mode which means you can even play it in the old perspective or the new for newcomers, I’m all up for games getting an upgrade graphically and gameplay wise, but it’s valid to be concerned when so much of a focus is on the storytelling and acting in this game, I’m not being out of order towards the game just for the sake of it, im a fan, im allowed to be concerned about an IP that means a lot to me
Something about Eddie's new model looks off, maybe it's in part because we haven't seen his full body, but his neck specifically looks cartoonishly bloated. He was fat in the original, yes, but he somehow looked more realistic than he does now. I do think the expression work and his voice acting is actually quite good. I also don't like the random arbitrary changes to character designs in general, I always find that to be a massive red flag with a remake, just changing shit that didn't ever need it.
Yeah same here like eddies weight isn’t and never has been an issue for me I know it’s part of his backstory as he was picked on a lot because of it, but yeah in the original SH2 at least he looked believable size wise, now it looks like they’ve almost made him a parody of himself etc but well have to wait and see what he’s like for the rest of the game, I wonder if the pizza line will be there ??? Thanks for watching !
The voice acting is off. It's almost as if the voice actors just can't be bothered! It is a throwback to 90s video game voice acting that no one wanted! I don't mind listening to bad voice acting for comedy value, but this is just bad and not even funny!
Yeah I mean I don’t even think it’s intentional as a throwback I think they’re either trying too hard and it comes across hammy or they’re just not understanding the emotional impact of certain scenes and underplaying it or trying to intentionally be as different to the original to make it their own take on it etc, but so much original work and thought went into the voice acting, if you watch the making of or guy cihi interviews by Dave Schaufflee he says they used to act out in front of all the creative team each scene during mo cap, 8 or 9 times until they’d perfected the scene, then they’d go in the booth and record it, they were so controlling over all those scenes and wanted them to turn out that way, in this new one it’s almost like they’re given a script and just free reign to do it however they want etc.
Regarding the music. Unfortunately yes, I believe they will be over-the-top versions of the original to fit the new hollywood style direction of the game.
Yeah I really don’t know how you can recreate or improve upon such an impeccable OST, I listen to the SH2 soundtrack like, how could someone even create something this perfect sounding, I think it will be like the halo 2 soundtrack where it’s like Steve vai guitar solos to make it more epic 😝😂
@@jb2einziger agreed. Personally, I think the only way it could be improved upon was if there were more unused recordings from 2001, unreleased songs or extended versions. Like in the early trailers of the original game had the extended version of Theme of Laura and acoustic version of Theme of Laura.
@@ZakynthosDiamandis yeah that would be good 👍 also like the RE remakes a lot of the tracks seem to be more subdued versions of themselves as to be more ambient and not noticeable, like in a ps1 game you can picture a track just looping and looping but in modern games like these it would have to be more subtle or quiet maybe ? Im excited to see how it turns out 😁
@@jb2einziger yeah exactly! The Gamecube RE remake is 100% proof a remake can be better than the original and should be the template of how a remake is made.
Your comment is so idiotic specially since Akira Yamaoka himself is remaking the ost. I find it hilarious how all of a sudden everyone is a music, voice acting and directing expert. Y'all should try to make a game yourselves.
Hi everyone. Thank you for taking the time to watch this but we need to stay civil in the comments below please 🙏 we’re all here to discuss this and we’ll all have our own thoughts and feelings but please don’t take my criticism of anything in this trailer as a DO NOT BUY THIS GAME, or THEY’VE RUINED EVERYTHING ! Because in all honesty I’ll be buying the game release day and playing it/making videos on it and I may end up loving it, just like I did with the RE4 remake ! this video is nothing more than me just reacting initially to stuff that feels off to me, but in no way am I saying we should all hate it or not play it, play it and have fun with it ! this is just my thoughts and how I think it holds up against the original based only on what we’re being presented. I’m not hating on anything just for the sake of it or to be trendy, you can see on my channel I have full lets plays of SH 1-3 from years back as well as analysis style in depth reviews spanning hours, so I’m a lifelong fan of the series and take from that if you will, why I’m taken back by some of the the way the characters act/deliver their lines here. Let’s all appreciate we’re even getting this title in the first place and if it turns out great then perfect, if not, we always have the originals to play 😊 thanks for watching
Your concern for this remake reminds me of the concerns I had for the FF7 remake series. I hope this one doesn't disappoint you like the FF7 remake series disappointed me. They utterly ruined that game.
