Apart from great techniques, the best part is this dude respects everybody's time and doesn't waste anytime on irrelevant commentary (and techniques). Respect!
Great content . I always admire the discipline of the assistant. They often take sharp smacks and yet they continue to offer great examples of worthy offense against what we are presented to learn. Good stuff.
Mark, your videos are absolutely brilliant, so clear on what is required but you're so brilliant because you have had decades of practice. If the 'normal' guy in the street gets into confrontation/attacked by some a*shole, panic sets in and likely forgets all the information he has collated watching your videos. I think the only way you can carry this off is with regular training and sparring. keep them coming tho, I love them.
So brilliant that he's teaching principles rather than exact sequences of movement for defense and attack. Also, this principle of attacking from the position of where the weapon is, rather than repositioning to a prescribed stance or retracting the chosen weapon to gain, presumably, a more powerful blow, is a principle extolled by the venerated master Bruce Lee. And yes, he has a magnificent smile.
I always love watching the other guy kindly stand as an example. He always cracks a little smile and you just know he could cause a bad day. Love these so much.
Great video Sifu! Thank you very much for this video... this is VERY important for Self Defense - I've learnt this form you a long time ago. Oss 👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼
I truly enjoy watching your videos many times I rewatch to completely understand. Thank you again for all the new and great information. I hope you keep these videos going I really enjoy them and try to learn from them . Thank you again!!!!!!’
Just a suggestion: No time to block multiple times. Block and counter better be instant or counter instead of block the 1st time. There is rarely a 2nd chance. Train for 1 chance or run. Tanx for sharing and 2 thumbs up.
Actually its the first time that I see someone that actually train Wing Chun that talks about short distance. Many people don't realise Wing Chun is a short range combat style (With the exception of Quan).
Can you please make some videos for ways or methods in trying to control fear and the best way to keep your mind clear enough to make good decisions in self defense situations
Excellent, l used to hit my heavy bag at the perfect distance where l have never been in a real tussle, l learned to move inside and l like it and now, l get close to the bag and hit from uncomfortable range, in a little time you get better. If it becomes instinct you are there, l need more time for that. Thanks Guru, your a bad man.
0:10 as a jkd/mma person I try to mention this type of thing, attacking as defense, non-telegraph, being able to strike and kick from standing as well as in a stance. Certain youtubers instead of trying to be helpful, literally just repeatedly name call us "jkd people" in the comments. Admittedly without having read Bruce's writings or understanding what they are actually all about. How is it smart to completely dismiss something, while admitting you know nothing about it?
I would really like to see them in headgear body gear and a Spar session to see how this actually unfolds in that situation I'm not saying it doesn't work but there's more than one punch being thrown I'd like to see how it pans out in a situation of sparring no disrespect sorry if I came off that way it's just part of learning in my opinion thank you
Great video Dr Mark. Quick question: when throwing punches at a short distance, esp using the vertical fist, how do you stop the energy returning back to you when striking. Do you turn your fists? Keep up the good work!
You can whip from your waist, and also use bodyweight momentum by taking small steps and land the strike right before landing the step the transfer the kinetic energy. Also you can use the fast short strike as a "stun" hit (open palm with fingers slapping eyes and palm hitting cheekbone. Meanwhile (because first strike in the "vision") the other arm is primed to load a harder strike that is still not over comminning to your balance...(preferably with a slight step and land its energy by hitting in solar plexus, but it all depends on position and context what you get...it's still a concept and not a specific technique). In an already ongoing early contact, you might want to overwhelm by striking with fast hits with no overcommitting to energy and balance asking asyou are free in motion. When (not so much if, because they will try to resist your action ) the aggressor holds onto you, your strikes will cost more energy to you even if not committed, preserve energy then by controlling position, and find free path to "close weapons" strikes. If you get stuck into the opponent in grabsetc make sure to have bent knees, it is important so you can keep in balance to be able to get away/strike back and not fall onto the ground... Wrestling asself defence is a no-no because you rarely can fend multiple aggressors lying down.
