- We all have things we like and dislike about our own countries. In this video, I went to find out what Thai people most like and most dislike about their own country. Both the fun and more serious issues.

it is funny because it is a relatable and very true, and most of the Thais want that.

The fact that all of them hesitated and said “can I say it on camera?” when asked about what they don’t like about Thailand shows what kind of country we are living in. They don’t feel safe expressing their true thought even on Australian soil. Sad. 😞
Yeah, that tells a lot about the current situation.
I disagree, its not about political censorship or Lèse majesté, but more that the Thai will often not comment about internal Thai issues (especially to foreigners) as their culture, and its inherent system of respect hinders making a comment on any matter or person that could cause another potential embarrassment. Thai internal matters are for Thai only.
@@omegaman477 You wrong, I'm Thai ppl and what about the top commend said it's true. It's not about culture or system of respect hinders It about they don’t feel safe expressing their true. Some people who living abroad but their parents still living in Thailand that's why they worries about their speech because they fear their families will be intimidate or hurting. I wonder why u disagree to The top commend when u not even living in Thailand in addition to the top commend is also Thai ppl, I knew by his name. If u don't trust me u can ask this to some other Thai ppl, their answer will be the same as mine.

fascinating. The Thai people definitely deserve a better government. It's interesting that even though they're not in Thailand they are so careful about what they feel they can say.
From comments and media that I've seen, (don't know how true this is, but it makes sense as to why they're so careful) is that the Thai government might target your family in Thailand if you criticise the country/leadership, even from another country

One thing I respect Thai that most of the people really care and take care of their parents.
You're kidding aren't you? Most of them send money back to their parents in the village because they ask for it. What kind of parent would you be to ask your son or daughter to send you money? They're trying to save for their own future in an even more competitive world ffs. There's no way in 1 million years I would EVER ask my kids to send me money.

As an Aussie who has lived in Thailand I seriously love Thailand’s midday to Midnight lifestyle, it’s just suits me better as I’m not a morning person, I like how you can go to the bank at 7pm in a shopping mall, or eat fresh street food in a busy environment at midnight, Australia is boring in that respect
Totally agree with this. I've been living in Bangkok for the last two years and it's been amazing. Another great thing is the consistency of the weather, it's been in the 30s for months on end unlike Melbourne where I'm from which can never make up its mind.

I spoke to a Thai man once in America who came back from Thailand and said he was so relieved to be back because he felt like he could breath and speak his mind and not wander around like everyone else with blinders on.

I've been living in Thailand for 5 years now and this was really interesting to hear Thai people's honest thoughts about their home country, great work Paddy
I like how straightforward the guy at 5 min is. This is not so common for thais. Well done.
I like that guy. He has learned to think critically. But... if he were so outspoken in his home country, the current government would declare him a "national security risk", no doubt.
Thais aren't normally big travellers. This gentleman has seen a new culture, different attitudes (good and bad) and opens up and says what he thinks. Back home he might have to be very careful. I met a Thai fellow a few years ago in Yasothon, very similar to this man, who had travelled around the world, top bloke, he hated fellow Thais using the word 'farang'. I have a love/hate thing with the word myself. If people don't know my name and call me a farang it's not the worst thing but when people do know my name and call me 'farang' in front of their Thai friends it is just about the worst thing and I have to walk away.
@@thaitom6410 I like him also, he is courageous and thinks for himself. He seems to have no plans to return to Thailand though witch might make him feel a bit more relaxed about it.
@@terrythekittieful I agree with what you said about the word Farang. Maybe this would be a great topic for a Paddy video, how do thais use the word FARANG and what sentiments does it include? Is it a derogatory word or not? Personally I have a feeling that sometimes its just a innocent description for a foreigner but that other times its used with a negative hint.
@@JG-ke7gj I have seen the subject of the word 'farang' brought up on a YT video before, not sure if it was one of Paddy's. I have walked by shops in various parts of Isaan and heard people say in Thai something like 'There's a foreigner (farang)',...no problem at all. A couple of years ago when I was living in Korat I used to frequent a typical rustic bamboo, tin, wood and whatever material you can put together cafe/restaurant/diner, nothing fancy but it had character, loved the look of the joint and it was close to the school where I taught.
Anyhow, got to know the staff, the lady who ran the joint, the assistants and the male cook all by their names and they knew my name or just called me 'teacher'. Was a regular customer, bought them drinks, tipped regularly but after 10-12 weeks heard the cook talk to some other Thai customers 'here comes the farang', ignored that frist time, bought a meal and beer, but it just went on for a few times more and I had had enough, I turned around and walked out when I heard 'here comes the farang' one too many times. I'm white, and yes, I will never have to put up with the kind of racism other races have to put up with but it doesn't mean I have to laugh off someone who calls me a 'farang' when they know my name.
Only one problem, the video is too short haha. Great vid Paddy, you left me wanting to hear more. Part 2?