Yeah I mean contrary to the opinion of me you may get from this video I’m not that fussy at all when it comes to video games, but SH2 is so important to me that I can’t help but over analyse it and just pray i end up really enjoying it or that they do a great job with it as I’m hoping we’d then maybe get the same treatment for SH1 & SH3 but I don’t need the remakes essentially I still have my PS2 set up and all my original SH games available if I ever want to play them, it’s more that I think it will just drag the legacy and name down even more if this really fails, thanks for watching 👍
I personally think the rose-tinted glasses on many people are just currently glued tight to their faces... I understand wanting to give this a shot-hell I want to give it a shot myself-ive been dying for more silent hill and god knows i want this to succeed... because i really REALLY want the same treatment for silent hill 1. But i think we should all stay criticial... cautious optimism is mandatory here... dont let what is good make you blind to what isnt. Thats what star wars fans allowed to happen with the sequel trilogy... and thats why we are where we are with that franchise... Be critical but if the woke infestation ruins the story DO NOT be afraid to be vocal... i want more silent hill as much as the next guy, but its not worth turning the franchise upside down over...
I wouldn’t go that far, I have some valid criticisms on the fact that a lot of the dialogue seems different, to the point the characters in the game which were expertly written are now presenting themselves in a way which doesn’t seem like them even to the extent that Mary and Maria’s dialogue in the labrynth/prison scene is the wrong way round !? That scene is pivotal to the story and I’d say misunderstanding that is a valid cause of concern, I don’t think I’m elite or know best about the series I’m just a longtime fan who doesn’t want to see the games story tarnished.
@@jb2einzigerwhat are you talking about? The script is unchanged sometimes i wonder if the people criticizing this remake have really played the og game. It seems alot of youtubers particularly are hating on it cause its the trendy thing to do.
@@ignacio1887 I’m not saying the script has changed it’s the performances and how the dialogue is handled that may cause concern amongst fans, I’m not trying to hate on anything, I’m going to get the game when it comes out as I’m a fan of the original if you don’t believe me I have a 2 hour long deep dive analysis style video called my love letter to SH2 on this very channel where I just gush about the entire game and how it’s shaped me and my taste in games etc, I’ve been a fan of and playing the series for many years, I even have full let’s plays oh SH1 - 4 with tons of info on behind the scenes, lore, theories etc, trust me I’m not a newcomer, I think people are taking my concern on changes as me saying boycott and don’t buy this game, I’m not, I’m just saying that I think of what we’ve seen so far that’s all
You are one of the few people who actually criticized this trailer on the delivery of the characters which I also thought is waaay off. It's like the new developers don't understand the characters at all.
Yeah I mean certain deliveries sound strange to me, I can’t quite put my finger on it though as some of the other dialogue I hear sounds quite close to the original so it seems very up and down I just hope it’s only a small portion of dialogue that sounds different
@@jb2einziger For me, Angela is the biggest problem with the remake. Her voice actresses not only sounds wrong (she doesn't sound sleepy, stoned, or completely hopeless which is sorta her entire vibe) but she's also barely acting at all. She just says lines with no actual delivery. And her face is obviously weird, but it's not as bad as her voice. The only other time the delivery bothered me is with Maria behind the bars. She's supposed to sound exactly like Mary there, copying her exact cadence. She only goes back to her sensual Maria voice at the end when she's trying to convince James that she can sound however he wants her to sound. And it's odd that she's not playing with his head there. Not sure if they noticed that in the first place which is odd.
@@StudioMod yeah I address this exact thing in another video on my channel reacting to the reveal date trailer and and a little meme out of it where David Brent from the office goes on the blind date 😆 and yeah I feel the Maria and Mary back and forth isn’t there in that prison scene, it’s like they missed that whole head game team silent was playing with the audience
There's no such thing as modern audiences. You guys are just nitpicking like crazy. 5 minutes ago everyone was shitting on it. It's looking good now, you're in the minority. If you guys want everything EXACTLY the same as the original, play the original!!!
