  • Not my usual material, but worth more than a mention in Blackpool history. A Blackpool landmark for over 40 years, a massive building housing one of the true NORTHERN SOUL venues THE HIGHLAND ROOM. SHAME ON YOU!!! Blackpool council, The Mecca didn't stand a chance
    in your RE-generation plans.

Happiest Northern Soul nights of my life.. travelled from Manchester every other weekend in 71 /72. Brilliant music given to os by Ian Levine, Tony Jeb and Colin Curtis.. great days KTF

Never been one to claim, that I was there with the other six million people 😁.At the last night of the Casino.I was just too young.Same with the Mecca.
Funny tho images like this and of other old venues being dismantled.Bring tears to my eyes.
    Why.......Coz I'm a Northern soul fan and it's a special,special thing.Weve been blessed,brothers and sisters.Truly blessed!

Couldn't have picked a better tune to represent the Highland Room - it was truly heaven on earth. I loved the Casino as well but this is where most of the anthems were first heard in a very intimate environment. Great nites, great times.

My dad worked for Laing Construction and he was project manager during the construction of the ballroom. Mum, dad, my sister and I all lived on-site in a caravan for around the eighteen months it took to build. I was around six years old at the time.

Sad to see for many people, me included. I met my wife to be there, both of us teenagers on holiday, a long time ago. Our daughters are now both grown up and our eldest daughter is getting married in a couple of months. So yes its sad to see, but happy memories too and obviously I owe my wife and family to this place. It was Tiffanys then, escalator took you upstairs, complete with palm trees, and apart from the main dance floor area there was a room away to the left I think. Was only there once so the memory is a bit hazy.

Great tune. To see pictures of any venue demolished is sad enough, to see it in action is heartbreaking.

Great days; remember coach trips to Blackpool for the day, changing in the train station ready for the night out in the Mecca, then leaving for the all nighter at the Casino.

Aww this is so so sad! My garndparents, parents and myself and brother all used this building! The thing that kept people together whether it was Northern Soul or House and hip hop music was the music. Just fortunate I was the last generation to use the building! Its true memories never die ;o)

Aaah ...banging the machines in the Matador amusements when I was 12, ten pin bowling if you were good on Sundays. At 14 watching girls dance around their handbags to Heard it Thru the Grapevine on Saturday Morning teenage discos.
Saw Martha Reeves and the Vandellas play an awe inspiring acapella gig cos their band missed the plane. Met Linda with the haunting blue eyes....nuff said. Goodbye Mecca I'll miss ya

A sad event: but the spirit of this venue and its movement still lives on : just catch one of Colin Curtis's current DJ spots now to realise what Northern Soul was all about !! Still the other Mecca at Whitworth Street Manchester stands proud . The old Ritz is all that remains of the Mecca Northern movement : although saying that is Notts Palais still standing ?

Knock down our venues, and it does hurt, I went to Blackpool Mecca 1976, Wigan 1981 and Winter Gardens Cleethorpes 1976, but your Northern Soul kids travel...so here's to a new venue, we built it, we can build it again!