what's the best way to develop speed and power with the elbows? (I know, train, train, train) ayn good tips for elbow strikes? I find it hard to generate enough speed, my elbows do not go as fast as my hands!
Do you have videos on using your environment for a weapon? Such as picking up a stick or rock to defend yourself? Maybe throwing someone at a tree or down some stairs to defend yourself?
Doc is dropping mad knowledge, Yo 🤓. I would like to hear more about chi. Being able to control chi when strinking makes the difference between one strike finish or a slapping contest. Question: What's the difference between a Martial Artist and an mma fighter?
Martial arts is about learning about war, to find inner peace. You learn self defense as you learn more about battle fields, and apply that knowledge in every aspect of your life. You learn to be kind, because you understand that war brings pain to so many lives. A MMA fighter is just a figher who wants to be in a cage to be the "best" and "prove their point" (ego).
Your opponent can't defend what he can't see. This is where the element of surprise comes in. If your close, then 9 times out of 10 there are angles or extremities that are outside the opponents perifial view. It is at that point that you can act. The same goes for defender. Knowing this can maximize your chance of survival.
Doesn't more time in a fight also mean that there is more time for you to get hit, so you should want to end it as quickly as possible? More time does not always mean more safety.
Im lucky because I'm big and also not looking for trouble, i havent had to fight anyone in 10 years (Im 35 now) but if anyone ever wants to get froggy I take a right handed stance and look for a right hand strike ( 9/10 thats whats coming in a street fight) attack their right hook while moving in, right hand back chop the neck while moving in with right foot behind their left leg and then use both hands to push them down over my leg. At that point I'd prefer to walk away (facing them) but if they get up and charge me I throw a straight side kick into their solar plexus. Best thing to do is to just walk away, the older you get, the more you have to lose by fighting. And honestly the older you get the less people want to fight anyways. Be mature and dont catch a case by whoopin someone's ass because the cops WILL still arrest you self defense or not.
One opinion : Relax and sink; elbows connected to the ground connected through legs and hips. Sifu has many great examples of elbow techniques . Anyway, any other strategy, tactics that you have seen from other of these ? I find these very useful. Thank you.
Not a fake smile ,a predator showing teeth, it scream "i could fucking eat you alive ... i choose to be civilize but ,please give me a reason to unleash 😈..."
Your self-defense advice always involves getting close up-front with the attacker and staying there. If you're a talented fighter living in an unrealistic world - only then might that be a good idea. But for the rest of us on planet Earth - take up a SAFE position (as in BEHIND) and get this over with pronto. Self-defense begins with a mindset: - I'm not Bruce Lee and that other guy could get lucky.
Thats all great but how do i defend my self when my WIFE is kicking my ass n i cant strike because shes a woman . Go ahead explain running out the door as she chases me. Lmao
Apart from great techniques, the best part is this dude respects everybody's time and doesn't waste anytime on irrelevant commentary (and techniques). Respect!
Who else loves that smile he does after every video because it always brings me joy
There's just something genuinely enjoyable about his personality!
Well it doesn't feel like a smile to me ,it's more like a evil predator thing to me, i got to admit i love it too 🤣
lol You should see him in person...
He’s smiling bc he just beat up the other guy & got away with it lol
Fr it makes it seem like he's doing it from the heart and really wants to help people it just brings a more positive energy watching his video
Great content . I always admire the discipline of the assistant. They often take sharp smacks and yet they continue to offer great examples of worthy offense against what we are presented to learn. Good stuff.
That's Nick! Nick's greatest asset is his cool head, his greatest weapon is that grin.
My hat goes off to Nick every time I watch these videos.
He gets dinged every so often, but he's always a good sport.
Best realistic no BS self defence on YT! Thank you for sharing.