People like you keep embarassing yourselves at exposing the fact that in actuality you aren't really fans for how much you can't handle VALID criticism towards the remake, and care so little about preserving original intent and lore. "Fans" like you are the reason why the franchise went down the drains.
So am I, I have let’s plays of SH1-3 on this channel as well as in depth reviews and analysis videos on SH, it doesn’t mean because you’re a longtime fan of a franchise that any criticism of a remake where the trailers show character changes that feel off to the audience are invalidated, imagine if Disney said they were going to remake empire strikes back, even and especially OG fans would lose their shit 😂
@@jb2einziger Damn, then I don't know what to tell you lol. We are lucky to get Masahiro and Akira being a part of development. It's still uncanny just like it was back then. (in a different way) And Konami are Japanese business men. I don't think they care for American politics. It's been obvious that isn't working
@@jonovah oh yeah of course I have a video on my channel called my love letter to silent hill 2 where I just gush about it for like 2 hours and I mention I’m really excited that both Masahiro Ito and Akita yamaoka are on board I’m pre ordering the deluxe edition with the soundtrack and art book just for that reason as I love their work, my only gripe is some of the line deliveries/voice acting, graphically and atmosphere wise I think it looks perfect etc, I’m still gonna play it, I’m just concerned about some of the way the lines are mixed up/changed but I’m sure it’s fine and I’ll have a good time playing it, I was skeptical about RE4 remake as that’s my favourite game, I ended up loving it !
@@1theprince1 Valid criticism = subjective feeling. Tons of Silent Hill veterans loved the trailer and voice acting in it. Mostly people with nostalgia goggles on nitpick every little thing. Maria voice acting is fine, I like her acting more in the remake in the cell than the OG game that I finished countless times.
The trailer showed us some great clips in terms of what people wanted to see that they hadn’t so far, and I think graphically and atmosphere wise it looks almost perfect, my main gripe is some of the voice acting or line deliveries, because that’s not just a small thing the storytelling and way the characters present themselves is very pivotal to the story, I’ll still be playing it and I hope I’m proved wrong and it ends up being great ! Well just have to wait and see 👍
There's certainly things that are sticking out to me as being very strange or dare a I say, mediocre. Something you mentioned at the beginning of this video, is exactly what stood out to me as well. The new vocal delivery sometimes feels more in-line with the HD remasters than the original, and nobody seems to be fussing about a single performance change, funnily enough. I will say, I don't think SH2 OG was perfect. I think the creature design, music, sound design, environments, etc are all amazing but the one thing I was never in love with was the acting/delivery. Which I'm sure is probably where we differ. BUT with that said, I do think there are pockets of great and even amazing acting in the OG. For James I personally think Guy's performance peaks at the opening dialogue read. "I got a letter". It never reaches that high again. Maria/Mary's actor is good all around with the letter reads, beginning and end, being perfectly acted. For the remake, I like James acting/delivery, for Maria/Mary I'm sadly mixed, and she was the strongest acted character in the OG. In the trailer it's hard to really tell, but in context of the actual game, If you watch the actual game-play footage, you can hear her read the letter at the beginning. To me, this is one of the most iconic things in all of silent hill, and I don't think the new actress does it justice. Tonally like you said, she sounds more like Mary, but performance, timing, expression, emphasis wise, I don't think she pulls it off. It actually sounds like it's one of her first takes, almost like she didn't plan out any of her pauses or the beats that she would have to hit when reading the letter. It comes off more like she's rushing through the dialogue than feeling it. And for many people this isn't going to be a problem, hell, the actress could have sneezed into the microphone and people would be okay with it, but to me, when the original performance is perfect, having someone else do a half-ass to decent job will always stick out like a sore thumb. I know Troy Baker got a lot of Slack for the remaster performance, but I can't imagine anyone else pulling off Joel Miller from The Last of Us. Specifically his acting during the first death scene. He had to go and redo it, after who knows how many attempts, but eventually he pulled off a really masterful performance. To me that is the equivalent Mary reading the letter. Even a Hollywood actor couldn't even come close to Troy Baker's performance when making a live action version of The Last of Us. And that's the feeling I get here with the new actress. Some sort of cheap imitation. Her line reads just don't carry that the same