That was a really great video with not only answers that I was expecting but also on a whole range of things that maybe I hadn't stopped to consider in my 37 plus years love affair with Thailand.
I am an Aussie who lives in Thailand and loves visiting Australia (can't wait till that can happen again) but even on visits back home I can't wait to get back HOME to Thailand.
Of course though my situation is pretty much the reverse in many ways of a Thai in Australia......I bet so many are hurting to come back to Thailand for a visit, but just like me, they will want to get back to their adopted country.
I love both countries.
Thank you to the interviewees for being frank and honest.
Amazing blitz interviews of Thai people. You could get more truth adn value from your 6 minute video then 600 minutes of mainstream media reporting. Good job! Thai people are amazing hard working people! Respectful and generous! I have at most respect for Thai people.

I enjoyed the candid responses from the interviewees and totally understand their perspectives.
As someone who has only spent 2 to 3 weeks in thailand each year its impossible to speak to any of the systematic issues that all countries deal with but my favourite things are the people, the food, the beaches and mountains and what I dislike the most is the horrific heat and humidity and not being able to speak Thai

This video really show the truth about Thailand even though these Thai are living far away from their country, but you can tell that they're still afraid to talk frankly and freely with the exception of one guy and yet he still choose his words carefully.
I bet you if you did this interview in Thailand and uploaded it, the very first thing you will hear in the morning are helicopters surrounding your house and police barging in to arrest you.

Nope, the truth is they use local police like ten officers to surround your house just to arrest a few civilians, and then they'll take pictures as evidence for their commanders.
(Fun fact: Thai police didn't use helicopters to catch criminals. They only use helicopters for airshow and for high rank people)

You could really tell with the guy in the black t-shirt, he was really trying to bite his tongue! That’s the sad thing about Thailand, they aren’t allowed to speak up and have an opinion. Aside to that I love everything about Thailand. The people are lovely and really friendly, the food is awesome and the culture is amazing. Of course the weather does it for me too! I’m born and raised in England and still live here and the main thing I really can’t stand about England is the dreadful weather, I don’t think I’ll ever get used to it!
The guy who spoke against the military government said what everyone else was afraid to, and even he held back.

Hello there, i am from the Philippines, what I like about my country is the people, because as you know, Filipinos are jolly, generous and hospitable, what I don't like, however are the corrupt politicians who suck the life out of our country.
In SEA, Corruption seems to be normal , but sadly it is not normal.

And to answer your question: in my country Finland what I love the most is Finns honesty and good social security and equality, dislike the most is darkness and weather during wintertime.

These are all accurate even from a foreigners perspective looking in (with the exception of governmental issues. I have no rights to speak on that) but every other issue is head on as I have those same issues today.

As a thai citizen, yes yes yes! The black t shirt guy is right. Thai problem is that the olders never listen to youngers and if you speak up about politics you might face troubles e.g. police threatens by coming to your place to ask your family for your info @ night or in worst case, you might end up in jail

Life here in Thailand is much more easy and flexible in some stuff. Example, internet. Here is way faster than Philippines😅another, if I want to transfer money to someone here around Thailand, you can just send it through an app without any charge. In Phil. You need to go to the bank or nearest ATM machine and checking your own balance will cost you around 15baht I guess.

One thing. If you say that Thai people have low incomes It might not be fair. You have to look at the cost of living. For example, if you have monthly income of 30,000 baht in Thailand. You will have a better life, happier than people in Europe with a monthly income of 60,000 baht. Because fried rice in Thailand costs 50 baht per dish, while fried rice in Europe is 10 euros 340 baht (7 times). Importantly, the quality of food is the same, right?
If I had shown my parents this video, they would be inclined to agree. Thailand is falling apart, and my father has spoken to me a number of times about countries to move to if Thailand is no longer a safe place for our family. This video basically takes the word out of our mouths, even though some of the older generations (I say some, not all) can't afford to go anywhere else, so they choose to grin and bear it.