Excellent video as always with clear, helpful advice.
Closest weapon to closest target makes so much sense 👍🏽
Thanks for sharing Sifu 🙏🏽

One of the best practical defense concepts ever!
Expertly Demonstrated, sir.

This channel and Aidikoflow are the best one....
Being a model for his demonstrations legit seems so relaxing.

Love it for second best. In a perfect world every punch or elbow should be going for the Knockout.
I love the practical information Dr. Phillips presents and the way he presents it . Very knowledgeable and efficient . Thank You Sir 👍

I like the sneaky arm wrap to opposite wrist grab.. could go to arm bar quite nicely..
Love to get half a dozen lessons from this guy
Excellent technician excellent instructor.

“Fluidity is the mantra... proximity for strikes at will clearly speaks to the aforementioned as demonstrated here so effectively and efficiently...”
Awesome.thankyou for sharing.
Very good. In Kenpo, we call this economy of motion and striking from point of origin.
Great video! He does that smile in his videos, to show you that you'll keep your teeth, if you follow his instructions! 😂 I love that guy! 😂
This guy is amazing to watch.

th-cam.com/video/imS11JkoQXg/w-d-xo.html This ends with a quick rock grab to hold off a mob of teenagers.
All great points.
Ok I have to ask. How do get such good information in so little time in a video? Thanks for making them.

Awesome
Also a Left Shoulder strike would work nice in that first part if you get in good position to thrust upward
Hadn't ever thought of using the shoulder until Conor vs Cowboy 🤔
Dr. Beatdown!
Good Afternoon Sensei. In situations like these, are you prone to use palm strikes instead of closed fists? Thank you...
If it helps, I use mostly palm strikes in the clinch zone.
Awesome!
This looks just like karate kata tekki shodan in specific!. Wow.
Great video
Love the Batman sound effects! Great vid dudes :)
As a practitioner of multiple fighting styles, does Dr. Mark ever run into conflicting techniques between different disciplines?
Hey Sifu. How's the lockdown for you Englishmen? Has it been lifted? Is your school up? Great video as usual.
Sifu, did you learn this closest hitting with closest weapon principle from che sao, sil lim tao and chasing the centerline and hand replacement ?
Great work guys 💯💙✌🏻
When I use my upper body for defense and in close concentrating I am always worried about a quick sharp attack to my bollocks what do you suggest.
Time gives you options.
I could get confused...Bang!
Interesting that different arts have the same theories/insights. I observed this same concept while studying kajukenbo/FMA. Same principle/concept.
Great Sifu! Btw, although I am planning to go to a near wing chun school, how can I train wing chun by myself and without a wing chun dummy?
Nice lesson sifu
Liked the video
Thank you.
The concept-term you are looking for is “short-power” vs “long (range)-power? Ging in Chinese?
How about a Thai clinch? Control and strikes at the same time.

Yes just do whatever is easy, fast and reflex

Punches to the face/head lead to broken hand digits in several of the few fights I have witnessed, including the thumb that was broken on my face.
1:46 ,Why you bully him like that?😂
Electric!!
You seem very smart.
Mark could you please do a analysis of what could’ve happened in the abduction video of the girl
What if’ he’s bigger and destabilises you off your feet by clinching you .
One opinion :
Relax and sink; elbows connected to the ground connected through legs and hips.

Thank you.
What should you do when the attacker flops on the ground and starts crying?
Your nearest weapon should be a tissue
Hello how ya day going
👍
You should open a school here in the Philippines
Shadow boxing helps
I always find his grin at the end a bit disturbing
Especially if you are dealing with someone on drugs you got to deal with that quick time or he's gonna have you for lunch.
It’s a Taiji principle

Would definitely not like to get into a brawl with this guy....!
i see
I would never trust being near him because although he gives me that fake smile. I always sense he would hit me full force " on accident"
Paranoid^

You can turn quickly with the right arm locked into the opponent's elbow, then up thrust quickly, snapping the opponent's elbow..
You do not know real life fights
Grab those balls!!!🤣😂