weight. I'm also not a fan of the change in how they're portraying Maria as this over the top creepy woman, but I'll judge that when the full game comes out. Let's say the new actress actually pulls off every other scene and even reads the letter at the end of the game perfectly, the beginning would still be butchered. The beginning is one of the most important parts of any story, so messing up the initial letter read is very disappointing. Also, I agree with everything you said about the cell scene. Reversing the character portrayal is a super bizarre choice. There's other stuff to talk about, like the lighting, Etc, but I'll just leave it at that. Maybe the game will be good, but it always seems to be a give and take with these remakes. And it always seems like none of the most iconic parts of these games, are done nearly as well as the originals. Another example of this would be Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth fumbling the most iconic scene in the franchise, but I digress. Hopefully one day, a remake is going to be led by someone who actually loves the small micro details about a game and not just the macro. "Fog, Monsters, woman. Man. Radio. Pyramid on mans head. etc. That's silent Hill. Line delivery? What's that? Character portrayal, Huh?" As long as it gets the big picture correct, the details don't matter to the majority of people. Somehow, it actually seems like MGS3 DELTA is going to be one of the best remakes, keeping old line-delivery, giving the player the option to choose gameplay styles, and even use the OG color grading filters. I would have never guessed that in a million years, but that seems to be where we're heading.
Thanks for sharing that, that was very well said 👌 and yeah I think a lot of people assume picking up on the voice acting is over critical and we’re just overthinking it, trust me I’m really hoping it turns out great I’m not just trying to be controversial or anything I just love this game to death and I’m really hoping they don’t ruin one of the most important aspects of it which is the storytelling that’s all, I’d say everything else looks great ! But I get what you mean entirely we all love this game for many different reasons so to see certain aspects changed just throws us a bit sometimes, let’s just hope they can pull it off 👍 thanks for watching !
@@jb2einziger Exactly. Our criticisms don't come from a place of hate but a love for this game. I think what irks me the most is when people dismiss criticisms by saying that you're nitpicking. People in this very comment section even accuse you of doing the same thing. I'll just speak for myself, but for me, the devil is in the details. The details is what elevates a game from just being good, to being masterful. So when people say your nitpicking small things as if it doesn't matter, it's very annoying. Those things do matter. Those things are the reason why Silent Hill is firmly in my mind 20 years later. There's a lot of good movies. A lot of good games. But Those just kinda fade in the back of my mind, since usually only the overt macro things are good, while neglecting the details. In this case, for the cell scene, you mentioned that Maria is shifting between two personalities. I'm willing to bet 90% of the people who played Silent Hill 2, didn't even really stop, and really lock that fact into their brain. Yes they understood it was happening as they played, but I doubt if you asked most of these people, even ones who claim this is one of their favorite games to describe the scene, they probably won't mention that. Yet it is one of the most critical, and important aspects of this scene. It's literally why that scene even makes a lick of sense. Maria is acting like Mary, talking about things that only James and Mary should know, which is what prompts James to ask "But aren't you Maria?" he's confused, because she's acting like his wife, and even mentions memories that she shouldn't have. Having the dialog be nearly the same in the remake, despite reversing the portrayal order of Maria and Mary, very much misses the point of this scene. It's a detail that a lot of people probably don't even really remember, but it is so important in making the scene even work in the first place, yet for a lot of people, the overt part of the scene remains the same. 2 people. A cell. Similar dialogue. Therefore all nuance is thrown out the window. "It's the same, see" despite the details being all jumbled up. Can the remake still be good despite this. It can. Can it reach amazing levels? Well, maybe, but it's already starting on the back-foot, so that uphill battle is going to be harder to pull off. Hopefully they can do it. Maybe they got some surprises up their sleeves, who knows? We'll just have to wait and then judge for ourselves.
@@LETSpeakTRUTH extremely well said and well explained 👌 thank you for watching and for understanding where the criticism is coming from and not that I’m just “nitpicking” I want to see the game succeed very much ! But just certain things I see in major story moments like that, that seem to completely miss the point doesn’t give me hope, but we’ll have to just wait and see !
