  • Probably the most important video I’ve made. Hearing damage is a serious issue for drummers, one that I’ve personally suffered from. As musicians and people in general, our hearing is a crucial part of our lives, we need to make sure to protect it. Hearing protection for drummers is a must!

I got tinnitus 9 months ago, first was only in my left ear, high pitched sound that doesn't go away, I've been playing drums for over 20 years and I've always wore protection, ear plugs + the Vic Firth drummer headphones, but I still have mild hearing loss, unfortunately it's getting worse, now it's in both ears and it is very disturbing, I can't play drums anymore, because even with ear plugs and headphones, the loud noise still triggers it a lot

I've been using cotton balls since I was 15. Only time my ears ring is if they fall out. Protect y'all selves

I have a perforated eardrum (hole in my eardrum, haha drum) but it was extremely painful and very bad for my drumming career, I couldn’t play real drums for over a months time and had to rest in bed for ages. Moral of the story, don’t have your headphones blasting your ears, wear ear protection and play drums right!

i got one of the custom made ones and they are really good! i think drummers should buy some even though it's really expensive.. it's a good investment:)

I've been drumming for over 7 years, and I got an electronic drum kit for christmas last year! So when I got behind my acoustic kit, and it hurt like a bitch. From then on I decided to start wearing earplugs + isolating headphones / IEMs. Best decision of my life!

Damn dude! Firstly please get yourself off to a hearing doctor / specialist. I have weird shaped ear canals so will have to get some custom inears made at some point, but it's not too much of an issue because i've never really been able to play my acoustic kit without vic firth mute pads... which kinda suck to play on, no gonna lie! But they are very quiet just kill your technique. I hope you find as solution as i feel like you're still at the beginning of your journey.

Ive used mainly earplugs or normal earphones (With music on loud) and my ears are fine! however, a game changer was when i bought a pair of inexpensive in ear monitors, they remove the ringing from the hihats and all cymbals while still keeping the sound clean and nice ( not muffled as they get with earplugs) For me, this is wonderful and i can still hear people talk to me in the room while my ear monitors are on! I have a pair of Sennheiser IE 100 Pro . Deffo not the best out there but i didnt believe in them so i didnt wanna spend to much!

Other cheap options are "high fidelity earplugs" which I wear at concerts and practices, and super cheap $20 in-ears under $10 hearing protection muffs which I wear when practicing w music (mixed with an overhead mic)

Hey Atom - I watched your video and had a few thoughts that may help you. First of all, I'm there with you - dealing with tinnitus is awful. I have tried every isolation can I could get my hands on and none perfectly solve the problem. One thing that may be hurting you is that you're in a small room, and no matter how much you muffle your drums, there are going to be certain low frequencies that are boosted by that fact. (I am going to mess up the terminology...boundary reinforcement maybe?) I am a worship drummer in a cage and deal with it also. It bleeds through your headphones and drives me crazy. But, you can get foam pieces off Amazon that are angular and designed to go in corners to break up those waves which will hopefully help you. If you're in a situation like that, your isolation VF headphones also act as a small resonance chamber (or whatever it's called) somehow. Once you leave the room and play in a larger area, that effect goes away. Hope you get some relief fella.