I’ll be playing and getting the remake and I’m really hoping I enjoy it, same way I was scared about the RE4 remake as that’s my favourite game ever and it ended up being better than I could’ve hoped for ! I’m not moaning just for the sake of it, it’s just an important game to me and certain things in this trailer threw me off a bit, but yeah like you say it’s made to be enjoyed and I’m sure tons and tons of people will love it still
I love playing games ever since I was born... but sadly never had a privilage to play, never had any console in my childhood and I only got to buy a PS5 now when I was well off... I know these kinda games growing up but never had the chance to play them... im happy to see Old classics being remade... but SAD to see people be disapppointed in something that isnt even finished yet... as a consumer I also want to know the say of the masses of this game is a buy or not... guessing by this video?... I guess not?... but in other videos I saw everybody be hyping the game..
Feel free to buy and try whatever game you want it’s all about having fun, I’m sure it’ll be a very great game, visually I’m sure it’s scary and got good atmosphere, my issue is just how it holds up against certain things I know about the original SH2 but if you don’t mind the differences then it’s not an issue id say give it a go for sure !
There're too many red flags all over this demake, especially the DEI firm and demaking it for modern audiences. The voice acting is so bad and most of the characters have been uglified for modern audiences. The third person camera makes it look generic and less scary than the original. Having that great music over this slob hurt my soul.
if you have paid attention to Bloober before you'd come to see that every game they have ever put out has had the same problems. Great-looking games, terrible writing/directing. It's clear to me that they don't incorporate criticism well.
I’ve played a couple Bloober titles but only the Blair Witch game and the Layers of Fear both again amazing looking games but I didn’t have much of an idea what was ever going on story wise, thanks for watching 👍
Everything about this remake screams disgusting generic westernization (aka bastardization) of something that was very much not western. And the worst part is...This was NOT bloober's masterpiece to burn, Silent Hill isn't theirs and in fact, it wasn't even Konami's ... that caliber of developer that took part in Team Silent has been gone from the gaming industry for a while now , its time to stop coping and accept that that level of Quality just may be a thing of the past.
They did good with Eddie (So many people are acting like any criticism is Toxic criticism~Praising everything can ALSO be Toxic) The way they have done the girls is AWFUL! The voice acting is so wrong! It's so stiff, lacks emotion, terrible delivery. I can't stand how they designed Maria & Angela. I wish they made it so Items weren't so easy to spot in the environment cause there's these big indicator pop ups. Areas should be darker, fog could obscure a lot more. Enemies & characters could convey a lot more uncanny uncomfortable weirdness. They shouldn't be afraid to convey uncomfortable sensitive topics. There's an artform to how you convey these kinds of things. I hope they understand how to do that. It's one of the most crucial aspects of doing a project such as this. I really do want to see this turn out great.
Yeah very well said 👌 anytime you do a new approach on something it’s always going to have its critics whether good or bad, I’m still going to buy it play it and most definitely review it, but it’s so hard to not compare it in some way or another. It means so much to both myself and others. I’m willing to give it a chance still and I really really hope I end up loving it ! Same with the RE4 remake I was so sceptical about that as it’s my favourite game and I was like it doesn’t need a remake at all, but I ended up really really loving the remake even with all its changes.
I dont understand these gamming community... I never had to play old classic games... and my first console was literally a PS5... and I wanted to see the comments if they would recommend this game to me... and then you see these type of comments its really heartbreaking... this is why games take took look long to make... because everbody just be disappointed about everything...
Let’s please be kind to each other in these comments and stop assuming I’m just complaining for the sake of it, it’s just how I initially reacted to the video but trust me I’m still going to buy the game and play the hell out of it I’m sure, so there’s no need to worry if I don’t like it, I don’t like it, and if I do, that’s an added bonus 😊 I’m sure we’ll all enjoy the game, but I thought I’d give some further context about the above, I can even link the clips of people complaining about this back when the HD collection when it first came out, please watch this clip from 23:53 until 26:46

Holy shit why don't we just burn blooper because of nitpicks at this point
Why are you so mad about other people's opinions?
@@LIQUIDSNAKEz28 Opinions are a two-way street, dude.
@@Nazareeni That's actually MY point.
I've never played, but I can't wait for the game, man
They absolutely *RUlNED* Maria. I know modders will fix her f4ce and outfit, but that souless, monotone line delivery is just *H0RRlBLE.* 🤮
Everything else looks fine.
“I here for you James”
Monotone. Now this brain rot
The jail sceane needs improvemnt from lighting and shadow to voice acting
@@weepo2651 Couldn't have said it better, myself.
@@weepo2651 yeah so, basically david lynch movies are shit now ? brother please..
Why worry if you still have your perfect original SH2?
Good point 😂 but yeah willing to still give this a good shot, certain things are just throwing me about it with each new trailer 🤣
Such a cheap way to dismiss any potential criticism
because this pile of shit will overshadow the original game
I completely agree with all the complaints and good finds.
I will add:
1) in the original in the scene with Maria/Mary the lamp illuminates Maria's face from above, and hard contrasting shadows fall on her eyes, hiding her eyes, this adds complexity to James's understanding of her true intentions, and the facial manual animation creates all of Maria's internal text, but we read all of this only by body language and facial expressions, not by the eyes.
The remake looks good. Y'all are just miserable
Spoken like a true consoomer
This game looks very unsettling and the fog looks great. Characters feel off I agree
As long as THE MODERN AUDIENCES dont see the original it is not a problem i guess
The maria in prison scene is the most iconic scene of the game and omg what the hell is this? She sits like a robot talking like she is here only to do her job as voice actor
stop complaining just because it didn't meet ur stupid expectations
None of this breaks it for me. It's a different style, but I think it's fine.
That’s cool then I’m still buying it and am looking forward to it I think the gameplay overview looks great ! Just a couple scenes here threw me a bit when I first saw them but like you say it’s nothing major
I’ll prob like some stuff in the game and feel let down by others (same with RE2 remake which while over all good coulda had everything from the original so it was a missed opportunity)
But I have the original game, my ps2 and a CRT tv so I can play it properly still until one of those breaks but hopefully I’ll be able to find a replacement.
@@jb2einziger exactly. In other games, these changes are whatever, but here it's integral to the story and characters.
I think Promise significantly changes the vibe of the characters in the story trailer. If you’re interested, check out the trailer I’ve uploaded. I replaced Promise with Silent Heaven by Yamaoka and the atmosphere and depth of the characters is completely different imo & it really builds the tension
I’ll have to check that out thanks 🙏
I’m still buying and playing this game and am excited about it as I say in the video but certain things are putting me off about it, I wouldn’t want it to be identical but like the MGS Delta remake of 3 they’re taking into consideration the core fanbase by including the original voices and a game style called legacy mode which means you can even play it in the old perspective or the new for newcomers, I’m all up for games getting an upgrade graphically and gameplay wise, but it’s valid to be concerned when so much of a focus is on the storytelling and acting in this game, I’m not being out of order towards the game just for the sake of it, im a fan, im allowed to be concerned about an IP that means a lot to me
It's only insufferable if you insist on reading and watching it. 😉
That’s how fat people look like in real life. Now like plastic toys like the og
It’s feeling more like a better executed Patrick Napier from downpour
They just dont understand when she is marry and ehen she is maria
Yeah totally agree 👍
Unbearable video to watch, elitism at its finest
Yeah the remake trailer is unwatchable totally agree

The modern audiences are all out in full force I see. Such consoomers.
Imagine never growing past 12 years mentally
There's no such thing as modern audiences. You guys are just nitpicking like crazy. 5 minutes ago everyone was shitting on it. It's looking good now, you're in the minority. If you guys want everything EXACTLY the same as the original, play the original!!!
98 OG Silent Hill fan vet here: I didn't watch the video, but whatever you said is wrong.
What are you smoking? The trailer was great.
You guys complain about everything instead of fkin enjoying it, and yes I played the original lots of times, yall trippin
Angela has certainly never been a model
@@anthonyf616 No, but Maria certianly was and she didn't sound like a monotone robot either. 😉
@anthonyfernandez82 Where did I say she was?
if you have paid attention to Bloober before you'd come to see that every game they have ever put out has had the same problems.
I do have a full in depth review available on this channel now if you’d be interested to know my thoughts on it further ?
